Enhance X-Plane 12 scenery for free with X-Europe

- A more detailed look at how X-Europe changes the autogen in the sim. We'll look specifically into one neighbourhood and compare between XP12 default scenery, X-europe and X-Europe combined with Ortho4XP tiles.

IMHO I’m not bothering with scenery enhancements any more. I had developed an enormous custom scenery folder in XP11 and if I were to consider and calculate the time I spent on all of it I’m sure I’d be blown away with the amount of time spent. I’m pretty pleased with the stock XP12 airports and their global airports will always be improved over time without me doing it. Laminar have said they will be working hard on their sceneries after xp12 goes official so I’m not going the waste my time when they would be doing it anyway.

IT BLEW MY MIND! I'm Hungarian, a small, maybe not too significant country (sry for saying), so I was sure, that the open-street-map data would be poor. And darn! EVERYTHING is in place! Same thing! All the houses! Malls! Supermarkets! Gas stations! Even the brand of the gas stations are correct many times! Churches! Every single tree in place!... Okay, that's an exaggeration, :D but the tree lines are like in MSFS! And because I use LV17-18 ortho, my scenes, I claim, look better than MSFS ground textures. (Cost: -10 fps for me.) NOW, I REALLY don't know if I ever run MSFS again. :) But X-Plane! EVERY DAY, no doubt! :))) THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS VIDEO AGAIN, I'M EXTREMELY GRATEFUL TO YOU! :)

Great free alternative. Nice to see the mods emerging for XP12.
I like Orbx TrueEarth which looks utterly stunning in XP12, even though it is not yet optimised for, or takes advantage of the new features in XP12, but that is coming. Payware, of course, but so worth it.
Yeah the True Earth regions rock! But for the other regions in the sim X-Europe combined with Ortho is a great alternative.
The sim heaven packages in xp 11 have some subtle pbr that really makes a difference, especially at golden hour. I’m downloading x-world America now so I’ll report later but when I carried my xp11 version into xp12 I also noticed some nice pbr at certain light situations
I've just posted a video using X-Plane 11 Orbx in X-Plane 12 from London City. The wet airport looks amazing as does the very overcast clouds. It flies much smoother and seems faster for the same speeds. I used the X-Plane 12 X-Europe too

Ha die Sjoerd. Zag ik nou in het begin 1 van mijn oude leskisten staan? ;-) Leuke presentatie ! Zelf blijf ik voorlopig bij XP11 met daarop ook X-Europe en Ortho… In VR en werkt prima. Meestal vlieg ik in XP11 met IFR in de Zibo 738, naar alle tevredenheid. En gebruik ik MSFS2020 voor VFR met de Cessna 152, 172 of soms de Twin Otter. Groetjes van een ex-KLM Aeroclubman.

Many thanks for this very interesting video. I'm still on XP11 for now, and have been using X-Europe for a long time, and completetly agree with your comments. That said, I also have tons of orthos, and agree that the combination is excellent in terms of visuals. I will surely move to XP12 when it's at a more advanced stage, but the question regarding the orthos that I'm not quite clear on is whether we will be able to use our previous orthos or if we'll need to rebuild all orthos for optimal XP12 compatibility, do you have some insight into this? Thanks for all your excellent work.
Very welcome! I don’t know much about the Ortho issues. I didn’t have issues with ZL17 tiles in this video, but when I install my other Ortho’s I get an error stating that the X-Europe packages can not be loaded. So right now I can use either Ortho’s or X-Europe, but not both. It’s all open beta right now, so I just wait patiently for a solution.

