Can you please explain what 'borderline racist' means? It was written so you would think a racist comment was coming but it never did, this is subverting your expectations in the name of comedy. If anything it anti-racist and you just didn't get it.
@@TerenceA72 the joke at the end where Hal says he would own Abe is what the title is referring to. I don't think it's racist personally but you could argue against that

Oh man, the conviction in Hal’s voice and facial expressions at “I WILL OWN YOU” only to transform into terror. This is too funny.
Yeah nex time u are born a slave and see if it's still "funny"
Yes! If he said on purpose and without regret, he would be a bigot, but his terror revealed his true decentness 😆
🤣🤣
Also trying to maintain the intense heated anger xD Beautiful!
I took own as bea…now that word, but he would win the game. Word choices does make a difference when words and phrases can be used to mean different things.
Hal’s utter despair at the possibility that he might have accidentally said something racist to his friend really speaks to his heart. Even in the midst of his HEATED argument, there’s still a lot of places he wouldn’t go.
Because that’s his friend.
A true friend
The fact that the friend very quickly moved past it shows that he knew what he meant.

Hal only sees a group of black professionals as professionals, and is considerate about his words even when angry at a friend. Hal is a real one. Don't lose a guy like him over a poker game.
Today he is considered incredibly fucking racist for not recognizing he was wrong for this as he's white and therefore has privilege over them. As well as for not seeing them as being black because one can only understand blacks by looking at everything through lens of race and only race. This is just brilliant. Abe's shocked expression when he thought Hal was calling him racist only to twist to confusion when Hal called him classist. We don't get great comedy like this anymore.
This show was extremely ahead of its time
Even I was thinking he would call him racist.
Because how was just a nice guy. Not perfect but not nefarious. I had a similar situation this week when I saw a TikTok about white girls on a high school sports team putting on eyeblack that get progressively weirder and the last girl had thick eyebrows and a mustache painted on. All the comments were like "I was afraid of where this was going" and then it finally hit me that everyone else was thinking it was going to end in blackface, but that didn't even cross my mind.
This is an awesome clip.
We totally do get comedy like this today as well tho.
So this is how Walter White got the gambling addiction
The way cransten made me think he was going to say black but replaced it with professional without an obvious pause was incredible acting

The twist in this episode is so freakin hilarious and clever. Just when you think they're going 'there' and it completely swerves you and it's all about class 😂
The opposite of real life - focus on race so nobody starts to ask questions about the ruling class.
The buildup to what you THINK is coming, just to not have it come, is good. Then the surprise actual joke at the end is absolutely perfect. Great writing here
To be honest, you can actually see Cranston's amazing dramatic acting ability here. He made full use of it in Breaking Bad, but here he is already showing his chops.
His performance as Hal is incredibly underrated
He is ridiculous and cheesy as Hal, what are you on about lol.
Over the top over-dramatic acting isn’t “amazing ability” it’s just silly. And there’s nothing wrong with silly, but it’s not great talent, it’s just energy.
I love Nic Cage, but he’s not trying to be serious in many roles, he’s gloriously weird.
Even though Malcom in the Middle was his breakthrough, he was actually considered for Breaking Bad for his performance on X-Files, two years earlier.
@@NoCZcamsName1 The argument may BE silly, and the dialogue may be portraying a silly way of thinking but the way he delivers it like he's convinced of it and firmly stating it aloud is literally just as intense as when he does it in Breaking Bad, if the dialogue was simply about something serious, and all the ambience was built to accomodate such a mood I assure you there would be no noticable difference
@@Jack_Woods except for all the misdirection and jokes 😂
i do really love how malcolm’s family started rubbing off on stevie’s as the show went on, like stevie became increasingly like malcolm and abe started adapting hal’s craziness. there was that one episode where malcolm said whatever his family was that made them so dysfunctional was contagious, and i think they did a good job proving that as the show went on
Stevie's family was all sorts of fucked up well before he befriended Malcolm. His mom was such a huge control freak, she was insane. Then she abandoned her family out of the blue. No wonder Stevie and Abe changed after such a traumatic event and Malcolm's family were always there for them.
@@Darkko88 they were always meant to show the tension under the surface of repression, which is why Stevie and his dad grew increasingly sassy, and his mum had the whole 'running away to discover herself by finally having sex without guilt' arc.

