Well spotted!
Beat me to it! Nice one.
Wow, how did I miss that one.
I remember signing a petition to keep the show on the air, they had it one more season...
Good call indeed. I noticed that :D
“I’m so glad I married you” killer look 😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣
it isnt "married you" its "im so glad i mario" its a horrible horrible pun!!!
The Yank married a bloody bloke! 😂
She’s a Killer Queen!
Just curious what are your ages, how did u guys meet? Tia
Your music has a nice bittersweet quality to it, and it's familiar and comforting as well. It feels like you're near the end of an Amiga platformer, beating up baddies with a copper bar sunset.
I think it's safe to say you're the most wholesome retro couple on CZcams. Educational videos, humorous skits, and puns for days. Who could ask for more?
Thank you for your kind words! Means a lot 👍🕹️
retro or not I think they are are a really awesome couple.
What lovely folks you are!
"Educational videos, humorous skits, and puns " … almost sounds like a Ben Heck advert.
@@captaincrash12 Does he have beautiful women and self-penned music too? 😊
the HX 64 looks like something out of Ridley Scott's Alien
Alien isolation has a similar device, in green phosphors though
I just watched that movie and now CZcams suggested this vid to me. I'm happy to be here but.... coincidence? ;)
Or Space:1999
Yeah, its a really beautiful design.
wow I was thinking that the whole time!!! so cool
Hmmm the Ultimate 64’s FPGA would fit in there quite nicely, if the motherboard was condensed and made to size.... this is truly a gorgeous concept; it’s too bad it’s nothing more than idea at the moment, because that looks great.
That ending though, melts the heart. Happy Birthday Lady Fractic!
She doesn't know that C64 does what Nintendon't.
Anyway hppy brthdi.
This is something REALLY special... I would love something like this to become a reality, it would shake the retro world!
Happy Birthday to LadyFractic, she has a great taste in consoles, and the Switch will bring her lots of good games too.
And also, good project the HX, still really interesting
To be honest, everything about the HX-64 is near old-school perfection. however, the device would be seriously top-heavy, and because of this I would just change the d-pad to a joystick instead limiting the device to a table-top mode. :) And to be honest, that's pretty old school as well; needing a desk (or lap) to play on the machine. :)
10:24 is when it all became a CSI matter, I'm afraid. :V Happy (belated) birthday, Ladyfractic! Thanks for putting up daily with Mr. Punfractic. Gotta love you both ^_^ The C64 HX is something I'd happily put beside my Gameboy, DS, and 3DS.
Since finding this channel a few weeks ago, I find myself wanting to greet people with the phrase, "Hello chip-dippers!" I don't, though. 😁
Lol prolly best not to
The fact its named Executive is reason enough to own one.
I might be the only one who liked the Super Mario Bros. movie as goofy as it was. When your wife asked you about the names of the Mario Bros. it reminded me of the movie. I think my favorite line in the movie was when Mario and Luigi was at the cops station to be put in jail. They were asked what their name was. " - Name?
- Mario.
- Last name?
- Mario.
- Okay, what's your name?
- Luigi.
- Luigi Luigi?
- No, Luigi Mario.
Okay, look! How many Marios are there
between the two of you?
There's three.
There's Mario Mario and Luigi Mario
"
A CRT is a bad idea purely from a power consumption perspective. Portable 5" B&W CRT TVs of the mid to late 90s took whopping 9 D-cell batteries.
I'm afraid you're right. Portable displays are battery guzzlers at the best of times. CRT:s even moreso. Plus, electrostatic buildup, et cetera.
I explored something Like this almost 2 years ago and came to the Same conclusion.
Besides the power consumption, there are no CRTs available that would even fit in a Case Like this.
And even If, they really expensive and really hard to get.
Edit: Just this week i looked up using old electrostatic tubes for this exact same purpose.
You can put together a circuit that can put out composite video on these green phosphor tubes but the resolution is bad on these.
My first tests is ran with a 4 inch color CRT out of a old portable mini TV, in color mode the resolution is not feasible for text.
I really do not want to rain on the parade and by all accounts i may be completely wrong, but i came to the conclusion that it is not a good design choice.
