FILM DESCRIPTION:
Terence Young directed this first of a long line of screen adventures with Ian Fleming's unflappable British Secret Service Agent 007 in a fast-paced, tongue-in-cheek style that set the tone for the rest of the popular series. Sean Connery sets the standard by which all future takers must measure themselves as the insouciant and devil-may-care James Bond. The story concerns Bond being sent to Jamaica to investigate the murders of a British agent and his secretary. During his investigation, he comes into contact with the evil and unscrupulous Chinese scientist Dr. No (Joseph Wiseman) who, living on an island called Crab Key, is hard at work in a nuclear laboratory. Dr. No's scheme is to divert rockets being fired from Cape Canaveral off their charted course and to blackmail the United States to get their rocket launches restored to normal. Helping Bond is Ursula Andress (mostly undressed in a bikini throughout most of the film), as well as bad gals like Zena Marshall, who almost leads Bond to his death in her bedroom, and Eunice Gayson, a Bond pickup in a London gambling house who proves herself a greater adversary than even James Bond can handle.

It’s amazing how iconic and memorable Dr No is despite the fact that he has 10 minutes of screen time and shows up at the very end of the movie. It all comes down to Joseph Wiseman’s fantastic performance.
BTW I only realised recently that Dr. No is supposed to be East Asian.
Joseph Wiseman outstanding in thus epic
A very good act by Joseph Wiseman.... ruthless character but a cool guy who walks like gliding through the air.... always wished East Asian guys looked and behaved Dr No... the man has class not some cheap Eastern men we always meet...
@@sarojesus3682 Please see Another Pallbearer Twilight Zone.
Dr. No is my fav Bond villain of all time. He is so cold yet somewhat elegant in his mannerisms.
Joseph Wiseman (Dr No) Did indeed make a remarkable villian......due in no small part to the absolutely chilling tone that his voice had.
@@doonsbury9656 but you can see why fleming wanted his friend Noel Coward for the role, I guess he couldn't resist saying NO.
Doonsbury yes!!! He was Blofeld in Thunderball
Yeah he just had small screen time
Same, Dr No is my favorite bond villain of them all
This dinner scene still has the best dialogue between Bond and a villain ever. Their exchanges are all so brilliant, I particularly love Bond's effort to piss No off while No keeps his calm demeanor.
Have to agree, this one is so good both cool and calm even though Bond on the inside was terrified but never showed it.
Sean got the part right just from his very first scene.
He was born to play this character
Bond always acted like this whoever who's playing the part, he's always on provocation to piss off his ennemies and make them to make a mistake
Andress says that she was glad when they got around to doing the studio scenes because she then discovered that Joseph Wiseman, playing Dr. No, was as nervous as she was. Sure didn't show up in either of their performances. Dr. No is easily one of the best three Bond movies ever.
This and he exchange with Grant. I wish him and Blofeld had a conversation like this in YOLT
Felix Leiter I agree, but I wish he hadn’t kept saying “stupid” every two seconds
Dr. No: "SPECTARRR."
Bond: "SHPECTRE?"
Dr. No: "SPECTARRR."
Sean Connery hash always had a shpecial way of pronounshing his words.
Bond: "SPHINCTER?"
@@jtb1990419 Jesus christ, that's Sean Connery? That's not how I pictured him when he was younger.
@@kic8523 you should see him when he did You Only Live Twice and then watch Diamonds Are Forever. What a change in only 4 years! And he was only about 40 when he did Diamonds Are Forever!
That's not how they say it.
"East, West. Just points of a compass each are stupid than other"
Got to love Dr. No being unbiased.
Of course he is. They both rejected him.
Haha. Well, unbiased on that one thing maybe. Or is he actually just biased against all nations because they wouldn't give him a job? He's also an incredibly unhinged but dangerously clever lunatic of course. Brilliant villain. Joseph Wiseman really set the standard from the very beginning. Everyone always goes on about how Goldfinger really set the standard for Bond movies, but IMO it merely added a few bells and whistles. Dr No and From Russia With Love laid down almost all of the foundations and did so brilliantly. Connery 100% nailed that very first introduction at the gambling table too. "Bond, James Bond" has never been delivered anywhere near as amazingly since, and in that first one, it was because he was directly asked, "Mister...?". Since then, they had him often just saying "My name is Bond, James Bond" for no reason, which just sounds weird. Terrence Young, the director, really had a big part in that though. He even made Connery into such a perfect Bond. Before this film, Connery was very rough, very Scottish and even quite bald on top. They trained him in how to move, talk and acquit himself. In his later movies, Connery got rather chubby, lazy and silly.
In the book, he did work for the East (Russians).
@@ThomasTHEONEANDONLY when he says the East, i automatically thought it's the PRC

This guy always had a subtle intimidating presence about him. I dont know if its the speaking, the calm demeanor, the accent, or just how long his entire body appears to be. Such a memorable villain.

Remember, always...shaken, not stirred. Great as the rest of this magnificent cast.
But Dalton was and remains the most book-accurate Bond.
R.I.P.
The perfect Bond villain. Humble origins, genius intellect, towering ego, ice-cold demeanor, dastardly British accent, intimidating physical presence (those metal hands!), super-luxurious hidden base, big and ruthlessly run organization (with an even larger and more ruthless organization behind him), and a thoroughly evil plan.
And as well self-loving and self-confident as the supra-natural overlord Ernst Stavro Blofeld!
kudos on the description...
R.I.P. Joseph Wiseman (*1918-+2009)
2:06 "You are just a stupid policeman" got me dying XD
The Man!! Rest in Peace...
“There are _rules_ for policemen”
I love these scenes where James Bond just casually (while with menace in the air) converses with the villain. They're sizing each other up, and it's always fascinating.
2:02 I like that Bond wants vengeance for his two fallen allies
Bond always avenges his fallen comrades
Joseph Wiseman it's either him or Christopher Lee as the most calmly sinister and best Bond villain ever. This is my favourite Bond film anyway just beautifully done.
``Our asylums are full of people who think they're napoleon or god.`` LOL.
one of the best Bond's provocation ever.

