  • Tintern Abbey: Explore the Ruins (Monmouthshire, Wales - April 2018)
    Explore the ruins of Tintern Abbey, in Monmouthshire, Wales. Join me to look around the lodgings within the monastery, the chapel, and of course the main Abbey, including its stunning Great West Window.
    This Cistercian Abbey was built over the course of 400 years between 1131 and 1536. It was handed over to Henry VIII's officials during the Dissolution of the Monasteries, and despite being open to the elements, it still remains a fantastic example of Gothic architecture.
    This is the first in a series of Explore the Ruins videos - further videos coming soon!

    We were here last August! What an evocative place it is. The fact that we had no sun made it even more so. Hauntingly beautiful in the clouds and rain.

    I love exploring ruins! They have an eerie feel that I adore. The music fits nicely with the shots and adds a creepy feel. Could you just rock up at this place or did you have to pay an entrance fee?

    That is a massive ruins and it looks like fun to explore. We could definitely visit Tintern Abbey while we are in the UK since it's not all that far from where we are staying. We need to see more of Wales so we might check this out.

    I like the music of this one! Kind of mysterious. I wonder what happened that the abbey became like this. Was it built without a rooftop or did it collapse?

    • @TheGetawayGuide
      @TheGetawayGuide  Před 6 lety

      It was built with a roof, but in the 1500s Henry 8th closed down the Roman Catholic religious communities like abbeys and monasteries. The metal was stolen from the roofs (to sell) and the buildings became damaged over time. It's very sad when you think how beautiful it must have been originally.
