- This 1940 presentation, "Cavalcade of the Academy Awards," features highlights of past Oscar ceremonies including Shirley Temple and Walt Disney, plus acceptance speeches for films released in 1939 with recipients and presenters including Vivien Leigh, Judy Garland, Hattie McDaniel, Fay Bainter, Mickey Rooney, Thomas Mitchell, Sinclair Lewis, and more, with host Bob Hope.

Gone with the wind, Wizard of oz, Goodbye Mr. Chips , Wuthering heights,Mr Smith goes to washington, not a bad year for quality.
Clark Gable had threatened to boycott the Oscars if Hattie McDaniel wasn't allowed to sit with her co-stars from GWTW, but Ms McDaniel persuaded him not to. What a class act they both were.
It wasn't the Oscars, it was the film's premiere in Atlanta that McDaniel (and her black co-stars) were prevented from attending that Gable threatened to boycott (as you say McDaniel managed to persuade him to attend the premiere).
Unfortunately the Oscars weren't much better, McDaniel was allowed to attend but she was forced to sit on a separate table at the back of the room with her escort.
Class act. Hard to follow
They should have made Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith sit in the Janitor's Closet.
He also said if they had separate bathrooms he would leave the studio 🎙️ and the movie 🎥 and boycott everything else at least he had some"pull" in the studio
It was not the Oscars it was the gone with the wind premiere in Atlanta where she wasn't allowed to attend due to Georgia segregation laws
12:59 damn, that was a beautiful speech
Agreed!
Can I say that I have shed some tears when Hattie started talking! My god she was so wonderful in that movie that eveytime she appeared I paid extra attention to what she had to say. The way she said things in that role was so engaging and beautifully acted! One more thing, Vivien is probably the classiest woman I have ever seen, and it is so refreshing to hear her speak with her normal accent.
Yes, she's so wonderful and so very, very black.
*That speech was WRITTEN IN ADVANCE for her by Whites and for Whites and the words themselves are all but 'groveling with apology' for winning an Oscar*
____________
*You got one thing right...she was 'acting' on the stage*
Oh, boy! Vivien was so fascinating
"...a credit to my race..." broke my heart.
Well deserved award for Hattie. Very emotional.
She WAS a credit to her race - the HUMAN race!
Me too. What an awesome actress!
She was dissed by the Black community for her role as they thought it was demeaning but she said 'I would rather act the part of a maid and be paid well, than be one in real life'. She meant well by her comments and to find fault with her words is simply another diss IMO.
@@dorothyyoung8231 Bravo!!!
Olivia de Havilland last living actress оn Oscar 1939...
I believe she's now 103. Wonderful! I loved her in "The Adventures of Robin Hood."
@@musket-hc1fc check out Hold Back the Dawn
She just left us today at 104...this is too hard...such a beautiful and classy lady!
The babies and toddlers that played in Gone with the wind are still alive, I think 3 or 4 are still alive, in their 80s
I could look at Vivien Leigh all day long..!
coolsdon Hell yeah!
I also!!!
@@meandwhosearmy5680 very
some women from that time were fucking beautiful
She sure had a camera presence...amazing that she could sound so like a Southern belle in GWTW even though she was a Brit...
How could Clark Gable NOT win the oscar in 1939? He was tremendous in that role for the many complicated and emotional scenes that he had to play.
He played the same character most of his life. He was really good at it but you can cut and paste all his characters into Rhett. R Donat started the movie as a 24 years old and finished it as an 84 years old. Slightly more challenging. Even Olivier liked him....
Robert Donat was better x
wow vivien was not only breath taking but sooo intelligent dannnnng
The most beautiful Woman
A real hot bitch off stage. Ask Larry O. He could not handle her - nobody could.
Clark Gable deserved an oscar too
@@paolovelasquez567 The King of Hollywood deserved it, but i bet he couldnt care less 👍
@@fluorosco Oh no he cared all right.
If you were a film at the 1939 Oscars and going up against "The Wizard of Oz" and "Gone With The Wind" you did not stand a chance
Two Greats that deserve so much glory and praise