Buuuuuut. You can get old flat CRT tubes from intercom system, those you might be able to put into this form factor.
But to my knowledge these are only available in BW and distort the picture.
@@whoho1 I was wondering how a CRT with such small depth was possible or even where it came from. I imagine it'd be easier just to use a 4:3 LCD and put a magnified plastic/glass lens in front of it to simulate the image curvature of a CRT. Reduces power usage too.
@@n.h.s.a.d.m. On the top of my head, i can think of two commercial products with a flat electrostatic tube. Ask google for "Handheld TV crt" and you will get some results.
These flat tubes are really fascinating, look up the "Unique Flat-Screen Display Put To Use In CRT Game Boy"
@@whoho1 I wonder if you could combine those side-firing CRTs from the Sony/Sinclair pocket tvs with that funky LCCS CRT/LCD hybrid tech for color. You'd still be pressed trying to fit a cart slot under it like in the concept.
If I were in charge, the only change I'd make is replace the membrane board with small scissor switches so you'd really enjoy writing in BASIC on this
That look's like an authentic CBM product.
So, When can we Pre-Order 2 of them on Kickstarter ?
Every day you need to take a minuet to stop and appreciate how great your life is, 10/10 wife, 10/10 dog you obviously have a hobby that you partake in that you love. Everything in your life is so stable and nice. You don’t know how good you really have it man. . . . . . .
Thank you. I do take that minute. 🤎
We could try a DIY version, starting to 3D print the case and see what we could fit inside...🤔
And happy birthday to LadyFractic, I hope she enjoys the Nintendo Switch.
ya know now i want the model files for the case.....
If anything it would be a neet prop.
The Concept of the HX-64 is great, but unfortunately I don‘t think it can be made real these days. With LCD and SD-Card no problem, but not with a CRT this size and a microdrive. Production of both stopped over ten years ago worldwide, so there‘s no source for these components left.
Yeah a 1 off pet project (no pun intended) could be doable. It will just have to use reclaimed bits like the screen from those old 80's "portable" pcs. Or the keyboard from a speak and spell.
@@thegenerousdegenerate9395 oh you can order everything including the keyboard on a small run / proto via custom pcb and ordering the membrane from a (if your really only doing one) 3d printing house using a multi material inkjet style printer
They can even include the layers for the contact to be resistive. The only hard buy would be the CRT you cant just use one from a vintage rig there loooooong..
Given it's shape you MIGHT be able to use the screen from a sinclair portable tv
but if you want it to fit your going to need to recreate the driver circuitry the original one is to power hungry and a bit on the big side for this project.
if your pressed for cash you could even do the membrane for the keyboard on a FDM using flex and some braining to find a conductive solution that stick to it.
you'll want to avoid the temptation to cut corners tho if you really want it to pop.
Awesome I would love to see that happen, but I think it would have to have an LCD or OLED screen. Happy birthday to ladyfractic
Concepts are always fun to look at. Even more fun is to dream "What if..."
this is awesome! i actually modelled something like this in blender just last week without having seen this. its crazy how similar my design looks, even tho i didnt do it with the commodore, but with a custom theme. his design is way more thought through and realistic tho.
Sunday morning, bowl of porridge, mug of tea, and a new episode of Retro Recipes. Lovely!
I used to have a portable Commodore64 . It had 2 disk drives and small monitor and weighed a ton and You still had to plug it in.
I love this, modern hardware that truly looks retro
LadyFractic looked like Sigourney in that dim light...
Also, just that beige colour alone gave me PTSD, not to mention the design too. :-)
Super Mario’s last name is Mario. His first original name is Rambo. Rambo Mario and Luigi Mario is the original history. Once super Mario was exported to United States, the name was changed to Mario instead of Rambo. Thus they are the Mario brothers but his original name was Rambo.
Well at least that’s what I read a long time ago in an article of the people who produced the game. There is also an obscure version of super Mario 4 based on the original Mario game that includes the option to pick Luigi Mario or Rambo Mario.
Stumbled over this Channel a couple of Days ago. Ur Videos bring back sweet memorys of a time where i been keen-deep in Floppy Disks with my first tries to repair C64 of my best friend. CIA 6526 was gone and i had replaced it. That was start of my career about 35 Years ago. Your Channel is awesome, i love it. And by the way, this Wife is the cutest mixture of Trinity and 7 of 9 i can imagine. U done very well in your profession and this other important thing of life.
