  • ZEUS EATS HIS FIRST WIFE METIS
This video is the tale of the Greek God Zeus and his first wife, the Titaness Metis. For a prophecy was told that their offspring would change the fate of the very universe. In an attempt to stop fate, Zeus swallows Metis. But she was already pregnant, and so this tale includes the birth of a famous goddess in the Olympian Pantheon.
Living Mythology is an attempt to entertain, relax and educate all in the one place. We are trying to forge narratives so that people can experience the religions and mythologies of the world as they were meant to be. Not as dry academic monoliths, but as living breathing tales and parables as experienced by the peoples who worshipped these beings, in an attempt to make sense of their own lives and the world around them.
This channel is in its infancy, so we hope to improve and develop it as we gain more experience.
All of the tales are taken from very conflicting traditions across many centuries, so there will be many a moment when decisions need to be made to create a more cohesive narrative. If we present something that seems to be in contrast to details, rest assured we have researched many forms of the traditions and come to the conclusions we have done to form the videos.
There will NEVER be total agreement on any of these narratives due to the history and differing ways they developed over the centuries.
These videos are for entertainment and an easy gateway to the subject. If you wish more academic details then please direct your attention to the wide source material and others who perform those types of academic video essays.

While I fully admire Zeus admitting that he made a mistake and that he was wrong, his actions from here on out slowly start turning him into his father and his grandfather. The way he treats Hera and especially Hephaestus is downright dismissive and cruel. What he does to the Cyclops or their children (depending on what version of the tales you believe) is abhorrent in the extreme. While he never reaches his sire's level of cruelty, Zeus begins to become more and more like them, especially how he interacts with the creations of Prometheus. Part of me always hoped somewhere in the tales that Metis escaped. Her fate was undeserved and tragic. She seemed to genuinely love Zeus, so that betrayal must have stung something fierce. As always, Sir Baldermort and Lady Lightbringer, keep up the absolutely wonderful work. 🤠

You know I had a draft where Metis escaped as a consciousness in the helm - but it doesn't have any backing in the historical texts and we try to be as true as we can, while having a cohesive narrative. But I still think it's a nice idea to think she escaped, and stayed as a guiding voice in her child's helm, (Like jarvis in Iron man haha)
Interesting thoughts on Zeus also! Thank you for watching again, we're happy to hear your thoughts and perspectives!!! Thanks again Zarchriah Mousa! Hope you enjoy the stories to come just as much!

However Zeus sayit Himself that him and Metis became one a.k.a their have Fusion into one being.
Yes Zeus stated he has regret of doing all those cruel thing's but nevertheless he must do what he can do as an King of the gods and to keep continue being a King and hold power and authority over the universe.

Any wonder Gaia turned away from Zeus? She did nto raise up someoen to overthrow him either because he was never as bad as his father or grandfather, she was afraid she would fail... Again and the next in the line would be just another tyrant, both. Or she considered maybe she was makign thigns worse with her constant meddling.
To think, all of this started because she saw Nyx and Erebus and wanted someone who could match and compliment her.

Nice to see Zeus slowly turning into his impulsive asshole self that we all know and (not really) love in the future myths. Also gives great perspective on why Hera is so petty towards Zeus’ flings - he freaking ate his first wife cause he was distracted by something and didn’t really love her. Hera is smart enough to not let it happen to her lol
Also, Athena’s birth story is one of the awesomest and weirdest in any myth, absolutely love it.

I like your version more than the real myth honestly; Metis told Zeus of the child that would be born and bade him to break the cycle by choice, but instincts took hold and he swallowed her whole. She did stretch her essence out, but was forced back not by darkness but an endless storm that crushed inward as a hungry tempest. Metis used all she was to cast ancient spells of creation, forging armor, helm, sword, and shield for her daughter. She gave Athena the wisdom of battle and the tactics within such, but also tactics in life for success and the right path. The last Athena saw of her mother was as a sky of dreams and stars, Metis' last effort to shield the young Athena from the storm of Zeus' stomach. When Athena bashed her spear to her shield and stomped her feet, crying out a war chant to honor her mother's sacrifice Zeus could not stand the chorus of her will and begged for relief by taking axe to his head, just as you spoke of in your telling. When she came forth the last of her form was given to Zeus to free his mind of Chronos' Curse, but her echor fled and reformed elsewhere. This was not the last Zeus or the other Olympians would see of her but never again would the name given by Chronos be used. When the secret of Metis was realized by Zeus he bade her to never reveal the truth to Athena in fear she might betray him, for he was to be her only parent and hold her love as Gaia did for so many. She would find the truth in time with the convenient absence and revival of many goddesses that held the same Echor. Even in these tales ask yourself, who helped the Olympians by different name every time only to vanish at the appearance of another who knew more than was possible, more power than made sense, more keenly aware of events to be placed at the right time and right place? In the tales of the Titanomachy there are 3 names, but there was a 4th who was there to aid Gaia to protect, care, & teach young Zeus while acting as handmaiden for Rhea. She had a name of later years but would be given 2 others in this age. Perhaps you should look towards the mother of the mountain and ask yourself, is destruction justice by virtue or victory under the spell of the bathhouse of the firebird of the bent back? What was it that brought about the madness of Minerva? Why chase such an insignificant lesser goddess to Gaul, only to be impaled by her own spear and be cried upon by a goddess who bade all present to take up vows to honor the fall of Minerva? Such is the tale most of have forgotten, for none wish to see their heroes fall, even those of great beauty and cunning but it is so.

I actually have a tangential thought regarding this story.
In Aeschylus's (extremely misogynistic) play The Oresteia, it gets argued that men are the only thing that matters when it comes to children, and that women are nothing more than "a convenient housing". For "evidence" of this, the play even points to Athena, who is declared to have been "born wholly of Zeus without a mother."
But Athena DOES have a mother! Metis! This story iteslf, which is centuries older than Aeschylus, proves that!
Not really any point to this, I just wanted to express my disappointment regarding this one 2600 year old play, and that it is not only absurd from a biological reality perspective, but from the perspective of its own mythology.
