Shall I do my Goodreads Choice Awards again? 👀
What are your predictions?
Love the reviews you do for Goodreads choice awards! Prediction is always Stephen King 🤣
Even if his book ends up in the wrong category XD
Definitely!! ❤❤
I just realized that Becky Chambers wasn't an option in the Sci-Fi category... WHY??? She would be my vote!
Yes!! Loved this video :)
GoodReads should really do a Fantasy Romance category or something like it so actual fantasy books have a fair chance to win 😔
That wouldn't be a bad idea but really you can say Sarah J Maas :P
@@BookswithEmilyFox True. 😂 Her and Jennifer L Armentrout
So true! It’s pretty much a given that Sarah J Mass, Colleen Hoover, and Stephen King will wing their categories almost every time because it’s a popularity contest rather than a judgement of quality.
+1 to this.
I don't care too much about the Goodreads awards being popularity contests, because there are already real awards that exist and reading is subjective anyway. It's definitely frustrating to continually see big names win even if a nominated book wasn't their best (same for new releases), but I'm hopeful for a few upsets this year. Also, I don't feel bad voting in categories even if I've only read one book.
That said, I do wish they had a self published category the way they have one for debut authors, so we wouldn't see republished books get nominated and to give a boost to books that don't make the cut otherwise.
That could be fun! I do wish they made sure the books were at least in the right categories XD
@@tuqaridha4821 I'm not interested in that argument. I said READING is subjective. My experience reading a book is different than your experience reading the same book, because we are different. Our READING experience is therefore subjective (which means "based on or influenced by personal feelings, tastes, or opinions"). We could both pick up the biggest selling book of the year and the most critically reject book, and we would have different reading experiences regardless of the book contents because we have different opinions.
This year was all about The Violin Conspiracy! All I'm going to say is I'm a black person who works in the library field and this is a new, black author so I'm not at all surprised that no one is talking about it, but a few of my librarian coworkers have also fell in love with this particular title. Highly recommend it!
There's book called Can't spell treason without tea by Rebecca Thorne. Sapphic fantasy romance between Queen's private guard and powerful mage who run away together to open bookshop/ cafe. For fans who love legends and lattes.
Ooh, thanks for the rec!
Finding Me by Viola Davis is outstanding imho! It is the story of her life, yes, an absolutely incredible one from poverty to Hollywood. But it is so much more. It was like therapy for me. Such much wisdom!
It’s on my tbr!
I was uneazy with Rickman book until I saw that the book was approved by his widow and... himself!
From The Guardian:
Rickman began writing the diaries by hand in the early 1990s, with the intention that they would one day be published [....] He wrote right until his death in 2016, from pancreatic cancer at the age of 69.
I was not approved by Rickman. In fact page four of the introduction states that the author isn’t sure if Rickman would approve. He basing his assumption that he would be okay with it because Rickman was asked a few times to write a book.
I voted for A Taste for Poison, too! So glad you recommended that one.
The minute I got the notification that voting was open I thought of you!
I’m glad to see some people weren’t obsessed with Babel. At first all I could find were reviews that said it was just life changing and I kept thinking there was something wrong with me because it read like a solid essay but the character development and connections just weren’t there.
Yes, the concept and setting were good but the lack of character development was grating!
I looked at the lists this morning and (I knew I read/ kept on top of new releases less than normal this year cause life) I've only read 4 of the nominated and am in the middle of one... and all of them are in different categories. So I'll be interested to see what wins, but it's definitely a popularity contest.
I didn't even know Alan Rickman had his diaries released. *Maybe* he okay'd it before death but I highly doubt it and it doesn't sit well with me, cause that's private and even past death people should respect that.
SO EXCITED!!! 📚📚🍁🦃🦃🍃🧡🍃🦃🦃🦃🍁🦃🍃🍃🦃🍁📚📚📙📖📖🍂🍂🍃🦃🦃🦃🧡🍃🦃🦃🍁🍁📙📚📚❤️❤️🧡🍃🦃🍁🍁🦃🍃🍃🧡🦃🍁🍁📖📖📙📚📚📙📙📚📚📚🍂🍂🍂🍂🍂
Fun to hear you say PAL instead of TBR on an english video! :) I haven't read that many either... but I intend to read some. The It girl is on my TBR... I'll try to read that because of the Dark academia vibes. Same opinion for Babel but still really liked it! You say there's a childfree woman not evil and not secretly longing to be a mom in the Emily Henry book? I need to read this.