Abe is easily one of my favourite characters in the show. His and Hal's relationship is magical! :D
I especially like the fact they are total bros, like the episode where the poker crew talks about relationships and casually ask Hal how many times a week he has sex. “14” Abe stood up to the guffaws and said “trust me, I’ve been on vacation with this guy, he’s underselling himself.” That’s a bro who’s kinda tired of Hal’s good sex life but also jealous. 🤣🤣🤣
Heisenberg and Uncle Ruckus. A friendship that we never expected to see.
Well, it helps that both of the actors are phenomenal at what they do, lol
His wife is absolutely hilarious too
@@Ocyla omg, kitty! Yes, very good!!
I love the scene when they make up when Hal is like, "Pardon me for wanting to play poker with my best friend!" and Abe is like, "I was excited for you to come over, too"
Abe's delivery of "You went home crying to your MAMA!" doesn't fail to crack me up haha.
hahaha
it’s going to blow peoples’ minds in 30 years that Uncle Ruckus and Waltuh had a show together
This scene matches the intensity of any Breaking Bad scene. The writing and the acting are simply splendid.
And Hal has some of Waltuh's manerisms too 😂
Watching Malcom in the Middle really shows how much different Bryan Cranston's Heisenberg voice is.
And yet you can still see shades of Heisenberg in the performance.
Cranston is a genius.
The voice is similar, the tone is completely different
That moment with the throwing up the arms in a huff is straight from the BB pilot I think.
I've only watched bits and pieces of Malcolm in the Middle and honestly, I didn't realise they were the same person for a long long time
In breaking bad, it’s almost like he is strongly whispering , whatever that is

“Shut-up and get the cards”

*Original comment a Month Ago* I love how in Hal’s heart, even as angry as he is, he would never suspect his friends of racism. His only concern was that he was being laughed at for being poor, one of his few insecurities, that even then, doesn’t bother him too much.
That whole family lacks in the shame department, which is why we love them.
Its peculiar though how the first joke, about them ganging up on him, hinges on his obliviousness to the racial angle, while the second joke, about him owning him in a rematch, hinges on his overawareness of the racial angle.
@@grantn.9061 That’s because Hal has been know. To say the wrong thing many times before. Just look at his many bosses lol. Hal also doesn’t pretend racism doesn’t exist.

As someone who has been watching Malcolm since 2000 and is one of the few shows I own on DVD that I watch to this day - it makes me smile seeing all this appreciation from new and old watchers alike. This show is absolutely phenomenal.
Edit - Changed 1999 to 2000. I got the debut year wrong sorry.
That's not possible; Malcolm in the Middle debuted in 2000.
I do the same thing with South Park. I always remember it debuting in 1996 because I was in 6th grade, but it didn't actually air until 1997. But I do remember that our middle school tried to outlaw SP shirts and iron-ons and backpacks. I'll never forget how they made one kid turn his shirt inside-out because he wore a South Park shirt with Cartman on the front, with a caption that said, "Yeah I want Cheezy Poofs".

Peak clever writing in regards dealing indifferences , we need these today more than ever
This show handled race so well,, by not handling it .. black characters weren’t “black characters” they were just characters.. it’s weird so many shows have an issue managing this now and days
Well they did handle it, by making racism as a concept absurd and nonsensical.
Example, the grandmother is racist and Lois tries to get their black friends to act as black stereotypes to spook her away. But none of them were the stereotypes and as such their attempts at acting that way were seen as forced. That is extremely well handled by reversing the narrative of using racism as more than an undesirable trait, but a physical weakness to a seemingly invulnerable and evil woman.
Implying that it was a good thing for the main characters that she was racist. In order to empower the characters enough by giving them kryptonite.
It's not weird, it's culture Marxism, and stirring up an imaginary race war to deflect from the real division - the rich and the poor.
@@kinkajuu1 yeah totally agree! Well put.