And was directed by victor fleming . Fleming Work On The Wizard Of Oz But Then He Work In Gone With The Wind when they fired Cukor , So Fleming Was Replaced By King Vidor .
But have you seen “Goodbye, Mr. Chips”? I was a little surprised that Stewart and Gable didn’t win. However, I now understand why Donat won that year. It’s a well written movie and he did a fantastic job.
Bette Davis said it well lol
The year of 1939 is actually widely considered to have been the best ever in movies. Apart from Gone With The Wind and The Wizard Of Oz, there was Ninotchka, Goodbye Mr.Chips, Wuthering Heights, The Women, Mr.Smith Goes To Washington, Stagecoach, Of Mice and Men and many others. Then there's 1946, generally thought of as the second best year in movies.
Vivian Leigh is GORGEOUS
I agree Vivien Leigh more than gorgeous
Ella en grado superlativo siempre.
1939, greatest year in Hollywood history. Unbelievable movies. Check out some of the great movies that didn't even make the nominations - some of the greatest movies ever made.
The 1939 Academy Awards had many historic and memorable moments. The movies and actors are still mentioned today. The Wizard of Oz, Gone With the Wind and Mr. Smith Goes To Washington are still icons. While not as popular, Goodbye, Mr. Chips was a very touching movie. The performances by Hattie McDaniel, Bettye Davis, R. Stewart, Mr. Donat and Clark Gable were superb.
Yes, 1939 was such an excellent year for Hollywood that even lesser-known films from that year are great. Besides the well-known movies from 1939 like Gone with the Wind, Wizard of Oz, Ninotchka, and Stagecoach, I also like Beau Geste, The Real Glory, The Little Princess, and Golden Boy.
I love Vivien Leigh! She's so talented and well spoken!
Y su belleza física legendaria 💖💖💖
There will never be another year of such tremendous acting talent as 1939. Just incredible ! Olivier vs Gable ..wow
Olivier vs Gable and neither of them won😂😂
Clark Gable vs Laurence Olivier vs James Stewart!
And the magnificent Robert Donat deservedly won, a better actor than Gable & Olivier x
My great great grandmother presented Hattie that award and I’m proud of her
Your great great grandmother was a very fine actress herself!!!
Wow that is fantastic …..what a great honor and you have that ancestry knowledge ……how wonderful…….
I saw Donat's performance in Goodbye, Mr Chips. He was phenomenal and deserved that award.
When stars where stars
Wonderful little film!
If I'm not mistaken the close-ups were refilmed with better lighting, hence the acceptance speeches of Vivian Leigh and Hattie Mcdaniel are actually recreations of their live speeches, and beautifully done!
One of the greatest years for Hollywood, and worthy tribute to the people in the industry, as well as, the iconic films it produced along with unforgettable actors of that time. Truly magical.
These were the days when The Academy Awards or ""The Oscars "" were done with Class and Elegance!!!😊🙏
Best year in film history!
No. The 1994 the best.
This is beautiful. Love these videos. Thank you
Fascinating, 1939 a great year for films and compounded by the fact that Wuthering heights a masterpiece in its own right was barely mentioned. Great to see true superstars of the day being honest and quite humble.
Stars back then were dressed and poised elegantly. They had class and style back then.
Amazing :) old is gold .
Fantasticoooooooooo!
Lovely! Thank you!🇨🇦👏
that Gable didn't win for GWTW is a tragedy.
Just think UNBELIEVABLE! Who the “H” is that ‘ 🍩 Donut? Never heard of him again! Rip off for sure!
@@Melinda8162 the other actor was also brilliant, but Gable was Rhet. actually Margret Mitchell wrote GWTW picturing him as Rhet.
Come on i love Clark Gable but he always played himself. It what not exactly a challenge for him. Robert Donat at least started the movie as a 20 years old and finished it as an 84 years old.
I got goosebumps seeing Hattie Mac Daniel break the race barrier
Man...as of today, February 4, 2020, Olivia de Havilland may be one of the last, if not THE last, living member you see in this Oscars presentation! So weird watching clips knowing nearly all or all the people you see are no longer living today!
She has gone today, just weeks after turning 104...such a sad day in the entertainment industry!
Hattie - class beyond class! Courage beyond courage. ❤️
I like Vivien. Also the opening introduction is terrific
so much classier than now

