As someone who played OW 2, I wasn't surprised to see the prices. Games expect us to pay $10, $15, or even $20 for a skin and then release extensions of the game in parts for $15 each, and then a Battle Pass that automatically unlocks the new character for $10. It does get... A little ridiculous.

Yeah, buddy. Would be nice to see a bit more free fan service stuff. Keep all of the paid stuff, prices, whatever. But don't intentionally make all free skins uninteresting or forgettable, with only cool shit being a dollar on a fishing pole.
If I worked for a game company, I'd totally work off the clock once in a while on the weekend to release a cool skin, as a thank you to the community at least a couple of times a year. Make a social media release and thank the community. Make it a community series where the team does a new character each time.
Obviously that'd require a blessing from the boss and agreement from the other parts involved, but I think it could be easy to get everyone on board if as an artist you draft a couple ideas and say you would want to do it.

CSGO had an almost acceptable micro transactions for skins, considering you could earn boxes and skins and then sell them, which then allowed you to buy keys to open boxes and sell those for even more money if you got something rare, which was really cool back when I played in 2014, even then skins were somewhat outrageously expensive going into the hundreds. And the only skin I remember being wild was the Howl, which went for thousands. And there was obviously the glaring problem of gambling, and eventually how inflated skins actually became. But the fact that it could have been a recycle with skins and boxes makes me wonder how we could implement that into games these days without the worst of those issues.

I'm in the same boat that the prices themselves aren't the issue, but the combination of you needing to spend real money to unlock it, you can't have duplicate characters in a match (for obvious reasons), and the fact there's already a lobby dodging problem, it's just gonna make DLC launches feel rough unless they make some significant changes. There's also the argument of the new characters introducing a Pay-to-Win element, because from what we've seen from the leaks, the new characters might have some strong abilities.

A lot of the time on DBD (sorry), I get excited when I have enough iri shards to shop around for a cool cosmetic in the store. It would be cool if TCM at least had something like that, to make it feel like I have a goal. Because it feels really good to have something to show for the time I've invested in playing a game. It kinda feels like a small "thanks" from the developers tbh.
Sure, it isn't the GRANDEST gesture, but it's nice and it keeps things moving. Doesn't hurt, and it shouldn't be that difficult to add. It's not like thinking up a pricing structure was hard, simply apply that to an in game currency that you creatively named, implement it, and you've probably done a lot to help the livelihood of your game. I hope they're doing more than just "looking into it", I guess is my point.

  • @dozzy9984
    @dozzy9984 Před 8 měsíci

I kinda understand that pricing. Yeah, it's high and alienating players who can't afford to buy gameplay DLCs (characters). But also, it is a game that's sitting on a high cost license, either they have to repay some kind of loan that let them have it or they need to make enough to accomodate the licensing monthly fee on top of being able to pay their workers. What I don't understand is developer getting into fights on twitter with people who complain - like, that can't be good.
Also, about issues, I'm stunned that they didn't just get that matchmaking system present in League of Legends or Smite, where you pick who you'd want to play and if possible game would try to accomodate you (and if not, dodging lobby is met with penalty). Without that it will become a problem (unless they'll just remove no clones restriction). From what I saw game already is a lobby simulator, which turns people off from playing it.

I honestly do think this could seriously harm (or outright kill the game) for two of the reasons you mentioned:
The lobby dodging and people who will just stop playing because they don't want to pay for the characters
Right now, I spend far too much time sitting in the damn lobby that it just sucks my desire to play the game sometimes. Lobby dodging is bad now but it feels like it's going to be a hundred times worse once the DLC comes out. I don't care who I play as so I likely won't get the characters until this game demonstrates it has some actual staying power but I'm not going to sit there for 6, 7, 10 minutes trying to get into a game as all the HAVES fight over getting to play their DLC people while the HAVE NOTS sit there twiddling their thumbs.
You didn't mention it but the DLC potentially becoming a Pay to Win thing will also kill the vibe real fast if Gun gets too cute with the DLC and makes them the clear #1 choice when playing the game. DBD arguably has a bit of this to it but that's a lot easier to swallow when characters are $3-5 a pop rather than $10...

