    Here’s a great trick i figured out: use a Sansamp GT2 and run a Klon Centaur/Klone into it. Set the Klon to unity volume, with treble boosted really high and gain at 10ish... Sansamp GT2 in classic/hotwired/california. Gain a tad lower than max... this gets you a ridiculously good metal tone. Sounds like 80s session player rack gear when you get it tweaked where you like it... i want to add some stereo chorus and phaser to complete the effect.

    Are there many Triaxis users here using the continuous control feature? This is absolutely one of the best things about this amp. For example, in LD1 green I’ll start with the drive and gain quite low so that it is a pretty clean sound and have the drive linked to an expression pedal via midi. This means I can add the distortion on the fly until the tone is very hot. I love finding the sweet spot where the tone just breaks up and becomes very sensitive to playing. This is especially useful when adding or removing effects from the chain as you can compensate as you play, or adjust the drive in response to guitar volume adjustments. It really opens up so many more nuanced tones. I love it.

      @@LeonTodd Hi Leon. I can't remember if I had to do anything top set it up, as I've had my Triaxis for 15 years and have been using this feature right from the start. I have the Triaxis on Midi Channel 1, sending a CC number 1, with the pedal sweeping from value 0 -> 127. And this works on any preset that I have applied the continuous change to. I used to use a Behringer FCB1010 for this, but recently got a Helix, and didn't need to make any adjustments on the Triaxis - both work superbly.

    I have the Triaxis and Simul Class 2:90 power amp in a shop right now up for sale but I am going to go and bring it back home. It's just to nice an amp to let go. I bought it 4 yrs ago from Ebay all racked up in a 6U rack with a Power Surge protector (Can't remember the name of) and all out of the box condition with my fav FX unit the TC Gmaj. I only paid £1500 for the lot and the guy I bought it from paid over £6000 as he also had the Jim Dunlop rack Wah-wah filling up the 6Unit rack. I just looked on ebay and there is a tatty Triaxis on there for £1250 for just the preamp. I think these preamps will just always hold their value because they were the very best along side Soldano's for tone and versatility. I can't part with it and after listening to it again I would cry if it got sold.

    ok, have to post this somewhere, I have been playing Triaxis lately and having fun with it but when you turn the gain up and drive it really hard it gets so dense you can hardly hear the notes (way too much harmonic content, I found that with the Mark V and the triaxis not having the push/ pull gets you into wayy oversaturation of your sound at high gain (and I am a fan of turning the gain down to clear that up but sometimes you want an articulate high gain sound...what to do? I finally figured out to take my 31 band graphic I have in the loop and set my V curve to taste (I use this iinstead of Dynamic Voice) then take every other slider and 0 it out(actually I found that when I did this it dropped a tad too much, so I basically found a second V formation lower on the graph for the ones that were 0'd out and this cleared out soo much harmonic content that what you get is pure Mesa but VERY articulate, even when at max gain, and you can experiment with which sliders to drop also, it makes a difference(you can start at the first one and end at the last or drop the 2nd one and end at the 2nd to last)...try it if you ever find it is just too much (this may just make me look dumb and everyone may know it but it took a long time for me to figure it out so thought I would post it)😄

    No offense but this demo doesn't convey the awesomeness of the Triaxis. My friend Andrew Amicarelli who is a phenomenal lefty guitarist and producer ran his guitar into a DBX Comp> TriAxis> Lexicon PCM 81> MESA Stereo 2:90 Power Amp> MESA 4X12... WOW Blow your mind tone. All his presets come up at the press of a button on his foot switch via midi too. Truly mouth wateringly good tone. The first time I heard it circa 2001, I went home and sold my Marshall DSL.

    Hey Leon! First of all thanks for a great demo for a really good preamp. I have one too for a few years already and I have questions for you :)
    Did you try to record it without power amp in the chain? I'm recording it straight to the sound card from "Output" channel. Then have some power amp emulation and IR on top. While I like the overall sound it has quite a lot of low which I have to remove later with eq. I ended up with 0 on dynamic voicing for lead 2 channel just to have more "flat" sound and better control.
    Did you try to record a full mix with it with double track, etc.?
    I'm using PRS CE24 for a record so it's not an issue with a cheap guitar. Still have to cut lows quite a lot. Using OwnHammer IRs which are considered good.