Please please please read The Kaiju Preservation Society soon! I don’t read a huge amount of sci fi but this was easily one of my favourite books of the year 😊 super fast and hilarious - I can’t wait to hear what you think of it!
I read Book Lovers and I loved. BUT! I voted for Part of Your World. You should give it a try! The main character is late 30’s and it’s very funny and sweet.
I generally think the cut-off for nominees should be in September (and then the first phase of voting should last 2-ish months). It's ridiculous that Sanderson's book got nominated when it's just come out. I had the same feelings about Obama's book which was nominated and won in 2020 even though it came out during final round or just a couple days before it. I know why amazon won't allow it, because new books will sell more for christmas, but it's such a joke.
King actually lost last two years.
Rickman was writing diaries with plans to publish them, so I don't think it's bad.
He was not not planning on publishing them.
I also voted for Legends and Lattes! I loved that book, but I haven't read many new releases this year
Yeah I feel like they should give more time to do voting and stuff! I haven’t read a lot of the noms
I have a rule. If I haven't read something in a category I don't vote you and I agree on that. I feel the exact same way about the B Sandy series - like I like it but its not my favourite. I also just like to see what they pick sometimes it reminds me about books I am curious about, want to read or I see what is consider popular. I like to read new but I like to balance my reading as well and that is something I need to keep working on!
i'm with you there on the romance sis ! same same !
I really liked a taste for poison and I’m currently reading song of the cell, but an immense world was incredible. It’s all about the different senses animals have to interact with the environment and it’s so fascinating and easy to listen to, the author is incredible
Kaiju was so fun, it's not even taking itself seriously, it's Jurassic park inspired but modern ❤️ So fun, light and a bit random 😆
(Also rakes place during the pandemic)
i haven't read a lot of the nominees this year, and none in the ya fantasy category which is surprising. i highly recommend How High We Go In The Dark, it was so good and i hope it wins either debut novel or sci fi. i cried while reading it 😭
It's on my waiting list at the library! When they announce the official 20 nominees and winners I'll film another video and go through the whole list to mention the ones I want to read next year!
I read a lot more brand-new books this year, so I was surprised that I've only read two books in the YA Fantasy category and only one in each of the other genres I typically read. There are a few on my TBR, but there are a lot of books in each category that hadn't even been on my radar.
I liked (the rereleased) The Atlas Six. I watched a video on the differences between the original and rerelease tho', and I don't think I would have enjoyed the original version as much.
So excited
I looked through the categories. If I’m correct I only read one book (Delilah green doesn’t care by Ashley herring Blake) out of all nominees. Well not all of it yet but I’m planning on finishing it and I read other works by the same author.
In all the categories, i have read 4 books. So i voted for the books i have read, but it's like 1 per categorie so no comparison.
100% agree about Killers of a Certain Age! I was so looking forward to reading about some badass old ladies, but I just didn’t care (and the attempts at humour were kind of awkward). I also voted for Legends and Lattes, so wholesome, so cozy 😊 (too bad it’s up against giants)
I agree with you about Hidden Pictures - I was really enjoying it but I hated the reveal/ending!
It had such potential!
My picks of books I have read, and categories I care about are:
Fiction-Demon Copperhead
Historical Fiction-Trust or Take My Hand
Fantasy-The World We Make
Science Fiction-Upgrade
Horror-read them all and hated all of them!
Non-fiction: The Trayvon Generation or South to America..with honorable mentions given to The Song of the Cell
Memoir & Autobiography:
Token Black Girl or Finding Me
History and Biography: By Hands Now Known or Dangerous Rhythms
Honorable mentions to: American Midnight and Bad Mexicans
Poetry: Weaving Sundown in a Scarlet Light or Golden Ax
Since you loved Book Lovers i would definitely recommend Beach Read by Emily Henry as well! It was the first one i read by her and is still my favourite!
I read it and loved it! I need to read the orange cover one for the choice award of this year!
Same for me
@@BookswithEmilyFox i thought it was alright but not as good as the other two, still worth reading though
What My Bones Know was one of my favorite books of the entire year. Absolutely amazing!
I can’t wait to get to it!