Personally, I think the pricing is a HUGE issue. A character skin, an animation, and a weapon skin cost nearly half the cost of the game, for a paid game that's absolutely ridiculous. I WANT TCM to do well, give DbD some real competition and force them to innovate in better ways; ultimately it's what's best for the community. And while I don't think this is going to be a game killer, it's kinda ridiculous to charge that much money for something like that. If this was EA doing it, we'd be calling them out for "typical EA greed", but b/c it's a game that people WANT to do well (for obvious and understandable reasons) I feel people are trying to justify something that under other circumstances, they'd be crying out about. That's just my 2 cents anyway, I was doing research about getting this game but if this is their monetization model, I think I'll sadly have to pass. I hope they fix things in the future, and that they take good care of the community they have

Charging 10$ for ONE character is insane to me. I'm not used to that and I definitely am not able to spend that in a game that I've recently bought for 40€.
We've heard it many time "people aren't guaranteed to play them" blah blah blah.

With the current issues with the game right now, it probably wasn't the best timing to release that. With the backlash of removing the cross play, which was the major marketing strategy. Another thing, is because people will be paying a lot for these characters, there is a chance you wouldn't be able to play them. I think they need to add the ability to queue as the character you want, so that you don't get people dodging lobby's when they don't get to play the character they want.

So in TCM’s defense people are often comparing them to DBD for many (often dumb) reasons. For DBD their pricing is not comparable with the exception of MAYBE 2 DLCs/characters (compared to TCM’s character price) since those are the closest to what we would see in TCM but even then the prices are the same/very similar. People are also comparing apples (DBD dlc with 2+ characters) to oranges (TCM’s dlc with 1 character) to bananas (TCM’s premium content). People also forget that BHVR is not an indie company like GUN is and want to treat them as equals when they are far from it. Now Pinhead and Nic Cage are the only DBD DLCs that can be somewhat compared since they are single character/roles and I’ll show my simplified comparisons below without comparing the process of making the characters since TCM uses irl people for filming before digitizing what they recorded whereas DBD purely does computer animation/rendering.
    ~Similarities~
Pinhead (vs Family): has a unique mori, perks, power, and speaks in-game
Nic Cage (vs Victim): speaks in-game, unique perks, “character specific” voice-lines, and cosmetics
    ~Differences~
Pinhead (vs Family): cosmetics (that cost about $10 a piece), no power level up, no unique stats, no character specific voice-lines, add-ons instead of perks related to power, and only 1 mori (with no other options outside of entity death or bleed out).
Nic Cage (vs Victim): cosmetics cost about $10 a piece, no unique power (or perks for power), no unique stats, “character specific” voice lines are random, and limited to 4 perks per match instead of 3.

And for me, I think the premium is a bit high, but I also understand that Greg Nicotero was not a cheap guy to hire for that. They gotta recoup the prices of paying him and then try to make some profit.
But the prices per character is just too damn high. I look at DBD, and having to compare chapter vs chapter, the Alien chapter was $12 USD, and it came with the addition charm and costume for Ripley. On top of that, it was both characters.
There is just simply no excuse for TCM to charge that much for potential “pay to win” characters since the next Killer has an ability that doesn’t really have a substitute in the base game, and to cost that much. And the lobby dodging will become enormous since if you DO pay that, you’re gonna want to play the character.
THIS is what folks mean it might kill the game. A lot of folks aren’t gonna bother with even buying, and still won’t be able to find matches cause of it.

The price list as a whole is good if you look at cosmetics thats cheaper than dbd(ignoring recolours) yeah the characters could do with a combo pack, maybe buy 1 get the other half price but overall i cant complain.

I think for the skin and execution price is fine they do nothing for actual gameplay . But for the characters yes because u r buying something for a chance to play. And then to top that off everyone who bought them will want to play them lobby dodging worse then they r already. I would say expect really long waits for a lobby to fill.