    Hey Leon. I really dig your triaxis tones. Thanks so much for sharing them with us! Question.. Do you have any issues with hum on your Lead channels? It doesn't sound like you do. I love my Lead Channel triaxis tones, but it is almost unusable, as it hums uncontrollably. Just curious if yours does when your only running it straight through to the Stero-Two-fifty out to speakers.. or if your x-Load is allowing some extra control, that I do not know about. If you have any insight on this and can make a video , I'm sure you would be helping a bunch of Triaxis users like myself!
    Also what version do you have? My lead 1 red channel doesn't sound anything like yours :(
    Is there any way to PM you for future questions?

      TX-4 circuit which would explain the difference in Lead 1 if you have a TX-5. The X-Load is just a reactive load so it's not adding or taking anything away hum wise. That sounds like a good video to do!

    • @jonathanhammer6437
      @jonathanhammer6437 Před 4 lety

      Hey man, this video outlines a test between them: czcams.com/video/-DDe2No4_ws/video.html
      The Reaxis sounds great for a digital plugin but when it's compared to the real Triaxis, I find it lacking. Don't get me wrong, I'd use it if I wanted the tone and couldn't find the real thing, but you can hear the low end isn't the same (but this is true for all digital modeling that I've heard).
      I would recommend if you get the Reaxis, run your DI Signal through a Tube Preamp and use a Tube Screamer either as a boost or with minimal gain to give it that extra "warmth" that adds to the depth. It's true for all digital distortion/amp modeling plugins, but I'm certain it'd give a helpful boost here too.
      That said, I think Mercuriall makes amazing products and I'd recommend purchasing if you want a tone like this. In a mix with other elements going on, I would assume it can hold up.

The triaxis is a very complicated machine, an engineer friend confirmed it to me after taking a look inside, he was confused lol Nonetheless I think that's the best preamp ever made. If only we could have a new modern equivalent/replica available..like a reaxis in a rack that would be cool. All That said I would strictly avoid buying one online, you have to check it first.

    • @LeonTodd
      @LeonTodd  Před 5 lety +1

      The X-Load is there so I could get some power amp flavour from the 2:Fifty and load it down before running into an IR on the Axe, rather than having to mic a cab.

    • @LeonTodd
      @LeonTodd  Před 5 lety

      Every amp head is a combination of a preamplifier section (generally speaking EQ and gain controls) and a power amp (to drive the speakers). One nice thing about standalone preamps is you can pair them with different power amps for different flavours, which some people love and which some people have no interest in. Use whatever gets you there!

      What Leon said I think is a weak reason to use a setup like this. I went to a rack pre amp and a separate power amp decades ago, switching from essentially the same thing you have, for 2 very different reasons: 1) You can take full advantage of a stereo sound, since the power amp you'll use has 2 channels. The only way to do that, aside from using rack gear, is to buy another amp. Yes, you'll need a second cabinet (or a stereo cabinet, but having 2 cabs means you can move them apart from each other to truly hear the stereo image.) Put a stereo effects processor either in the effects loop of the pre amp or between the pre and power amp, and you'll have a stereo sound that will blow your mind. The 2nd reason for using the Tri Axis, is you can set up all sorts of different sounding presets, them call them up via a midi foot controller. You can set up your effects presets to switch at the same time as your pre-amp presets, using the foot controller, by stepping on only 1 button. Without an effects looping switcher (and lots of cables), you can't do that with a traditional setup. Plus, with an amp like a JCM 800, the only way to get different sounds is to rotate knobs. How do you do that while in the middle of a song?
      I just recently aquired my Tri Axis and a 2:90 (my old rig was an ADA MP-1 thru a Mesa Stereo 50/50, also a great sounding rig!), so I'm still dialing it in. But those 2 reasons I stated above, I feel are the real reasons to go this route. Hope that helps ya!

    How would it sound to run the output directly into an interface, and then running a cab impulse response in a DAW? I've been looking at used triaxis preamps online, but buying a poweramp and a reactive load seems like a massive waste of money if it's not necessary.

    • @MrSneakyPants
      @MrSneakyPants Před 5 lety +1

      It's the IR, not amp sims, but no. I hear it too. There are some EQ tricks to remove it though. The 'fizzy' sound in the distortion is around 4k usually. A nice sharp Q EQ, removing a tight section of the spectrum around the 4k, should help a lot.
      Also, some of it is the IR quality. I find that the Ownhammer IRs don't give me any of that funky noise.
