    Does one really need to buy the NOCO Quick Charger, to fast charge a depleted pack? Answer: NO! Any USB C charger 65 watts or greater will do. Follow RollingTardis on Rumble rumble.com/user/RollingTardis

    Excellent video. Just purchased this unit and obviously didn't read the manual and would have tried to charge this with a 30 watt PD brick. Getting a 65 watt PD brick right now. Thanks. Keep up the good work, turtle and mock neck!

    Good video! Here are few things that I've learned from measuring dozens of booster packs. These may be useful to viewers about the discrepancy between advertised and measured capacity:
    1) Watt-hours (Wh) is what matters. That's total energy. Amp-hours (Ah) depends on the battery voltage, so it doesn't tell the whole story. I'm glad this video included that information!
    2) Advertised specs are for the battery cells themselves, without any circuitry. It's fine to measure the capacity via USB-C output, but keep in mind that's going through a buck/boost converter which consumes some energy.
    3) Capacity depends on the discharge rate. Fast discharge (higher current) is less efficient, and will result in lower measured capacity. This is less of an issue with Lithium chemistries than Lead Acid, but still an important factor.
    4) Many battery packs and power banks do not charge the battery up to maximum capacity, since that decreases their lifespan. I was just inside a Ryobi 40V pack, with 4.2V max cells, but the charger stops at 4.1V per cell. On the flip side, they will often cut off the discharge early for the same reason.
    5) To truly measure capacity, like the manufactures do, you would need to manually charge each cell to full capacity, then immediately discharge directly from the battery at an extremely slow rate to avoid any heat losses, all the way down the maximum discharge voltage. Doing this repeatedly will limit cycles, but that's how you get the maximum capacity numbers they want to advertise!
    So 23Wh measured via USB-C output at 1 amp for a 31Wh advertised pack is pretty reasonable.

      I used to have a math formula to consider the loss of circuitry, lost it in the mess I have. I like to provide real consumer numbers, instead of drilling controlled lab numbers. Some viewers like it that way.

      @@RollingTardis Oh I agree, the real world numbers are totally useful. I just thought some of your viewers might be interested to learn the details behind why advertised battery capacity doesn't match measured numbers 👍

    Thank you, I tried to charge the same NOCO GBX45 unit (new) with the ANKER Series 737 120W charger (new) but it didn’t fast charge the unit and the light didn’t glow… should the unit be fully dead before charging it!!

    • @RollingTardis
      @RollingTardis  Před rokem +1

      Should not matter on state of charge. Have you tried a different cable? I find that in certain cases, cables do matter. One time, I did notice if fiddling around too much, trying to get the light to glow, the fast charge would not work at all.

      I do not have a 45 watt charger. It may be Noco changed the charge circuitry, to accept lower wattage chargers.