So many great lines in this scene. My favorite, "I'd prefer the revenge department" and "You are just another stupid policeman, whose luck has run out". Pretty good piece of screenwriting. Joseph Wiseman was so sinister. Such a great voice. One of my favorite actors.

Joseph wiseman played Dr No. Excellent actor-perfect for the role
I love how the new bond film, and Daniel craig's films are all connected with SPECTRE.
good thing they bring SPECTRE back, one of the only good things actually of the new Bond movies (not counting with Casino Royale which was a great movie)
Craig has Casino, Skyfall and I liked Spectre Craig is the third best Bond for me behind Sean and Dalton
It also interesting how Craig Bond villains plan line up with the Spectre motto. Counter-intelligence was Blofeld, Terrisom was Le Chieif, Revenge was Silva, and extortion was Greene
“I am a member of Spectre.”
“Spectre?”
“Spectre.”
oh come on you can’t be serious
When people cite the fencing match in Die Another Day as a good action sequence, I am reminded of scenes like these; in the classic age of Bond one of the hallmarks of the films, as common as the Gun barrel or opening credit sequence, is the moment when Bond and the villain have a casual, gentlemanly discussion. Littered with subtext and quiet contempt. Sizing one another up. Increasing the stakes. The golf match with Goldfinger. The baccarat game with Largo. The confrontation before the battle with Grant. And of course the granddaddy of those scenes here with Dr No. To me THIS is a superior action scene. Sometimes the action is in the dialogue and the details.
(I mean no disrespect to those who love the fencing match.)
My favorite Bond film, always will be. Sean did damn fine good job with his character. Joseph Wiseman too.
and just like the Dr No of the novel, Joseph Wiseman exudes that calm, cold , ruthless efficiency . when he walks he has that gliding effect. the Dr No of the novel ,though was bigger headed and bald and had pincers instead of metal hands. His long speech in the novel is better too, shows him as a real megalomaniac and highly intelligent.
If he is so ‘efficient’, then he should have killed him immediately. But NO (that name...), he wanted to ‘soften him up’...
I like how in Spectre they referenced this scene with Blofeld, the very head of the organisation, when he calls C a visionary.
“Visionaries...Psychiatric Wards are full of them.”
"Correction, criminal brains" savage
2:31 I never fail Mr. Bond!

"World domination, same old dream". Well I got bad news for you James. You're going to have to stop about about 25 more plots for world domination. This is only the first one 🤣.
James Bond 1962: Our asylum’s are full of people who think they are Napoleon or God.
James Bond 2020: History isn’t kind to men who play God
"You are just a stupid policeman." LOL, great line. As I recall, quoted from the novel.
This is where it all started folks. The Dr. No Syndrome - A villain is capable of shooting our hero in the head but doesn't. The reason why is always a fleeting one that makes no sense. in this case damaged pride? Yet the syndrome is a necessary evil that allows a hero to get to know his enemy face to face.
It's because he was trying to recruit him for SPECTRE; when he sees that this won't work, he keeps him alive for use later- presumably, he wants to torture Bond for information before killing him. And to be fair, he sent several agents to shoot Bond earlier in the film and none of them succeeded either. It DOES make sense, even if a pattern emerges in later movies.
The moral here is to never make your villains too similar, or they become a cliche.
@jiggus figgus That is what happens in the book, but it's not what happens in the movie.
jiggus figgus Yes, pleasure due to his massive EGO!
@@jonathancampbell5231 >>> Dr. No is lonely. Bond fills his inner void but the part of Dr. No's personality that engages Bond can't connect that dot.
Can't wait to see my boy, Rami Malek, try his spin on this.
I personally can't wait for them to be more original. As much as I love Rami and he will no doubt play it very well, rehashing old classic villains just seems like a bigger indicator than ever that the Bond franchise is going to crumble soon. Craig had such promise but, for me, I find him now utterly 2 dimensional, robotic, always angry and just even plain awkward in the role. I also have never been able to get over how much he looks like some grizzled, crew-cut Russian henchman masquerading as 007.

Dr No's 3 minutes of screentime in 1962 are better than all Safin's scenes in 2021
Great scene and one of my favorites in the Bond franchise. Wiseman was so good as Dr. No. The dialog was great:
Dr. No: "I even thought there might be a place for you in SPECTRE".

Hopefully, Rami (he’s obviously playing Dr. No) can measure up.

Great discourse between Sean Connery and Joseph Wiseman.
Out of all the James Bond villains, Dr. No was my favourite
Starter villains are always memorable :)
I liked when dr no called bond a stupid policemanat the dinner table classic line
"The successful criminal brain is always superior. It has to be."
He's got a point. Simply committing a crime is easy, but to do so without being caught, without being stopped, without any significant loss, without being ratted out, without being defeated by powerful, passionate and intelligent adversaries and to do so via an enormous amount of intelligence as opposed to sheer blind luck and help, requires quite a brain.
Dr No is unique among Bond villains because what drives him is desire to prove himself, unlike other Bond Villains who are driven by Greed, rage, lust and delusions of righteousness. Pride, which of course cometh before his fall.
And he's so deliciously enigmatic and emotionless.
"Are those your web fins", I said from afar. There was no answer...I assumed the worse. Dr. No, an undersea expert of the services of a secret organization.
Is that guard behind Bond same actor who played Sandor at Spy who loved me? Looks like him.