Can anyone help as to why goodreads doesn’t let me follow Emily on there?😭 instead of follow i first accidentally clicked friend request and now friend request is pending and I cant follow (when i click on follow nothing happens). I just want to get updates on what she’s reading and her ratings im getting so frustrated, if someone knows why cant i follow her please help lol
That's exactly what I said about Brandy Sandy today when I saw the awards!🤣 Come on, how could people be expected to read some these books that have just come out and vote it in the next couple of weeks! I see you, Goodreads👀
It happens every year so it's hard to take this award seriously lol
And I also said the xact same thing about Alan Rickman!
@@BookswithEmilyFox I know, and this year I have read many books and so few are in the awards, and I feel great about that!
OBSESSED with The Altas Six and Babel SO GOOD my favorites and very secret society irregular witches love it so much! 🍃🍁🦃🦃🍁🍃🍃🍁🧡🦃🍁🍃📚📖🍂🍂📖📙🍃❤️❤️🍃🧡🧡🦃🦃🍁🍁🦃📖📙📚📚📙📙🍁🍃❤️❤️❤️🍃🧡🦃🍂🦃🍁🍂📖📙📚📚🍃🍃❤️❤️❤️🍃🧡
Kaiju Preservation was a quick fun read. I think I read it in a couple of sittings, it gave Jurassic park vibes.
I'm really looking forward to it!
Which books are you voting for??
Carrie Soto Is Back, Book Lovers and I’m Glad My Mom Died. I don’t think I liked or even finished any other books that are nominated this year. lol I do have some I still want to read
Wrong place wrong time and I'm glad my mom died.
Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow/Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone/House of Sky and Breath/Delilah Green Doesn't Care/I'm Glad My Mom Died/Heartstopper v4/Remarkably Bright Creatures/The Final Gambit/Bloodmarked
I think I read more books from the current year than I have in years past, so I was surprised to see so many on the lists.
I've been trying to keep up but it looks like using my library is the easiest way! What's your best tip?
They have for vote books that have 2-5k reviews, either they published this month or isnt at all popular. I wonder how they choose these books.
Ha! I'm also a Québécoise (I'm just assuming you are from your accent) that speaks and reads English almost more than French but will ALWAYS count in French. I'm a knitter so I count my stitches often and I just can't count them in English. It made me giggle to hear you do the same thing.
I am haha Sometimes I'll count in English but if I'm recounting or if it's really important, I've noticed that I switch to French haha Can't help it!
Emmiillllyyy
What song is playing at the end?
I believe it's called "time", there should be a link/name in the description box!
You should try Finlay Donnovan is Killing it! It's about a woman that accidentally becomes a paid assassin
Unrelated... I LOVE those glasses 👓 😍
Thank you :)
I voted for Babel because I really loved it and I did not read any other nominations. I did not vote for other categories, because I'm clueless about those 😄
The fantasy category feels like it’s gonna be a battle between the Stephen king fans and the Sarah j Maas fans. We’ll get to find out whois more powerful between the two fandoms.
Was just reading a book (Scattered Showers) where a character had dirty blonde hair and the love interest said it looked like wildflower honey. Now I'm stealing that whenever anyone asks about my natural shade. 😂
I struggled with fiction since I loved about 5 of them. I was so torn😢
Emily, i wanted to buy the physical copy of Legends&Lattes and they changed the cover!!! I'm sooo disappointed. I don't like it and would like to have the first edition, but have no idea where to get it :'(
I just bought mine from Chapters so this edition exist! Book depository ships internationally and should have it!
@@BookswithEmilyFox If you take a look at book depository you'll see the new cover. But now I'm hurrying to get hold of the old edition. Big THANK YOU, Emily 🥰
@@JuLie-ft4bp I think the other cover is just the UK edition!
I visited the candidates for the Goodreads Choice Awards and realized I'm clearly out of touch with what the majority reads.
Oh noooo you were so excited for Upgrade.
It was such a let down :/
It felt like a Jason Bourne book...
taylor jenkins reid's obviously winning the historical fiction category, same with colleen hoover in the romance category
The Goodread choice awards always seems like 1. a popularity contest and 2. a shopping list for the holiday season. But to be honest, your recommendations have been a better "shopping list" than Goodreads ever will be. I recently got a copy of The Three Body Problem for my uncle as a Christmas present. That series messed with my head and now I want him to suffer from enjoyment too. If you ever want to be adopted into our family, you'll get a lot of book agreement from myself and my uncle.
That series was something else!
Admittedly, I stopped rating books on goidreads because I just have a really hard time deciding, like is it 3 stars or 4...
