I am a volunteer fire fighter in the US, hoses aren't hard to connect and typically are already connected. Hose lines are easy to work with fire fighters are trained on how to properly care pack and use the hoses. While I have witness and heard of incompetence fire fighter or errors typically it was corrected immediately and had little effect on response. One example was a multiple alarm fire where we had multiple departments responding. One such department chauffer had forgotten how to use the pump panel on the engine luckily my department jumped in and was able to charge the hose line and operate the panel, that chauffer was suspended and required to retake the pump class in order to be allowed to drive again not sure what happened after that.
Even though we are volunteers we go through training academy tested and practice our skills every Monday night, however sometimes we do it a few times a week. We are always learning something new. A lot of us also come form long lines of family linage of fire fighters which form a young age many of us are highly motivated.

In this one apartment fire, where the hoses couldn't be connected to the apartment build in water tube, it looked like the hoses from the fire department had DIN (German industrial norm) clutches/connectors while the build in tube had something why different.
In other videos the hoses looked like US hoses with US standard clutches/connectors.

that's because of trucks are larger and generally all have preconnected 1.5-1.75 inch sidelays. Smaller trucks from europe and asia don't have them preconnected. You might have 150-250 feet already connected but a firefighter from somewhere else may need to connect how many hose segments? That is inherently less reliable and leads to clips as we saw, however, how many other incidents have occurred when they operated smoothly? Being shown a bad clip of a crew shouldn't correlate into all of china's firefighters are bad.
It's rather easy to see how there's bad firefighters here. People that are way to old and overweight. The fire chiefs and battalion chiefs not liking each other. Old guys who don't care to really train and thus make it hard for the newer guys to hone their skills. The lack of fires volunteers get doesn't help them get real world experience and most calls are automated alarms anyways. Let's not act as though we're radically different

The concept is that the launcher has to be aimed properly, but also the suppressant has to be placed in a crumple type cannister or glass bottle that will shatter and release on impact. It's unlikely to reach 200m height without aid as the rockets have to be cheaply made (sic). If they had rocket/fuel cannisters, they would be stripped for parts or sold off, or the fuel would be missing on arrival at a fire site. Which would be 'embarassing' when the missile basically launches and hits the carpark or another fuel truck nearby.
The more likely use, is in a forest fire or wildfire where accuracy isn't so important, what's needed is a fire-break or hazard/fuel reduction i.e. setting a secondary fire and clearing out a trail / air-gap so that the fire can't spread as quickly. Especially around valleys and areas where leaves and trees accumulate for decades, leading to large areas that can combust or accelerate a wildfire.
I don't imagine China has the concept of Fire-breaks or hazard reduction, i.e. setting small fires to reduce leaves/branches because their rural areas are mostly farmland and mountains.

Just a comment on the fire hydrant at the 5:37 mark. The lack of water is functionally correct.
Hydrants are a tall pipe with sealed openings at the top and a valve at the bottom. The nut on top is used to open the bottom valve and let the water flow up the pipe. The usual process to use a hydrant is to remove one of the seals, attach a water hose to the uncovered opening and then open the valve to let the water flow up the pipe and into your hose.
Some areas leave the valve open at all times so that the hydrant is always full of water and under pressure. If your car hits one of these, you'll see a lovely fountain.
In areas where the temperature goes sub zero (many regions in China) it makes sense to leave the hydrant empty to prevent ice forming. Water expands when turning from liquid to solid, so a closed, water filled hydrant would burst during Winter, and create a massive leak during the Spring thaw. If the hydrant has been left with a closed valve, then hitting with your car should see no loss of water - just like the scene in your video.

Firefighter and Paramedic from Germany here:
The infrastructural deficiencies identified in this video are due to controllers and people who are unaware of the danger or do not care.
As far as the fire service's firefighting work and tactical operational management are concerned, I can only say that many of the things the fire service does do not always immediately make sense to the population or look good. For example, if a person is trapped in a room or on a roof that is already ablaze with flames, the fire service must carefully weigh up the risks of this rescue operation. Firefighters never enter a fire alone and if in doubt, both firefighters die in the fire trying to get someone out of the fire who is already dead anyway.
To the population it sometimes looks slow, but we as emergency services have to first get a thorough picture of the situation on site, we have to discuss our tactics and then proceed, constantly considering our own safety, these are things that take time on site and videos like these on social media in which firefighters take part in competitions fuel a very unrealistic image in society.

In fairness I believe most water hoses in high rises are not hooked to the municipal water, but are intended to be fed by a connection from a fire truck outside via a stand pipe, and so there will be no water if the fire department isn’t there. That said, I don’t doubt they’re probably still not set up right.

    • @ORANDOMM
      @ORANDOMM Před 7 dny

No. That's wrong. Fire trucks don't have enough water or power to do that. The RED fire extinguisher pipes in buildings ARE connected and to mains water but at a higher flow rate, in the basement or just outside of all buildings you will see a giant box with words like "fire pump" written on them. Those are massive water pumps that beef up the water pressure to those pipes that go all the way up so there is enough pressure to make them work correctly.
Fire trucks don't pump water into buildings pipes, they use water from existing pumps, connections or hydrants to get water.
In some crappy 3rd world countries I believe the fire truck can indeed be used as a water pump in some scenarios, not normal for cities though.

I worked on a water-related project with a Chinese company as a translator and the water hose leading to nowhere was and is a thing. That water treatment plant was a nightmare in the making and that was before it went operational. And this year, shit went south and now it's my colleague who took over from me who had sleepless nights for weeks handling this. Felt sorry for the guy.

Not being hooked up to anything at all is not good of course, but fire hydrants in buildings often dont work on their own by design. They are just connected to pipework from the ground floor up, but not connected to the water mains. They have a connector on the outside on ground level to be hooked up to a fire truck which provides the necessary pressure which is significantly higher than the one coming from the water mains.