Thank you for your kind words. Means a lot! 👍🕹
This project has BEN HECK written all over it! Please invoke him if there's a slight chance of making this a reality. He has unbelievable skills and a known track record in portabilizing and designing devices!
Such an adorable ending ... you two truly are awesome.
❤️
If the HX 64 will be made, it will become a SciFi movie prop for decades.
As someone stated below, looks like an actual "Alien" movie prop.
I wouldn't be shocked if that was the source of inspiration
OMG, take my money. This is the most beautyful recreation of our beloved C64.
I dont know whats more beautiful
Your voice, the lady in the video or the commodore
Why not all 3?! 😊😊😊
@@RetroRecipes Wise man.
I said it before, but dude you landed a beautiful wife.
Exactly
agreed 100%
Whats going on at 1.41 hey?!
If I so much as mention anything to do with Commodore 64s in front of my wife, she'll just roll her eyes and change the subject to something that would involve me leaving the room.
@@mrspikiespike4807 she's playing Mario Kart.
What a great concept! I do think that using a CRT instead of an LCD, and the exclusion of USB access is going too far, but I love the idea overall.
Happy birthday, Lady Fractic!
Loved the shout out to Max headroom (6:46)
okay, these two are just adorable
@6:54 - "Insane in the membrane" - Ha! I loved this joke! :D
You guys are a great couple. Keep the humor and laughs! Great energy.
I recently bought a mobile phone that has a curved OLED display and it reminds me a bit of a CRT display. It has a similar amount of contrast as well, just not the pixels blending into each other. So if not a CRT display, an OLED display curved like a CRT would be really cool. Not that I'm actually expecting that to happen though.
Everyone knows PCB stands Puppies Can Button(mash?)
After seeing this and the Christmas unboxing...I think the Lady is a Nintendo fan
Chippy birthday, Ladyfractic!
The HX-64 looks great, and the numbering reminds me of my Toshiba HX-10 MSX. I'm not sure there's enough depth for the neck of the CRT, but that could easily be adjusted. It does have a very 80's hand-held game look about it too...
And as we all know the C in CBM stands for compact!
There is demand for these custom retro machines. There is big risk in making them, too. This is why the retro 'scene' needs to evolve designs like this over the years to improve it and work out all the bugs and issues. A great design with many games included could sell a lot of units.
This looks like a prototype that Apple created before they came out with the Newton! I would so buy this! Just got a complete Atari 800 with 3 disc drives, 2 cassette players and external keyboard, so I'm going to be busy retrobriting! The cases are so yellow, they are actually a shade of BROWN!
You're so lucky to find an American who gets English humour. You just buzz of each other. It's so nice. And yeah. I would definitely buy a handheld. What a thing of beauty it would be indeed.
I’ve had a portable handheld C64 for years, ever since I installed Vice on my PlayStation Portable (this version is called PSPVice). Works pretty well, too.
Ah but sadly no keyboard. How will you write all your BASIC programs on the move!
It does have an onscreen keyboard that you use by cursoring to the letter you want and hitting the fire button to type it, but yeah......that's kinda slow.
And I forgot to say, happy birthday to Ladyfractic!
OMG! We adopted a stray dog here in Brazil that looks just like Puppy Fractic!
Does she have a defined race or is she an undefined breed like ours?
I'd love to see a Google Photos link to yours. We ran her DNA and she's German Shepherd/Great Pyrenees.
@@RetroRecipes here he is, our little Luke: photos.app.goo.gl/t2MH6Y1fP93xD7h5A
He popped up on our street a couple weeks ago after being run over by a car or motorbike. Now he's all recovered, vaccinated and sleeping next to our bed like a true Jedi.
I'm throwing money at the screen, and nothing is happening.
It worked, see how beautiful they both are ?! x
I know ... it just keeps falling back onto my desk ... no matter how hard I throw the money.
Haha "Insane in the brain, insane in the membrane!"
Happy (belated) birthday Ladyfratic! 🎂
Happy Birthday LadyFractic!!!!! That's a pretty cool concept. As much as I like the C64 I am with LadyFractic on the Switch.