The only thing I have a problem with is the price of the characters. $10 per character is insane. Cosmetics can be expensive because ultimately, you're not missing anything important. The elephant in the room has to be addressed. DBD has a cheaper base price, cheaper DLC characters and possibly characters that come with more. League of Legends characters are $10 but have more to them and the game is free. I don't mind pay $5 for a character but $10 per character or half the cost of the game for two new characters is insane.

I love TCM at the moment as it suits my prefered stealthy playstyle alot more than DBD.
But I agree with you that when I have leveled up every character I will probably get bored if there are no "Challanges" to do.
Part of my addiction to DBD was joining at the Sadako chapter and having all those historic archives to complete. That I did BTW. I only have the latest one to finish now.

Just to remind people, in DBD a single cosmetic for one resident evil character can be 15$, and theres a few of these for other licenses as well. Not defending them on this- it's overpriced af to put three cosmetics at 16$, but this needs to be a more widespread attack. 15$ for a single skin is even more outrageous, and some games, like league of legends, is now dropping 30$ to even potentially 200$ cosmetics as well.

  • @noctrenn5636

I have to hard disagree on a couple of point in the ''pros'' section, I do not believe the dev are announcing this in an effort to be ''transparent'' with the player base. I think it's obivous they are simply testing the waters, seeing how the player base reacts before actually realising anything. ''Here's a 17$ piece of content! Wait, you guys think it's too expensive? Here, we'll drop it to 15$'' and you just know that people are gonna be gullible enough to believe it's now worth it cause the price was lowered. It's literally predatory marketing 101. You just have to look at black friday to see it in action, companies boost the prieces of items right before and then they ''lower'' the prices to the target profit they wanted and people fall for it every single year.
I also think that believing they priced their content that way is because ''they really are confident the content is really worth those amount'' has to be the most anti-consumer stance someone can take. I'm fairly sure that whoever design the content and whoever decides the price tag probably have never met and are likely not even working in the same building. Game development and marketing/financial decision are world's apart.
Finally, saying ''oh well, you have to pay just as much if not more in other games'' is also extremely anti-consumer. One of the very reason why cost of living is at an all time high and people are struggling is in part because of that mentallity and because of people just shrugging off price increase or unfair price tag just because ''it's just as bad in other games''.
Last thing, I'm in no way under the impression devs should just hand out free stuff, of course not, they are at the end of the day a company whose purpose it to make money ultimately but alienating a big part of their player base by being so agressive with their monetization of the game could potentially hurt it on the long run. I'm not saying that this decision alone is gonna kill the game, but when you add this to the poor decision of removing crossplay for weeks for PC players, the way the devs are handling the Reddit community, the questionable balance and gameplay decisions, etc. all of those add up and for some players being presented with such a steep price tag for upcoming content might just be the exscuse they need to peace out and move on to another game.

I don't get this if they wanted to triple the money they wanted to take make with this system why not make a battle pass for 10 bucks. People would grind the game much more and you would make the money from people who got the game for free on the xbox game pass. Somehow the devs miss this idea when making the game it would only make so much sense. Now you will have people buying and not buying these items.

