Lunge Feeding Blue Whales: Rare Drone Footage of this Spectacular Behavior!

- A drone shot so rare it might as well be a myth: a surface-lunge feeding Blue Whale! Prior to last summer I had never seen a Blue Whale surface lunge feeding on krill. In fact, prior to last year I had never even seen krill on the surface! While this isn’t the first time I’ve filmed this behavior, it IS the first time I can share it with you all here on social media!
With upwards of 100 Blue Whales currently residing in San Diego waters, Erica, Kyle, and I decided to spend the day zooming around the offshore waters of San Diego in hopes of filming something special. We never dreamed that we’d stumble upon a massive area of surface feeding whales nearly 20 miles from shore! Everywhere you looked there was a lunge feeding Fin or Blue Whale!
If you enjoyed this special footage, please like, subscribe, and share!
If you want to see Blue Whales with me in person please visit www.gonewhalewatching.com and book a tour this summer!
Filmed by myself: Domenic Biagini and Kyle Christensen

I don't know how many viewers realize how unbelievably RARE an Opportunity this is, to film a BLUE whale feeding. Excellent video quality too!
Makes me cry, this is so beautiful.
It doesnt happen! Drones have created amazing moments
It's only rare because we didn't have drones before. We'll probably see way more of this.
@@plica06 and because whaling decimated whale populations. Protections have helped but as very large animals living in a very spaced out habitat it has taken a long time for those protections to significantly help the populations.
They are so intelligent. Thank the Lord they are now protected. We share this planet and must protect all life.
I saw a blue whale from a plane once. We took off from LAX and curved out over the ocean. This was about ten years ago. There is no mistaking the silhouette of a blue whale from above. I was so shocked I couldn't even shout out for everyone to look. They are so beautiful. The sight lifted my heart and gave me hope for our troubled planet. I hope many more people will see them.
Great job yelling out the plane for others! I would have been screaming to tell the others! That’s a very busy shipping lane where you saw him or her and incredibly lucky-congrats!
Beautiful!
Maybee yu'd like the STAR TREK movie ... about whales & extraterrestrials
@@saturn722 What does all that have to do with blue whales? I was thinking of the ways we have damaged our environment and driven so many creatures to extinction. That is the troubled planet I was speaking of.
Yeah, you’re right. I removed my comment. Unfortunately the more people there are the more food and planet resources we need. Im pretty sure it’s not as bad as the media makes it sound. In fact just in the last 50+ years man has recognized the importance of conservation and have actually saved many species from extinction. Conservation laws have been in place for many different animals and have prevented their demise.
Life can be very resilient as long as man acts responsibly.
This undeniable beauty is humbling
💙💙
Truth.
Exactly.
That’s the feeling!!! 😌🥹🤗
Just mesmerizing to see these massive animals in their element feeding. You don't realize how big they are. Thank you for letting us watch something that most of us will never see in our lifetime ❤
Simply incredible to see these huge animals coming up for food over and over again! I am so happy that it is possible to get so close to them with the drones. They provide an intimate peek into so many living creatures in the oceans! Thank you so much Domenici and crew and all involved in sharing this with us.
Thank you for the support and following along!
Drones actually being used for incredibly useful purposes! These videos are beautiful!❤
Amazing!
As a kid many years ago, I never imagined I’d see footage like this. Thank you.
Just so amazing how they line up their bodies in direction of the krill 😮 just so lovely to watch....and the music was so fitting 🐳 x
I’m breathless! Stunning photography.
This brought tears to my eyes. How incredible!! Thank you for putting this together and sharing Dom!
Love you Anna!
Me too, almost can't stand how beautiful this is, if that makes sense.
I’m glad I’m not the only one. 😢They are truly magnificent.
@@DolphinDroneDom Ill go with you next time, if you want? I take pictures with a Nikon..not nearly as good as the drone but lovely as well!
One of the most amazing things I’ve ever laid my eyes on.
Speaking of which, I've wondered where the whale's eyes were... a tongue-twister, I realize... although I truly couldn't spot any eyes on them - as I wanted to see whether they looked happy and expressive - but alas, all mouth and no peepers. Are Lunging Blue Whales by any chance blind, or am I? If it is me who's missing something, may I please trouble you to add a time-stamp into a reply, in which the whale's eyes are visible. Thanks.

