In the late 1980s, Anthony Swofford (Jake Gyllenhaal) enlists as a Marine, training in boot camp under a sadistic drill instructor. Swofford undertakes a sniper course headed by Staff Sgt. Sykes (Jamie Foxx) during this time, which is shortly before the advent of the Gulf War. When the United States becomes involved, Swofford is shipped out, along with his spotter, Alan Troy (Peter Sarsgaard). "Sir! I got lost on the way to college, sir!"
Lmfao! That line always cracks me up.
It's actually a pretty tragic line with a lot of layers to it because of how the US military recruits. Many of these recruits can't afford to go to college and they get lured in by the promise of a free college education and a lifestyle where they can better their quality of life. Many recruits don't realize what joining the military entails.
@@Valiere2024 They do now, with some of the highest suicide rates for both enlisted and officers recorded. Sad times.
Its true sadly
@@Valiere2024I’d honestly would rather go into the military than college.

The sad reality is that I and many veterans wanted something better than what was ahead of us. The military was our only option to attain the life we foresought for ourselves and we are better off for it in plenty of ways, but on the other side of that token, we're worse off as well.
It's hard to come back to regular life when the world you know is a distant memory.
can’t imagine how hard it is to play a drill instructor and not copy R Lee Ermey’s performance in Full Metal Jacket
Considering Full Metal Jacket came out in 1987 and this scene takes place in '89 wouldn't be suprised if many drill sergeants around the time watched it
The reason why Ermey's performance was so great was because it was extremely accurate.
@@brianbird3756 Also, Ermey was a drill instructor in Vietnam! He lived it!
@@tysonthomas7094 that would be why it was extremely accurate...
Well. Gunny was a drill instructor, It'd be difficult for anyone to emulate a DI without doing so. lol
Fantastic acting quality here. You can see how irate he was at himself for making the decision to join the Marines at an impulse.
not at all fantastic, but still decent writing and acting
He could've dropped out. Joining the military is usually a mistake.
1:30 that recruit laughing in the background is lucky he's behind the drill instructor!
nah, depends on the drill
Usually, there will be other drill instructors watching the rest.
good eye
yep, this is the marines.
I saw it too and it makes me want to try not to laugh because being in the marines is not joke.
drill sergeant looks fabulous in his uniform
I have to think that Swofford used the word "fabulous" -- the gayest word in the English language -- as a subtle way of busting the DI's balls. Another bad decision on Swofford's part.
I'll bear that in mind when my son tells me I look fabulous when I dress up nicely.
1:22 His ever so slight hesitation to admit he has a girlfriend but does it anyways to be honest knowing he’s gonna get torn apart for it is such good acting.
You know it’s a good war movie when it’s considered pro war by anti war people and anti war by pro war people
well i´m an anti war person seing this as an anti war movie. guess this make me an un-American
I thought the movie was confirmed to be anti-war.
@@rivera229
I mean the movie isn’t pro or anti anything in my opinion it just tells the story of how active duty service really is.
My favorite war movie, platoon is 2
movies aren't made to be prowar. but i'd definitely say that this movie managed to be better at being antiwar than others. there's no glory in this movie. there's no humor. there's only depression and trauma. take this movie versus full metal jacket. there is a ton of humor in that movie and ended up ironically being a recruitment tool for the marines despite the fact it was trying desperately to be antiwar.
2:18-2:30 To be fair, that DI makes a good point...you NEED to focus in combat and not let "love taps" distract you from your mission
Except for the physical abuse part, he’s right
"You are no longer black, or brown, or yellow, or red, you are now green!"

Only one other movie gets this close to Marine Corps. boot camp. Full metal jacket, but to be fair, R.Lee Ermey was an actual Drill Instructor.
This movie is nothing like actual boot camp lol
Doesn't stop tons of civvies from thinking it does tho
Incredible Jake Gyllenhaal, Chris Cooper, and Jamie Foxx war flick.
All three played Spiderman villains! 😅
I think this is one the greatest scenes in the movie. Drill Instructor Fitch was one mean SOB! But the man has a crazy job, gotta get those men into high gear for they have a new job & tough job to do.
Maybe mean but absolutely right, learning to deal with annoying harassment in a stressful situation is necessary to survive in combat. To try and make it kinder and gentler is setting them up to fail and die.
@@axelmechanical6768 DI Mr. Fitch ain’t no joke! He’s definitely determined to make warriors of his men! You ain’t wrong either though! Great scene!

@@YdoIneedahandle869 yeah no kidding, there’s nothing else you can do while going through this process. It’s a good scene, DI Fitch is tough man.

“Did he have the balls to die there?!” ??? 😭😭

Some people need a few good love taps😂😂😂 cracks me up everytime
Somehow, some producer saw this intense war drama, in which none of the characters (who are all deeply psychologically traumatized by the process of being made into soldiers) ever fire their weapon at an enemy, and said, "I need to make three "sequels" to this where a shooty-shoot action man do a shooty-shoot at sum bad guis".
Must have been the same producers who took over the Rambo franchise after First Blood
I bet they were never even supposed to be sequels so they just slapped the name "Jarhead" into the title so that the movies would get greenlit
I've read numerous books, and heard stories from real soldiers who were deployed into combat, such as in WWII, some of whom were even caught in firefights, that never fired a single round at the enemy. Maybe because they couldn't bring themselves to do it. Maybe because they were more worried about surviving by hiding or running than shooting back. Maybe because they were full deer-in-headlights. Then there were many others who never actually saw true combat even in war zones. That's the real experience of many soldiers. Shoot-em-ups are more macho fantasy. Living a normal life after doing so is even more fantasy.
😂🤣 It was so funny, with the song "Don't worry, be happy" starting after hahahaha !!!! Ahhh, just another day at the office hehehehe
This movie is iconic, in every scene.
Jody was my favorite character. I wish they had more of him.
I wish it was the D.I. Sure he's no R. Lee Ermey, but this guy is massively underrated.
I'd watch a movie starring Jody. That guy has all the fun.