Love the Max Headroom reference...
WOW! This is the most impressive concept of a hardware device I have ever seen so far! If this can be realized I'll buy one from the scratch!! 👍👍👍 BTW your wife has her birthday one day after mine! 😉
Phase 3 model for the Commander X16. A big fpga with 2 ROM sets, 1 for C64 and one for X16.
Best product design in ages!!! Wow what a great concept.
I saw this popup on my phone's news feed this morning, and was wondering if you where going to do a video on it lol!
I think if you take out the tape deck, replace it with an SD/Micro SD card slot to emulate the 1541/1571 drive, give it a C128 mode just because, replace the CRT with an LCD, give it some modern video outputs like HDMI, and composite video with audio for hooking to a proper CRT TV then it might work.
I love that bulky, complicated look to it, like if the game boy was released in the Fallout universe. The PLA•WELL portable entertainment center.
I'd vote an FPGA because, as you said, it isn't emulation. Also, as others have pointed out, a miniature CRT would be expensive and it would eat up batteries quickly. I'd be more in favor of something that could emulate the look of a CRT but would be more efficient in terms of power usage. It looks like an awesome concept and I would totally buy one if it were to ever go into production!
I caught that Max Headroom ref ;)
I love the Perifractic family !
... and happy Bday Lady Perifratic of course...
Another great video! Always makes me smile to see the 64 get some love.
That hx 64 is beautiful love to see a kickstarter on this as a sbc case
Damn shes pretty
Oh yes
I can see why she fell for you with that ASMR voice; and you for she with that chilled out love of retro tech and more! (and of course she's gorgeous) :)
Awesome, I would buy one, but the only way to get games on it is to hook up a 1541 drive, or use a pc to somehow load games onto the mini tapes?
I understand the desire to keep it as close to the OG as possible. But an SD slot hidden behind a removable door would be awesome.
And I see people saying LCD, I don't care if it only gets 45 minutes of battery with the CRT. I absolutely want that over any fancy OLED
Unfortunately the CRT probably couldn't be done like that back then. If you look at a real 5" CRT, you'll find that it uses a full size electron gun assembly, making it pretty damn long, like almost 20cm long. It's ridiculous, the emitter takes up more space than the actual tube. Now sure i've seen side-beamed small CRTs but i doubt they could be done as colour CRTs at all, they have plenty of issues as it is.
If one wanted to manufacture an imitation now however, it's not an issue. You simply make an acrylic lens and bond it on top of a suitable LCD or OLED screen with an OCA film.
Great info thanks! 👍🕹️
Yes, I also think an LCD could make it feasible.
@@RiccardoConturbia Micro LED is going to be the next thing. Can be made super small, incredibly bright and with fantastic contrast, should be possible to make a display curved like a CRT with that technology as well.
@@VectrexForever OLED screens like the Samsung AMOLED can be curved in one direction easily right now, they are available entirely as flexible plastic substrates without glass layers right now. The fundamental problem is, how do you make a connective substrate that is stretchable and doesn't lose connection? Because to make something bendable in one direction, like a cylinder, you can have a layer for connections which isn't subject to any stretching, and you can etch or print the connective wiring for the display elements into that, but if you wanted to make one that is bent in two directions, like a section of a sphere like a classic CRT, how do you want to accomplish that? The display element itself is no longer the issue, just the connective substrate.
@@SianaGearz I made a comment about OLED displays here as well. My new phone has a curved OLED display. At least a simulation of a trinitron display, which bends in only one direction, would be possible haha.
Micro LED is the next thing, even better than OLED and maybe it would be easier to create CRT-like shapes with it. Though if it is produced in a way similar to a sillicon chip, it wouldn't be.
OLED is printable, I wonder if it would be possible to print it on a glass surface that bends in two directions.
These videos always make me smile 🙂
I know it totally misses the point of the video, but Mrs. Fractic has eyebrows so perfect they make me cry.
That was actually the entire hidden point of the video!
4:14 Let's hope you mix drinks as well as you mix your metaphors, Peri. 🤣
Really Cool and interesting Video this handheld looks incredible although the title is a bit "wierd" those Mini Casettes on it are awesome and the icing on the cake.