To talk about the pros mentioned in this video:
Transparency is a wonderful thing to see from a team making a game I want to see succeed. And I want this game to succeed. I don't think there is any downside to that.
Assuming price of something correlates to quality is a lot more of a stretch to me. Diablo 4 is priced at the same as you would spend on other games out there like Baldur's Gate 3, but I bet most people you ask will conclude that Diablo 4 isn't worth its price tag simply because of its price tag. Call it confidence if you want, others could call it potentially milking the IP for what it's worth before it potentially dies and I could see both arguments.
Industry standard doesn't excuse anything for this game or any other game, for me. Just because most games have some battle pass or extra DLC released later for more money doesn't mean every game released today needs that. Case in point, the aforementioned Baldur's Gate 3. If a battle pass is worth it to you, then it's worth it to YOU, but that doesn't make it worth it to every player or a free to play player. That goes for any game, even a game in the same genre as TCM, like DBD. TCM, whether the dev team or player base want to admit it or not, is competing for the community to either be exclusively played by or at least share an audience with the community playing DBD. Some play both, some play TCM out of frustration with DBD, but they want the same players, people who enjoy asym horror games. It's not a great start to expect people who paid 10 dollars for an entire DLC and chapter in the more popular much older game that people still play to come to a completely new game on the market and pay more per character when we've not seen any new characters yet from the devs. DBD and TCM both released with a free cast, but DBD then released nurse as free DLC with Nea for the first DLC wave to show players they can expect quality. TCM devs just expect you to expect quality up front as they charge you double what DBD would. That's insane to me, coming from the underdog game in terms of player base and size in the genre. And that's not even getting into the cons that have already been talked about by plenty of people.
As for the last pro, keeping the game running? Look they could price cosmetics whatever they want and people will buy them if they want them. They can do whatever they want to do if it makes them think it will keep the game alive longer. But just remember this, just because they seem to think, and you and others may seem to think it will keep the game alive, pay walling anything you need to have in order to play the game will always turn people away. Cosmetics are not a requirement. A new character isn't inherently a requirement, but if they ever release a victim that's just a strictly better version of one that is free, and it costs money, then it will upset people. And looking at the spoiled potential power Danny has, well. Let's just say for the sake of keeping spoilers unspoiled, he's better than probably any victim so far. But he'll also cost you 10 dollars to play. AND if someone else buys him and plays him in your lobby and you also spent 10 dollars? Well you're just out of luck. Unless you want to lobby hop until you find a lobby where you can play him and then the problem is shifted to the next person wanting to play him, creating a never ending cycle. And assuming no one buys the new characters, a crazy hypothetical, then how is the price of the character keeping the game alive if no one or not enough people buy them to keep the game going for more new characters? Unlikely to be the case, but a weakness in the argument nonetheless.

10:00 so long as there are map updates and general content updates, those gamers should be fine. i've been in that position for awhile now financially, and tbh you don't need new cosmetics to make a game still fun. it just makes it look a bit prettier. new characters - those are huge for keeping the game fresh. but you're typically expected to pay for those, and I know that when I buy a game that is perfectly engineered to peddle cosmetics. the most we could expect them to do is to lower the base prices for new characters, cosmetics, executions, etc. I can't expect the devs to make things super accessible to me because of my shit financial situation, and tbh it's on me for buying the game in the first place.

  • @seducedbysasquatch
    @seducedbysasquatch Před 10 měsíci

It won't kill the game, but it's definitely some rough pricing. They should bundle it all together for a cheaper price. If you only want to buy DLC for gameplay purposes, you'll only really want to purchase the new characters ($9.99 each). That's still a bit pricy too, but more understandable. I personally could care less about cosmetics, they are fun and nice to have, but a waste of money imo unless you have excess money to spend on them. Anytime I've bought a cosmetic, I've used it and gotten bored of it so quick and unequipped it. It would be nice to earn an in-game currency to purchase skins and special executions (sort of like DbD with iri shards), but I wouldn't be upset if you *had* to pay for them.

42$ for the game itself, which for now is extremely repetitive, plus 16$ for skins? For a charcter that youre not even guaranteed to be able to play in the match. Idk, i think its sus & i think theyre milking money from the players BECAUSE its such an iconic game.
To be fair, i do think the pricing will kill a majority of the game.
And another thing, they already made their money, 10 fold. Millions of buys at 42$? Theyre sitting on piles of money right now, they shouldnt make their player base spend this much money on skins.

  • @cheeze6544

Personally, biggest problem is how the game only allows you to have one character in the game.
To pay 10 dollars to get a character but you cant even play them because everyone else wants them too and gets them first or smth, its simply not something i can see working for the game. I also personally find the prices for a payed game to be.. a lot. its one thing for free games like overwatch or fortnite, but this is a 40 dollar game with more content be 15-10 dollars with no way to get it for free and that to me is too much. of course im just one player and it will most likely work out for them, it just makes me sad to see and i may just drop the game for it. 😓

Just new killers or survivors separately plus an overpriced cosmetic.