But they still do. Welcome to the marines. Rah!!
It's the "Hollywood" version of the military.
@@PhilMoskowitz
Nah the Hollywood version of Marines is Purple Hearts. This is the most accurate depiction of Marines in media.
I honestly need to ask more military guys how they didn’t laugh in their drill sergeants face all the time, these guys are always portrayed as legitimately hilarious
Because they’d get punched in the throat.
Was never in the military itself but in the UK i was in the cadets forces (a bit like ROTC) and been on many situations like this with in uniform servicemen and you laugh /giggle when you can and try not to make yourself too bait.
Also depends on the severity of the bollocking and whos giving it
Bec when I was in they wouldn't hesitate to put hands on you. Most guys are joining right out of high school and it's such a culture shock. Plus you're always tired. I was always exhausted.
It’s only funny when you finish Boot
They don't do that anymore but that's honestly a good thing
Gotta know how to take a punch and operate under stress.
There are other ways - most of which are far more hazardous to one’s health, e.g. training with live ammunition, real bombs, real grenades - and an OPFOR group that’s trying to kill you for real.

Fullmetal jacket at home:
Movies a great reason on why joining the military is a bad idea
The biggest problem with this is.....the drills are not allowed to touch you let alone physically hurt you. That went away in the early 80s. I was in the Army in the 90s. They couldn't touch us. Except on grenade day. That was the day their lives were at risk. I watched a kid pull the pin and throw the pin. The drill grabbed the grenade, tossed it over the wall, threw the kid to the ground and dove on top of him with his elbows. Broke the kids nose and cracked a rib. And yes that goes for Marines too. I trained with Marines at Fort Knox and they backed up my story for their branch too.

That "guess again mf" about his gf with Jody amuses me every time.
If a drill sergeant did this nowadays, I'm fairly certain he'd be dismissed.
He'd be dishonorably discharged
No. The pussifocation of the U.S. hasn't reached the Marines yet
Most definitely. Touching/assaulting greens is highly restricted now.
@GeoJesse what how are you supposed to teach them then?
They could, but they “couldn’t” when I went to Boot around the same time setting of this film. Guys would go behind closed doors for that one on one instruction. Sometimes guys had blood on them when they came out, but training accidents happen lol. The basic/recruit training that goes on now is a joke, but you can thank liberals for that. It just makes the military weaker.
Whenever I'm feeling down I just tap 2:35 over and over again
Always good for a laugh at that part 😂
Great movie 🇺🇸🪖🎖️
Drill instructor Fitch is definitely the way I remember the DIs at Paris Island, we didn't have any west coast Hollywood DIs like Lee Emery. Drill Instructors weren't friendly or funny like Mr. Emery, they were pure mean green, if you know what I mean!!!! That was to get you ready for the hell of war, man!!! 😩

So funny its real! Love taps...
Jake gyllenhal in this film was great this film itself was decent would rate it 7.5/10 and I think the drill sergeant was a little harsh
If you think that the drill sergeant was harsh, You need to see my uncle then, Full Metal Jacket is the most accurate portrayal of a Drill Sergeant and Jarhead is tame compared to real life.
@@SAVANTI711 alright I will take a look
You thought that was harsh?? It’s even softer now.. 30 years and more back… DI’s can’t do half of what they used to do
I did say a Little harsh I am Very very particular with my words I didnt say it was harsh I said it was a LITTLE harsh and that says a Lot
I know right. I was expecting more ice cream parties and lullabies.
I had a childhood friend whos brother joined the marines. He was a pretty big guy. He got in a fight with his drill seargent and beat him up. I think they kicked him out.
he was fit and able enough to beat up his drill sergeant? I dont care who is in the wrong but a drill sergeant should be able to hold his own against a recruit, just embarrassing
@@InitialPC Well, a large part of the drill instructor’s power comes from fear. When someone isn’t afraid anymore, that power is gone.
@@InitialPC drill Sgt’s arnt required to be good at fighting,
they teach discipline and basic soldier tasks, typically only one or two drill Sgt’s are versed in hand to hand combat and they would teach the hand to hand portion of training
That’s being said I wouldn’t be super surprised if op’s friend was “hyperbolic” in his re telling of the story, as the military won’t comment on why people were discharged outside of the actual discharge paperwork
Basically you can lie about why you were kicked out and no one will correct the record
Even employers can only ask if you discharge was honorable or dishonorable, not the exact reason
@@arkcantoscreampsnpc7274 your comment makes me laugh
"these SOLDIERS are not supposed to be good at fighting! theyre just for discipline!"
have fun trying to discipline someone who can ring your head like a bell
@@InitialPC have fun trying to get close enough to punch a soldier….. there’s a reason hand to hand has almost left military training. Guns.
You don’t need to be good at hand to hand if they can’t get close enough to start it
They only hand to hand training I received was how to make someone let go of you gun so you can shoot them. Which is only useful if you let them get close enough to grab your gun… which shouldn’t happen

When D.I. asked if his father died in Nam, should have said that he didn't have permission to die.
Marines are not allowed to die without permission!
The peak atheism and vocal delivery of drill instructors always amazed me.
And the creativity!

A recruit should never be touched, you can yell, give punishment etc.. but cross a line when you start hitting them.