I love that this concept looks like it might actually be an unreleased model from back in the day. It is absolutely perfect. As for mass production, it would be tough. A real CRT is basically impossible and a high-quality tape mechanism might be too since nobody makes them any more.
The Pi Zero W is a favorite among DIY portable handheld emulator builders because it runs cool and is easy on the battery.
Happy birthday. Oh it's 11 months late, keep it for next month! ♥️
HA!
If I was on your show I'd be Teddy Fractic
I come for the C64 Videos, stay for lady frantic's eyes 😍
That's why she's so frantic
The micro cassette would only be able to run in one direction if the second spool is sitting outside. You'd have to flip the tape around to rewind it and then re-insert it.
I recently made a bartop arcade machine with a raspberry pi3, working on the process of doing a handheld Amiga as that's the computer I first got and grew up with. I actually saw a 3d model of a handheld cd32 that looked really cool, but dont thing it was ever made.
I gather the muted audio at 0:28 went something like this... P: "Whatever. Good idea?" L: "No."
I'm not one to swoon over outdated tech but this thing is bad ass.
Oh and happy birthday LadyFractic!
Happy Birthday LadyFractic ...assuming it's coming up again. I don't Nintendo miss it... LOL
Great video! At first glance I thought that handheld C64 was real! I would love to see a handheld zx spectrum!
I see this in a post on the Facebook Commodore 64/128 group, I am a part of this group and you may have seen a few of my posts and comments.. I have seen some of your posts on the group. I have only been in the group for about 6 months. I do like the look of this machine and think this should become reality.
Shouldn't be a problem to fit the c64dtv fpga mainboard into that, and that you can already hook up much of those items to.
Well I know what is on my Christmas list this year! ... you guessed it, a Nintendo Switch ;)
HX-64 would have been a dream come true in the 80s... now it appears to be almost a reality!
Happy belated birthday Lady F!
This looks like something out of Alien Isolation. They share that same aesthetic.
I'd love to see modern devices embracing the more tactile design and ruggedness aspects or retro equipment, to get some variations beyond the same copy paste minimalism that everything is obsessed with the last 15~20 years
I wonder how thick it would end up being if the mother board was original but folded in half with a ribbon cable in between? I personally think the inbuilt tape player is a waste of space as long as the batteries are strong enough to support an external tape deck. Lastly the membrane keyboard would be a massive pain to use but if the unit was small enough to hold up with both hands it wouldn't be that bad. The main problem would be the weight though. Whatever the solution, I don't think it would be light enough to be able to use it for longer than a minute or two especially while typing on the membrane keyboard while holding the unit in the air. What do you guys think?
lol Happy birthday, LadyFractic.
HX64 looks like a good concept.

I just noticed that Lady Fractic has Star Trek side burns. Awesome! :D
I had c64 emulator running on my Nokia 6680 back in 2005. Used to play Bubble Bobble with it. It was a Symbian port of the Amiga Frodo emulator.
The hitchhikers guide to the galaxy would be dreamy on built upon this platform
What a fabulous gadget, I want one, do you think if I'm a good boy Santa will bring me one....Pleeeeeeze...Also a very happy birthday to your gorgeous lady x
Ladyfractic definitely has some nice handholds of her own. Oops... i mean handbelds! Quite what the young and beautiful Lady F sees in someone old enough to have owned a C64 in his youth, I've no idea. 😉 Only joking, great video as usual, hope she enjoyed her birthday.
😍😭 the ending
Great concept, but the micro tape drive is going to be a problem. I do not think there are made anymore and the complexity of rolling your own would dwarf the complexity of the rest of the product.
FPGA -- Check..
Port/Slot compatibility -- Check..
Video out -- Check..
I would like to have the option to attack a modern keyboard and store memorydumps and files to SD.
Happy Birthday, Ladyfractic!
I would totally buy one of those protbale C64s. Even if the battery-life with a real CRT would be around 5 minutes. :-D
Or you'd wear a big, fat battery belt for it. Chewbacca or Batman style.
That's why I thought curving an OLED panel to resemble a Trinitron CRT would make for a nice compromise.