Little girl: Mommy can I go home now?
Parents: *laughing their ass off*
Those days will never come again. Amazing
Oh, Hattie just made me cry! So beautifully said, so well-deserved! I hope she found peace and satisfaction in life.
Judy Garland winning oscars is like a smile to the heart.
I love Robert Donat and the lady who won supporting actress.
I'm partial to Gable, Leigh, Olivia and Hattie on Gone With The Wind. Belle the character was good too.
So, the actress award was the main event on that night? Which makes sense, no other role been pushed that hard before, during, an after a movie production like Scarlett O'Hara. She really carried the industry the years Gone With The Wind was in development

This was a wonderful Era in Films & Hattie McDaniel certainly made GWTW so enjoyable!
I wish this footage could be colorized to see the colors of the gown that Vivien and Hattie wore.
Its amazing how much better the movies were with inferior technology and special effects.
I hope The Academy upload Miss Greer Garson's full video of her winning Best Actress for Mrs. Miniver especially her longest speech ever . Please The Academy.
There is not enough bandwidth to accommodate that speech.
@@jaengen She went on, didn't she?
Hollywood used to be so glamorous. Its gone downhill so much.
Best year ever for movies.
Olivia de havilland choked in anger and disbelief when Hattie Daniels won over her. 😂😂😂. It was reported at the time that she was so angry that she was crying while in shock 😂😂.
As someone who has seen Gone with the Wind many times, I do believe that Olivia de Havilland objectively had a better performance/role than Hattie McDaniel. Don’t get me wrong, Hattie was definitely one of the best performances in the movie, but just not as important or strong as Havilland’s. So it kind of was a snub.
@@connorpusey5912 I am sure it is also what havilland havilland thought. After all, Hattie's role/performance was never meant to be better than any of the female characters of the movie. Even as a little girl (and unaware of the segregation laws of the time), I could see how Hattie's performance was so striking. I couldn't be unconsciously bias because I was genuinely transported by Hattie's character during the Part 1 and mostly Part 2 of GWTW.
Kristel Mpone
Oh undoubtedly it is striking. I was just saying that I don’t think it’s better than Havilland’s. But definitely one of the best in the film.
Oh please Hattie WAS Mammy. Her performance was miles above Olivia’s.
1939 a great year of movies
WOW just to be in that room with the great stars from one of cinema’s greatest years would be totally overwhelming.
I’ve never seen Goodbye Mr Chips but Robert Donat’s performance must have been beyond incredible for Clark Gable not to win for GWTW.
Back when Oscars were actually intersting
except that the Oscars were not televised until 1953...you hade to go to the theater to watch a movie of it ,like the one we see here
What a year.
Possibly the best ever.
Very rehearsed speech but such a graceful actress like none today
All speeches are rehearsed. You don't really think they just walk up to the mic and wing it??!
It’s because everything was broadcast by radio before television took over. Everything was done so listeners could follow
Cool video
And now you compare this academy awards to today's crime of ceremony. Oonly one oscar award from 1940. is much more worth than 20 oscars today.
Idk who most of these people r but they look rlly elegant and beautiful
Muy lejos de mi época, pero aquella Vivian se nota que fue una excelente actriz, de una belleza inusual y una sorprendete sencillez al mismo tiempo. Maravillosa! 👏😌

Goodbye, Mr. Chips
I LOVED Hattie McDaniel. She certainly deserved the Oscar she won.
The 1930s had some of the best films. Nearly every American adult probably remembers seeing The Wizard of Oz, Walt Disney and Shirley Temple as their first introductions to Hollywood as kids. The Wizard of Oz is the first movie I remember seeing as a kindergartner!
Like watching Mt Rushmore come to life. How do you pick a winner in best actress? Vivien Lee, Greta Garbo, Irene Dunn...shees.
Raffa Tango They clearly didn't know her name dear.
Hattie inolvidable y maravillosa actriz de la legendaria Lo que el viento se llevó👏👏👏

Well deserved Robert Donat ❤️
THE BEST YEAR OF ALL TO READ THE BOOK FIRST AND THEN SEE THE MOVIE. a-WORDS are for the story from one person to hundreds preparing a film adaptation. Honor the author---read the book first.
not GWTTW. the movie is better.
I can't believe that Clark Gable lost the Academy Award for "Gone with the wind". He was absolutely robbed.
Have you seen Goodbye Mr Chips? If you do, you will agree that Robert Donat did deserve the Oscar that year. Clark Gable was good in GWTW but not breathtaking like Vivien Leigh. He didn't even bother to do a southern accent.
@@linguatutors Donat gave a good performance, but, in my opinion, not better than Gable.
@@GiovanniGGori Darling, he played himself!! Easy to do.
@@sedekiman Yeah, he did better in "It happened one night" in my opinion.
I think James Stewart should've won for Mr. Smith Goes to Washington
One question there was no tv at that time then where were such videos used to be shown
Junaid Sajjad at the movie theatre. People would go there to watch the latest news and such mundane events before their movie
I loveee Vivien Leigh and everyone talks about her but Forgot about Hedy Lamar the one that was once called the most beautiful woman in the world and the one who inspired Even Vivien with style
She did not inspire Vivien at all. Vivien and Lamarr were similar and couldn't help look alike, there was no trying to look like Lamarr. It was Joan Bennett who transformed into Hedy Lamarr in 1938, not Vivien.
@@KTR2022 Absolutely right. They were similar in looks but Vivien had the better bone structure.
@@sedekiman I always thought Vivien was more beautiful, she had a feline smile and a beautiful nose and I don't think they were dead ringers or even that similar, they looked a bit alike, that's all. I find Jean Simmons and Elizabeth Taylor much more like Vivien. I think Lamarr comes across as a mannequin, she has a blank look to her that leaves me bored, cold and uninterested despite her beauty . She is so unlike other beautiful actresses like Elizabeth Taylor, Rita Hayworth and Ava Gardner whose faces had so much personality.
Norma Shearer looks stunning at 5.34
she had a fling with Micky Rooney about then.
Mark Allen She wasn’t that attractive. Heard she was a real bitch.
Twelve years earlier, in 1927 the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences was formed.