I was thinking the same thing, didn't see the eyes.
@@martychamplin7793 Ah, a kindred soul😊. I also thought it's ''groovy skin'' looked somewhat plastic and wondered whether it was [partly] AI generated, or enhanced🙄. Thx.

When I was a child I read a book about Blue Whales. Read it 3 times. I thank God they’re not extinct, and I got to see this video.
Absolutely, astoundingly EPIC footage. Seeing and unseeing the orange pockets of krill WOW. Spectacular! 💙🤙🏼
That’s crazy how they turn on their side to get the absolute largest mouth opening possible. Killer footage!
No words to describe how wondrous
and mind blowing this is!
Thanks for the truly beautiful footage.
Wow! I don’t think I’ve seen blue whales lunge feeding before, just humpbacks. Stunning footage! Thanks for sharing 💙💙💙
Glad you enjoyed! It’s super super rare to witness a Blue surface feeding!
that's because there are tens of thousands of humpbacks while only a few dozen or hundred Blue ones.
Indeed, so beautiful, so rare. Thank you for sharing this.
Wow,wow, wow, just plain WOW!. Ty so much for this! So unbelievably large and elegant.
Amazing footage. Blue whales are my favorite whales. They are so graceful & beautiful. Thank you for sharing. 🩷
Mine too.
So beautiful...at age 15, I wanted to study these magnificent beings. At age 65, I am just as amazed by how awesome they are...and that we humans have the pleasure to live side by side. Please let them live, let us humans never harm them (and all their ocean brethren); they can and will outlive homo sapiens! Thank you for this awsome footage.
Awe inspiring even with the inability to comprehend the size of these creatures. Beautiful
I’m a long time scuba diver and have seen a lot of cool stuff underwater…but NOTHING compares to this big-boy…I dream of seeing a blue, please, please please whale gods
I felt a great disturbance in the Force... as if millions of voices suddenly cried out in terror, and were suddenly silenced.
lol
😆
Goofball❤
Cliche af using star wars tropes and the word suddenly consecutively
That might be the most Wholesome video i’ve seen so humbling and inspiring
This is something beautiful and horrible for a person absolutely mystified and scared of the ocean at the same time. I LOVED this
Right!
Spectacular!!!😃 Amazing to watch!! & the music was great too!!! Thank you so much for sharing!!!

What a truly remarkable video, capturing perhaps one of the rarest moments, of the world's largest animal feeding.! Blue Whales are the most magnificent creatures on Earth..Thank you for sharing this incredible footage..🐳☮️❤️
Watching this I was transfixed...mesmerized! I didn't realize how absolutely gorgeous & perfect blue whales are. If I didn't know any better I'd have thought this was like CGI or manipulated somehow because those whales are like...so perfect! The beautiful lines running down from the tip of their mouths & down their bodies, their graceful movements, omg. Also, I know they somehow filter out all that water they take in when feeding like that, but I just couldn't see where it went. This clip was like otherworldly.
Wow. Just wow.
Thank you for sharing this.

This is lovely footage. Really breathtaking.
The title makes it seem like this behavior/manner of feeding is rare. I suspect catching it on film is rare. That said, I did click, and was not disappointed....
To me, one of the most beautiful videos of this Giants. Thank you, for sharing.

Incredibly majestic and beautiful beasts of the sea. Spectacular footage.
Dear Dominic!!
You are Amazing!! Thank you for capturing so much beauty! This is simply incredible!!
It isn't often that I've got a huge smile and tears flowing at the same time. Stunning.
There are no words to adequately express how incredibly beautiful and awe inspiring this brief glimpse is …
One of the best videos EVER!!!
Omg, Omg, thank you for this beyond beautiful footage. I am in AWE.
This is amazing on so many levels. Just to see a Blue Whale feeding is a once in a lifetime thrill. These marvelous videos are only possible with the perfection of drones and tiny cameras with great resolution, people willing to spend the time to find these monsters, and a whole lot of good fortune. Thank you.
It also shows that bait balls are no defence against a Blue Whale.
Music that compliments the magnificence of these ancient, giants of the sea! They are truly awe inspiring. ❤ Thank you!
Incredible footage ❤. Thanks for sharing!
I would love to be able to see the krill they're eating. Beautiful and majestic💙

Stay away and leave the whales to peace in nature. To many noisy tourists disturbing the equilibrium of the oceans let alone pollution.

