Columbus is a village in New Mexico of roughly 1,800 people that sits along the U.S.-Mexico border. On the opposite side you'll find the town of Palomas, Mexico. Many people here have relatives on both sides of the border.
What makes this region unique is the fact that hundreds of children cross the border daily to attend school in America. All of them are U.S. citizens.

This is a real eye opening video for me. I never knew that situations like this existed. However it seems that all these people are genuinely interested in getting these children a great education the right way. My hats off to the mayor and school principal for caring so much about these kids. I'm 1/4 Mexican, an American combat veteran, a former police officer and I'm happy these children are getting the education they deserve. Glad both countries are working together on this as well. I wish nothing but the best for the future of these children.

While people who don't even live here or not from here can we fall the benefits of all of these government assistant programs free of charge. Which is bullshit. If you work for a living and can you just pay your bills and maybe have a little bit extra left over you can't qualify for any of these things. I lived just like these kids, but we were in Laredo. It was so hard to go to school in US and live in Mexico, but I finally graduated High School, moved to the US, went to College and now I am a teacher. I pay all my taxes every year without any loopholes and I've never received Medicaid or Food Stamps. We are in the middle class that will pay more taxes, just in time for the older Medicare population that paid taxes for me to go to school. These kids are an investment. They know what it is like to work hard and to do this everyday is very draining. I have such a strong work ethic because I struggled everyday like these kids.
I'm crying to see all these kids so brave and go through this hardship everyday. I'm so touch that they can go school and learn!! I hope these kids will have a bright future and able to help others kids too. 💕💕💕

i used to have to do this with my brother but we had to walk miles to the border cross it and then walk more miles to get to school
One of my youngest cousins had to do that too. He was living with a family member near the border and did that until I offered to let him live in my house while he studied. He finished school a couple years ago and is now studying for a medical degree in California and may be a doctor next year.

I crossed the border every single day through out elementary junior high and high school from Tijuana to San Diego. It was an everyday hassle for my parents and myself. My parents still live in Tijuana, I really got tired of crossing the border every day and now I live in San Diego. Now as an adult I'm happy for the way my life turned out to be..

Watching this video brings me back memories. I also had to go through a similar situation. I would wake up at 3:30 in the morning and cross the border from Tijuana to San Diego every day. I would cross around 6:00-7:00 am, go to school, and then go back at 5:00 in the afternoon just so I could get home at 7:00 pm and pretty much sleep. There was traffic both ways because there were many people like me doing the same process every day. I lived this life for about 5 years. I was lucky to be a kid and sleep while my dad drove through the 3 hours of traffic but some have to walk. Now I'm a college Junior close to getting my degree in the career of my dreams. The worst I think was changing into my JROTC uniform in the back of my dad's car while parked at my school's parking lot. Any wrinkles would get me in trouble and shirt holders were a pain to put on Besides, It was really embarrassing if any of my classmates saw me through the car windows. Also, it sucked not being able to stay after school with friends or join a club. Anyhow, I live here now as a US citizen. Not every student gets the same advantages and seeing this Mayor help these kids is really touching for me. I'm glad there are people who are this understanding. I can tell you in all honesty, after living this, I can't emphasize how important education is. People go through hell for it.

The Constitution doesn't have anything to do with it. In order to attend public schools for free you usually have to show proof of residence in the school district. If you don't live in the school district you can either pay to attend their schools or go to a private school. Being citizens gives them the right to enter the country whenever they want, which allows them to choose an American school if they prefer.

My older siblings would go through this routine. Our parents had them born in the states. And made sure they got an American education as well. Although they lived in Juarez Mexico and came home to Juarez at the end of the day.
My sister is now on her way to being an ob-gyn doctor and my brother is finishing his police academy training. Our parents moved to the states officially when they were around 9 and 10. My mom just got her citizenship.
The case is, the parents that have their children cross a border to attend an American school while they live in Mexico isn’t anything else but to purely provide their children a better future and education. Which I will assure you, those children will utilize it to their best abilities and follow through it.
Others like to assume these people don’t know the value of things and living here in the United States. They know very well what value and opportunities they are given by being allowed to take their children to school here.
