  • simple explanation of the Telephone wire color code. How to read and decipher all those different colors you see inside a phone cable.
The Telecom wiring color code is based on a set of 25 colored pairs (50 wires). Each pair is comprise of a Major color (White, Red, Black, Yellow, Violet) and a minor color (Blue, Orange, Green, Brown, Slate).
The minor colors are repeated in groups dominated by the major colors. for instance the first group - WHITE - has a white/blue, white/orange, white/green, white/brown and white/slate.
Then, the same five minor colors repeat with RED - red/blue, red/orange, red/green, etc.

Did telecom for 5 years.. 1A2 was practically phased out. Used to install electronic key systems. Was amazing that these systems had all the features of 1A2 Key systems running on one pair instead of 25 pairs. Almost learned fiber but changed careers. Still miss playing
    Around in the MDFs cabinets..

Great explanation Steve, these color codes have been very handy for me in dealing with my Norstar systems over the last few years.

Thanks Aric. What exactly type rig do you have? I am pretty sure you mentioned a MICS. But anything else? I have been thinking about getting Nortel Guy cranked up again. I don't have that massive lab I used to have (not enough room). But I do still have a BCM50 which doesn't take up much room.
      Always appreciate your comments.😊

Hey Steve, I would definitely like to see the Nortel Guy make a comeback! The BCM50 alone could make some cool videos I think. Do you still have the emetrotel UCX system from a few years ago? Also, I think Avaya has a similar solution to the UCX, for using Norstar sets on their newer IP PBX system. It would be cool to see how they both work, and what features an old Norstar set is capable of on a modern IP PBX.
For my setup I started out with an old 6x16 (that was when I first found your channel), eventually I got an 8x24, and finally got an MICS a few years ago that I'm still using today. I also picked up a cheap BCM200 on a whim a couple years back, with version 3.5 software and a 4x16 card, but I'm kind of sitting on that one for now (maybe someday it can replace the MICS).
I actually just finished upgrading the MICS to 7.1, which I think is the latest Nortel released. Also running a Startalk flash, which I upgraded to 2.1 a couple years ago.

If the orange pair is compromised , can't you just use the blue pair or the brown pair instead?
