    If you're concerned about compaction, why not cut the sphagnum 1:1 with perlite?

    • @MattMillerFlytrapStore
      @MattMillerFlytrapStore Před 2 lety +3

      We've done that in the past but it seems to make little difference. The plants will still need to be repotted in about a year or so.

    Hello human being. Quick question,does the "long fiber sphagnum moss" are some kind of superior version of typical/normal sphagnum moss? Because I can't find any sphagnum moss that were labelled as "long fiber" on online shop,only find the normal sphagnum moss. Any idea?

    • @FlytrapStore
      @FlytrapStore  Před 3 lety +1

      There are typically 2 forms in which sphagnum moss is available for purchase:
      1) long-fiber sphagnum moss, which is the strands of living sphagnum that are dried
      2) sphagnum peat moss, which is dead sphagnum moss
      Either one will work for growing Venus flytraps. The long-fiber sphagnum moss from New Zealand or Chile is very high quality and usually doesn't need any additives nor washing. Peat moss can be hit or miss. Most of the time it can be fine to use right out of the bag but sometimes it is very high in minerals and can nearly kill flytraps so you'll want to thoroughly wet it and test water runoff from it with a PPM meter before using it. If it is too high in PPM (300 or more) then you'll need to rinse it several times with mineral free water before using it.

    • @FlytrapStore
      @FlytrapStore  Před 3 lety +1

      @@fairuzraz2468 We've never mixed long fiber sphagnum and peat other than putting them in layers to achieve whatever hydration goals we have for the pot. I wouldn't recommend truly mixing them but layering them is fine.

    So what is the best keeping sphagnum Moss in its large form or peat moss?

    • @MattMillerFlytrapStore
      @MattMillerFlytrapStore Před 2 lety +1

      That's really up to the individual grower. We've used both long-fiber sphagnum and peat moss over the years and both work very well.

    Can i mix silica sand and spaghum moss? And if so how do i do it?

    • @MattMillerFlytrapStore
      @MattMillerFlytrapStore Před 2 lety

      Yes, you can mix silica sand with the sphagnum, though we've never found it necessary nor very beneficial for flytraps. For some species of carnivorous plants, like Cephalotus and Heliamphora, it does promote better soil aeration and healthier plants, but flytraps don't really need it. They will grow great in pure long-fiber sphagnum moss.

    Do you prefer sphagnum moss over carnivorous soil? And how have your fly traps been doing after you patted them here?

    • @MattMillerFlytrapStore
      @MattMillerFlytrapStore Před 3 lety +3

      Yes, for Venus flytraps growing in our climate, the long fiber sphagnum moss is superior to the peat-based mixes. The Venus flytraps grow much more quickly and have fewer health problems when growing in the sphagnum moss.

    • @FlytrapStore
      @FlytrapStore  Před 3 lety

      It depends on how well they're cared for an how often they're fed or catch bugs. Flytraps usually take about 1-2 years to reach full maturity in ideal conditions (lots of bugs, big pots, excellent care, etc.)
