Today we will talk about those precious nails that are one of the most essential parts of your kalimba playing. I am sure that you may be wondering what is the perfect length for it. Is there also a specific shape that makes the sound better? How long is too long as regards to your kalimba playing? Do nail extensions or gel nails make it better?

I try not to bite my nails so I cut them as short as possible so there is nothing to bite.
I just play my kalimba without nails, with the pads of my thumbs. After a week or two to build up the calluses (no more painful than with guitar), the sound is perfectly fine, no buzzing or clicking

Ate Robin! Remember me? The problematic one who suffers to tune her Kalimba? Like it is tuned but it doesnt feel right? HAHAHA i have a good news! I have two kalimbas now, the new one is already tuned and the older one is not, its almost 2 months since i practice songs with my new kalimba.. then i decided to learn or try to tune again the older one. And now, they are already in tuned!!! And i am so happy, i know how to adjust the keys too!😍 thank you for your tips.
About the nails, i have long nails thats why i hear clicking sounds then i tried to cut it short like what u said, the normal lenght it sounds good! Yeyy! Omg i cant hide my expression.

I've been watching a lot of your vids to help me decide whether or not to get a kalimba (I think it might help redirect my severe fidgeting due to ADHD). I have very short fingers/small hands in general, but my thumb nails are also short and stubby, so this is one of my main concerns regarding whether or not I could effectively play it.
I see, thank you for being open and transparent about this, i really appreciate it. Have you tried to make your nails a bit longer even if it's just the one on yoyr thumbs?
That’s not something you really need to worry about. It really doesn’t matter that much. You play an instrument for yourself and to have fun and you do what your body can do. I have short nails and play nylon string guitars. You can play with no nails at all if you really want to. You get a brighter tone with nails, but you get the same notes with the meat of your thumb

I'm a newbie kalimba player. I don't grow out my nails ever.. I like my nails to be super short and now that I play it, my thumbs tend to position upright just so the nails can touch the tines.. like your example. I'm getting used to it though but my thumb flesh are becoming asymmetrical.. 😅

About the shape of the nails, I also experienced the same thing. Ny nails are square shaped, but then I tried to also file the edges to make it a little bit oval. Haha

I bite my nails a lot but still play the kalimba, my nails dont reach the end of my thumb so i just use my thumbs to play, instead of my nails, is that normal? It doesnt hurt for me, also i play it in the correct position.
Well as long as it doesn't hurt it's fine. Some people just complain that it is painful, thus the video. 🥰

@@TipsKalimba Its kinda like a thing I saw on a previous video and it kinda looked like a clip that you put on your thumbs to protect your fingers. Maybe a sunlp, not really sure tho.
whenever I play, it slowly chips away at my nail, making it shorter and messing up the shape. Im not sure if I'm doing something wrong, but could u help?...
Try to play in a more relaxed grip. Your thumbs should not be fully flexed. :)

Well, if you do not experience any nail pain, you can keep them short. We have friends here who complain about experiencing nail pain and this will help A LOT. 🥰