Please do a short at the 10 minute mark! That is me with my friends
I always think it's funny because how can you expect me to like him when I know what he did?!??! Don't tell me if you're gonna go back and want me to not hate him lol
@@BookswithEmilyFox "And they will know...." LMAO Because I cannot control my facial expressions
I had an ex of a friend who would cross the street if he saw me 😂
I barely said a word to him but he could tell I couldn’t stand him lol
I made a comment about Alan's diaries when I saw it was being published and SUPPOSEDLY (though i have not done a lot of research into this, and of course he cant confirm it either) he was intending them to be published, and it was worked on by friends like Emma Thompson. I feel like if it was more of a cash grab on his death they would have published them closer to his death and not so far after? (Much like what's happening with Aaron Carter... he's got a memoir coming out that was is being released PURELY as a way to capitalize on his death its really sad). Additionally, I'd assume his Partner would still be in control of his diaries unless she has passed as well, so i'd like to think she wouldn't have sold the diaries just for funsies.
I dont know that we can ever know for sure what Alan's intent was for his diaries but there is at least some conversation suggesting it was intentional.... and i hope that is true because otherwise what a gross invasion of his privacy.
"dusty blonde" would probably be "ash blonde" lol but yes i always hated if people called me a dirty blonde, or even dishwater???? blonde (that was not common but its happened) and im like WTF can we just say blonde.... we call all shades of brunette... brunette dont we? lol
I'm sure every brunette has heard poop brown hair (or eyes lol) but usually that stops after the age of 12 XD
@@BookswithEmilyFox lol true! And definitely the worse hair comparison to be sure
What My Bones know is soooo good! I think you will enjoy it! :)
I hope so!
I voted! 📚❤️📚❤️
u make me laugh x have u got a favourite old book that u always go back to mines murder in lamut everybody hates it but me x
If Jennette doesn’t win I’ll be shocked
I never liked having my hair called dirty blonde. dark blonde is good enough
I totally agree with you on Simone St. James! The Book Of Cold Cases was just okay, and not nearly as good as Sundown Motel.
I need to read her older books but I have a feeling it will keep being my favorite by her!
@@BookswithEmilyFox I read broken girls ? I think ? It was better than the book of cold cases, but still not as good as Sundown Motel. So you are probably right.
I agree about Alan Rickman! It makes me uncomfortable if he didn't mean for them to be published.
I'm getting to the point where I don't even want to bother with looking at or acknowledging the Goodreads Choice Awards. A lot of the books on the lists came out last year. I also think that books shouldn't be in multiple categories.
But with both a Sanderson book and Babel being in the Fantasy category that will hopefully take votes away from Maas and Armentrout's books.
Hahah I had gone through all the lists and realized that I only read Legends and Latte so voted for nothing to be fair
I'm surprised you like Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow since it gave me MAJOR Normal People vibes... I dnfed after 50% because I couldn't take it anymore 😅
I'm curious how far I was into it... so far it was fine (not a fave but fine).
Legends and lattes for the win.
I'm so glad I'm not the only one who hated the Hidden Pictures ending.
I agree with your description of the atlas six, I DNFed the audiobook during the 1st third because I couldnt stand the inner voice of some of the characters.
It had such potential!
I've hardly read any of the nominees so I don't think it's really fair for me to vote
I borrowed Madly, Deeply from the library after reading The Guardian article. Page four of the introduction the author says that he isn’t sure if Mr. Rickman would be okay with the diaries being published. He was going by the assumption that he would because someone at some point told Mr Rickman that he should write a book. That aside, I skimmed through the book a bit and it’s boring. There are no stories. It’s nothing like a memoir. It was mostly short notes to himself that don’t mean much to anyone except himself. It never should have been published.
I think I read a different book then others in regards to Tomorrow, Tomorrow, and Tomorrow. Such toxic relationships
I am glad my mom died by Jennette McCurdy such a heartfelt and deep made me cry it was such a great biography ❤️❤️🍃🍃🦃❤️🧡🧡❤️🍃📚📚📙📖📙🍂📚🍂📙📖🍁🍁🧡❤️🦃🍃🍃❤️🍁🧡🦃🍃🍃❤️📖📙🍂📚📚📚🍂📙🍂📚📚🍂📙🧡🧡🍁🍁🧡❤️🍃🍃❤️🧡🧡
the Allen Rickman diaries thing is so upsetting, I don't understand how family members would publish that.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who is iffy about Reece's picks, I see her sticker as a warning sign now. I think I read a lot until I went to vote and realized I only read maybe 3 books in all of the categories combined lol. Do you also read in French? I'm trying to read more Quebecois authors. I've recently read a few books by Gabrielle Filteau-Chiba that were interesting.
