    I love how he talks to his grandson! Right Boy! And it’s so gentle knowing he might have a ton of them and don’t want to mess them up! I do that to my sons, After I call them each name and then finally I get to the right one!

    I actually know a guy who buys 300lbs of worm casting each year. He tops his beds with 1 1/2"-2 "high of castings all over. He does not have to mulch his beds during the winter, for weed control, moisture control or temp control around the roots. And talk about a beautiful and bountiful garden. And he has no issues with bad insects. He has inspired me to use worm castings, except i have started my own worm farm...man i was surprised at how fast worms will break everything down and how much worm poo in just a weeks time!!!

    Been using home grown worm castings in my garden for 2 years now. One of the biggest reasons I use it is because of the soil life it brings into your garden soil. I even went out and purchased a microscope to see what actually was living within my worm poop. Besides the abundance of bacteria there are protozoa, beneficial nematodes and since I went to natural bedding (shredded leaves, leaf mold and compost) a healthy population of beneficial fungi.
    One thing people should never do is use synthetic fertilizers along with worm castings, not only is it not necessary, but the synthetic fertilizers actually kill the microbes in the soil that ultimately feed our plants.
    Enjoy your videos.

    Great vid Captain! I think the best wisdom from the video is the instruction on letting people know that if they can't afford enough castings, to not spread them thin over the whole thing but to instead use them at the correct ratio on a part of the garden, then compare the garden parts at the end of the season. Thanks!
    Also surprised you don't use Worm Tea liberally on your garden. Maybe you do at later in the growing season?

    I am a vermicompost container gardener that is I vermicompost in containers and plant directly into the bins my worms are in. I have a system of bottles that I use to water the plants and a seperate bottle system that feeds my worms directly into the soil. My problem is how do i get half of the castings out of my bins which have plants in and add new soil? the bins are 18 gal totes with drainage holes that are full of worms and almost pure castings at this point.

    I do have a question. Once you put the worm casting in your garden is it ok to just water out of the water hose? We have city water so it will have chlorine etc in it. Will i be killing off the good stuff from the worm castings by using city water?

    • @CaptainMattsWorms
      @CaptainMattsWorms  Před 10 měsíci

      Not best to use city water - or at least treat before using in garden.

  • @troydunn6228
    @troydunn6228 Před 2 lety

    Do you consider your castings completely organic? I don't know where the line is when feeding worms stuff. Like farm waste that was possible sprayed when growing. Peanut hulls ect..

    • @user-kc7hu4hx6v
      @user-kc7hu4hx6v Před rokem +1

      Once it comes out of the worm's posterior end it is 100% organic. So, even if it was sprayed, as long as it goes through the worm's digestive tract when it comes out it is by definition organic.

  • @jasontaylor9871

    So what would happen if you just dump a bunch of worms in your garden? Do they survive and feed the garden all season? Or would they just destroy the garden?

    • @warrenhoward
      @warrenhoward Před 2 lety

      They definitely will NOT destroy your garden! If you have lots of organic material in your garden bed they will hang around for a while but if the moisture isn't there and you run out of food for them (that's the organic stuff - compost, manures, etc) they will move on to somewhere else.