Amazing pictures. Thanx for posting.
Amazing!
Why are blue whales always looking so clean and pristine? Grey's and humpback's use to have all those parasites and crusts around their mouths and heads, but blue whales don't. Does anybody know the reasons for that?
I was about to ask the same question.
Part of it is the way they deal with predators.
Blue whales and most rorquals tend to flee without fighting back when confronted by predators such as orca so they have a leaner torpedo shape and don't have any body "armor" like callosities and barnacles.
Whereas right and humpback whales tend to fight back so they have a more chunky maneuverable shape and attachments like barnacles. Humpbacks have them on their fins to act like giant knuckledusters.
Great Question!
Better Hygiene
@@hrishikeshnair586I've learned with humpbacks in particular, barnacles have a Symbiotic relationship with the whales.
From the bottom of my heart and the depths of my soul, thank you for this.

Amazing footage. Thank God for the invention of drones.
Whales are so beautiful. Watching that was calming and fascinating at the same time. You can actually see the krill the whales are feeding on in many of the shots, little pink clouds of krill. Probably, actually big clouds of krill.
Incredible privilege to see these amazing sights
BEAUTIFUL!! 🥰

That was so excellent ! Thankyou
The Blue Whale (Sibbaldius musculus) is a large rorqual native everywhere in the ocean, it is known for being the largest animal alive today, it is the only extant species of the genus Sibbaldius, its closest living relative is the Humpback Whale (Megaptera novaeangliae), both belong to the subfamily Megapterinae, which also includes the minke whales (genus Pterobalaena).
Based on the World Register of Marine Species (WORMS) blue whales are actually Balaenoptera musculus (Linnaeus, 1758). Sibbaldius is an out of date naming.
@tursiopsgirl8, nope, the Balaenoptera genus is polyphyletic, the only species of the genus is the Fin Whale (Balaenoptera physalus), all rorquals belong to the family Balaenopteridae but not all rorquals belong to the genus Balaenoptera, only the fin whale does
Based on this classification, all other extant rorquals are now believed to be more closely related to the Humpback Whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) than they are to the Fin Whale (Balaenoptera physalus), for this reason, all these eight other extant rorqual species are relocated to four separate genera, Rudolphius for only the Sei Whale (Rudolphius borealis), Rorqualus for the Omura's Whale (Rorqualus omurai), Rice's Whale (Rorqualus ricei), Bryde's Whale (Rorqualus brydei), and Eden's Whale (Rorqualus edeni), Pterobalaena for the two species of minke whale being the Arctic Minke Whale (Pterobalaena acutorostrata) and the Antarctic Minke Whale (Pterobalaena bonaerensis), and Sibbaldius for only the Blue Whale (Sibbaldius musculus)
Not only there are now six extant genera of rorquals (family Balaenopteridae), there are also in fact three subfamilies of rorquals, Balaenopterinae for only the Fin Whale (Balaenoptera physalus), Rudolphiinae for the Sei Whale (Rudolphius borealis), Omura's Whale (Rorqualus omurai), Rice's Whale (Rorqualus ricei), Bryde's Whale (Rorqualus brydei), and Eden's Whale (Rorqualus edeni), and Megapterinae for the Arctic Minke Whale (Pterobalaena acutorostrata), Antarctic Minke Whale (Pterobalaena bonaerensis), Blue Whale (Sibbaldius musculus), and Humpback Whale (Megaptera novaeangliae), with the subfamilies Rudolphiinae and Megapterinae being sister taxa to the exclusion of Balaenopterinae, thus making the fin whale the most distantly related from all the other extant rorquals.
They're so adorable.
This was fantastic, thanks a million!
Thank you. This is awesome.
Unbelievable & just beautiful! ❤
Majestec; beautiful and awesome in the truest sense. Many thanks.