If a book was written in French I'll usually read it in French! I have mostly been reading French Classics, I need to get back to trying newer releases in French!
@@BookswithEmilyFox I have a bunch of Balzac books in French that I want to start.
Their nominees don’t make much sense if some of them were recently/freshly released like the one from Brandon Sanderson. Like, what’s the point of them including it? How do the books get nominated anyway when they don’t have a lot of ratings? 🥴
❤️📚
Mediocre doesn’t have a bad connotation to me, it’s just medium or mid, it’s like 3 stars it’s fine🤷🏻♀️
one thing I'm soo confused about is why Heartstopper Volume 4 and Loveless by Alice Oseman are nominated, they're great books but NEITHER OF THEM CAME OUT IN 2022
Apparently they are going by edition, which is so dumb. (Heartstopper was Jan 4 2022 and Loveless was March 1 2022)
I absolutely agree about Hidden Pictures! I was enjoying the creepy vibes but that ending was just... oof! Terrible in several ways!!
Sometimes I wish they would only allow first books in a series to be nominated
Native English speaker! Mediocre definitely has a negative connotation even though the dictionary may say otherwise
It kinda annoys me when books partway through a series end up on the goodreads list, because you can't really judge them fairly against standalones.
While people have been loving Babel, the Sarah J Maas book in Fantasy has over 7x as many ratings. It does not matter if Babel is the favourite book of everyone who read it. SJM will guaranteed win. 😥
For me popular usually = bland. I generally prefer taking my chances with something divisive.
i'm really hoping for babel to win but seeing sarah j maas in the same category...
Yeah, I wish people had to at least put the book as "read" before voting for it. You'll often see books that have 10k ratings getting 100k votes and like... 🤨
Mediocre has always sounded negative to me too
Glad to hear I'm not alone!
@@BookswithEmilyFox yup defo has a negative connotation! I know what you mean to express though, and yeah it's hard to find another word that conveys the same meaning but without the negative connotation. Maybe average?🤔
In this case I definitely meant mediocre lol
I think the Goodreads awards is unfair and it comes down to popularity as you mentioned. Good video anyway 👌
I've seen quite a few books on the goodreads choice list this year and honestly just thought to myself _why are you here?_
Is it voted that way though 🤔 😳
no make up....looks great.
I looked at the list and shamefully realized that the only ones I read were romances… like, who am I? 😂😂
A romance reader!
@@BookswithEmilyFox normally not, but this year I have discovered Colleen Hoover and Emily Henry for me😂♥️
I love the ending of hidden pictures. It highlights that sex matters despite environment. Disproving trans ideology.
ok but hear me out… sjm is nominated. let’s be honest, since it’s a popularity contest she has the highest chance to win. the only other competitor that may give a fight is brandy. will i read the lost metal this year? no. will i vote for him out of spite against the sjm cult? yes. no i do not accept criticism i am doing the right thing. let it be my villain origin story idc
Hahaha I'm okay with it!
Anyone here have success with Brandon Sanderson? I DNF’d steelheart because it felt very “guy who wears a fedora and says m’lady.”
I did a whole video reviewing all the books I've read by him (czcams.com/video/593aBO14B5o/video.html) and Steelheart is by far my least favorite! I'd go with Warbreaker or Elantris first!
@@BookswithEmilyFox thank you for the suggestion!!
Feel like Mystery/thriller is very domestic thrillers. And I don't like those most of the time.
Totally agree on Alan Rickman btw. So awful
I won't vote as I have not read ALL of the nominated books.
I think you might be the only person I’ve seen who’s doing that.
I’m theory that’s what I wanted to try and do with my own award show the following year but I never end up reading all 20. It’s just not possible for most people
I DNF'd HIdden Pictures. The main character was annoying me and I looked up the ending and was so happy I stopped reading it.
Uuugghhhh Atlas Six is on my worst books of the year if Maas doesn't win that one will
You talking about dirty blonde...My mom always refers to my hair as dishwater blonde and it pisses me off everytime. No one wants their hair compared to dishwater, jerks.
Yeah I've always seen it as rude as being told I have poop colored hair lol
You probably watched too much "Mad Max: Fury Road" to think mediocre is bad.
