    There is no one philosophy for all martial arts. The key is the word "martial." Martial arts were developed by many people in a lot of different circumstances to wage war. Samurai, for instance, were very much strike first kind of folk. A lot of the martial arts philosophy we get in the west is sanitized and pre-packaged for commercial consumption.

    I think one of the things people miss about this franchise is that it’s also a story about two veterans. Kreese was a Vietnam veteran who trained in Tang Soo Do (a Korean style of Karate) as part of his combat training. Miyagi was a WWII veteran who was trained in Okinawan Karate as an extension of his cultural heritage. If we look at how each was affected by their respective wartime experiences you can see why Johnny and Daniels upbringing are so polarizing.

    Most martial arts originate from war tactics, and so defeating your opponent before they try to hurt or kill you is completely approved/endorsed by a lot of people. Karate's main principle is self-defense but if you know that someone will try to kill you, you should strike first to prevent that from happening. In terms of competition/sport, especially in Karate, yes, it should mainly be self-defense, but in real life dangerous situations, the circumstances can drastically change. In other martial arts, self-defense is not the main/correct principle such as Muy Thai or boxing

    Of course the Cobra Kai "way" isn't accurate to true martial arts; the idea is that Daniel (via Mr. Miagi) and Johnny (shitty Sensei WHN)'s Karate represent two different *life* philosophies - despite not being true to marital arts, the "strike first, strike hard, no mercy" way to survive in the world certainly has its merits (not as far as goodness or ethics, but in terms of survival-of-the-fittest). I suspect the show will explore this.

    • @arakuss1
      @arakuss1 Před 6 měsíci +1

      I thin there is more than survival of the fittest. Striking First if looked at as taking the initiative is a very strong lesson in life. Don't let your opponent or life determine things it is up to you instead. Striking Hard. Just go back to the first movie when Miyagi explains about Karate. Either Karate yes or no non in middle. When you make a choice put everything into that action to do it as perfectly as one can. Try your hardest. Strike Hard. No Mercy. Yes it sounds bad but it depends on No Mercy to who or what. If you make a choice, you do your hardest, you should do it without mercy, to do it without doubt. Show no fear or self doubt. In this episode. Miguel gets up tries to take the initiative to introduce himself to Sam but when Kyler shows up he gives into self doubt and most likely fear of failure. "Must not give into fear." I believe Miyagi said that in the 3rd movie. You show no mercy to fear and doubt. One should have total confidence in their action. I believe this goes into several fundamental philosophies in Japan and other parts of Asia.

    14:20 A Thing to know for you Johnny in karate kid 1 IS actually stronger than daniel in 1 since he had won 2 tournaments before and trained for years. He was mentally nerfed pretty hard in that tournament because of his rage and tunnelvision. Daniel in KK3 and Johnny from 1 are about even with Mike Barnes having been stronger than both. So right now with both having become a bit rusty are about even. So Johnny wouldnt have gotten his ass kicked. One could argue that daniel is LESS rusty because he trained his daugther more recently

    Did any of you ever see the fan theory years ago on how Daniel was actually the real bully of the original movies and not Johnny? Of course, Johnny had his own problems too, but it is very interesting to see that based on one's perspective, you could really see how Daniel was the aggressor and crossed the line a few times himself and Johnny was misunderstood. I'm not defending Johnny, but just saying he and Daniel were both high school kids who do dumb things and it was not always so black and white who was right and who was wrong. It has also become very cliche to say Martial Arts is only for defense, but a proper defense also means having to go on offense too sometimes to neutralize the threat before it gets out-of-hand and beyond your ability to control the situation and get out. Obviously, you should never intentionally try to go out and pick a fight just because you can. Martial Arts is more about discipline, self-control and respect. You learn to fight so you do not have to fight. However, it is still good to know how to fight if or when you are ever confronted or put in a situation where you are given no choice but to fight back. Just saying "just walk away" is not always an option and can even invite more attacks against you. Everything in life is about balance and knowing when to use offense and when to go on defense. Offense and defense go together. You cannot do one without the other. You learn to defend yourself, but also need to learn how to counter-attack at the same time. Otherwise, you never really neutralized the threat and your attacker can just keep coming at you.
    True, sometimes the aggressor will tire themselves out quickly and then you can just "sit back and wait" until they tire out. But, if all you do is defend yourself and nothing more, you can also tire out quickly. Unless you actually do something to counter-attack and neutralize the threat so you can then get away, nothing changes. Even Mr. Myagi counter-attacked and was not just "defense only". Keep in mind, he did technically "beat up" some high school kids. My point is he did what he had to do to neutralize the threat against himself and Daniel so they could then safely get away and/or scare the bullies away and show them he was a bigger threat. I think the reason why Daniel is so against going on offense is he equates going on offense synonymous with losing control and that is because Daniel himself has a tendency to be impulsive and hot-headed and lose control whenever he went on offense. Terry Silver really messed Daniel up and he learned the wrong lesson from all that. Terry Silver was intentionally manipulating him and wanted Daniel to lose control. But, a good fighter learns how to control himself, even when going on offense. Control is also knowing your full power, but being able to pull your punches. But a person who does not know their full power does not even know how to pull their punches, but just unleashes in uncontrolled rage. Daniel never really learned how to control his rage and know how to go on the offense in a controlled way and Terry Silver took advantage of that. Honestly, if anything, I'd say that is partly Mr. Myagi's "fault" in not properly teaching Daniel the difference

      Strike first means to be aggressive and take the initiative. But at this point in the show, Johnny doesn't mind throwing the first punch. He is still following Kreese's teachings of not waiting for the enemy to strike first.

    If someone is clearly coming at you, they intend to strike first.
    If a rapist is coming at a woman with a knife, then she better strike first, strike hard and have no mercy. But if it's a woman going after a man because she is angry at her husband, then it's a different story.
    Every situation is different.
