David Claus on upgrading his family home's building envelope

  • David Claus and his family have lived in the same Prince George, BC house for nearly two decades. In 2023, the Claus family started work on a massive retrofit. They decided to build an addition onto the house, providing the perfect opportunity to completely upgrade the building envelope of the existing house to high-performance standards and match the addition.
    In this video, David shows the steps that will go into stripping down and rebuilding the envelope with increased insulation.

    Would you say it's cheaper to buy an existing house and doing what you did or building it from scratch?

    We have a cinder block house from the 60s and I've been searching for a way to add insulation. It gets so cold in the winter and with an addition added in the 80s is just a mess of issues.

      Yes many people have blocks. There is hope, I'm making a block fill diy insulation. it's not on market yet.

    Find an areobarrier air seal company and seal when first coat of mud is on and cellulose is terrible, go with blown in fiberglass