I have been working on scenery for USA state of Oklahoma and xplane trees are completely wrong, but I did find a tree placement layer for sale and it looks like correct placement. Looks much better than msfs and probably no reason why msfs trees should be absolutely everywhere.
I have 4 TB Orthos for Europe, US and Africa.
Europe: ZL 16-18 (18 for airports where I go very often)
US: ZL 12 (looks ok at FL 350), ZL 16 for some regions
Africa: ZL 12 (looks ok at FL 350), ZL 16 for some regions
X-Europe is really good
I prefer XP with Orthos to MSFS because the flight physics are so much better and BSS soundsets for Toliss/FF are the best soundsets ever.
It's really hard to describe the feeling in xp without just saying "it's better" but you really have to try it for yourself to really see it. You dont really get that loose feeling in msfs, no matter how much airspeed the plane got. You could say it's something to do with inertia or force i guess.
@@gamerdeol2694 In plain words I would say, MSFS planes fly on rails while in XP you can really feel the actual forces being simulated, it is much more dynamic

Is OrbX available for XP12? In the old simming days I remember always having OrbX installed (but I don´t know if it was for prepar3D, FSX or X-Plane) and for example the UK-scenery looked absolute beautyful! Almost like FS2020. That´s why I think OrbX would be the best scenery to go for X-Plane. :)
Not yet. They have to make it compatible for XP12.
So I can still fly with Xplane without internet, and with MFSM I can no longer fly if the internet is too slow or fails?
Can i install xplane 12 twice on the same computer? Once under Windows and once under Linux?
With ortho and xeurope installed, the plausible world would be quite perfect if only it was possible to set the roof- and facade-colour....
And even more so if You could set the type of house, in this instance, at terraced one, and height if multi-storey house, and numbers of doors and windows in blocks....
It may sound like a lot, but it COULD be done quite easily, and very quickly, everybody would be sitting fixing their area, and things that are not edited, can be interpolated....
Yeah it would be awesome! I don’t know if there are fields in OSM to enter the colour of roof and brick, but for us simmers that would be awesome indeed!
The manual says something about not having to copy over ortho overlays for Europe tiles, do i need it for the rest of the world? how does it work
If you install a X World region you don’t need overlays for that region.

Er zijn heel veel goede tutorials te vinden over Ortho4XP. Je kan beter zo'n tutorial kijken, dat is veel makkelijker dan dat ik het hier in tekst moet gaan uitleggen. :)

I wonder why you choose EHAM; there is an extreme frameloss in the environment due to elevation.
As mentioned in the video: I’m familiar in the area. That makes the comparison with reality a lot easier.
Mfs take 120 gb on my hard drive, xplane 12 110 gb…so i dont get the point where you said it s much smaller
The 110GB from Xplane has the entire default world scenery in it. If you wanted to download all of MSFS scenery you’d be looking at many terrabytes of Hard disk space required. Since that is not achievable for most simmers Microsoft host that scenery on their servers and you download the scenery that you are flying over. That makes you dependent on MS keeping their servers online.

My opinion is that from the height shown here and above, photogrammetry looks way better. As every building is just like the real one. I agree that from closeby it looks apocalyptic but it’s a flight sim, to be enjoyed from the skies, not the sewers ;)
The excuses and denial Xplane fans display nowadays is quite entertaining😆 Now let's tell it how it is: it looks like a playstation game from 2003.

@@Eastbirds_Lee Now change the seasons to fall or winter in MS FS. Notice any differences? I will always prefer synthetic scenery above satellite pictures for most of the world. Photo scenery is nice for airport or POI details but 99% of scenery wil never be looked at in detail. Far better for scenery to give a good general impression with accurate weather and season effects.
I get your point and i agree to some extent. I notice that in MSFS I don’t mind at all the AI buildings when seen from above, superimposed on the Bing Maps data. Looks very satisfying. But when I’m on approach or departure i enjoy photogrammetry data. It’s true MSFS lacks seasonal changes in trees and plants. For that i could recommend installing REX Accuseason as addon.

@@_sierra_kilo Well, at this point XP12 would not be my choice point if MSFS after latest sim update I get 45-60 fps at 4k on ultra settings with scenery that looks much better than this and using latest addons like PMDG or Fenix. Other option is to stay with XP11.
@@activex7327 X-Plane 12 has a wider choice of aircraft for now. Something avid flight simmers would like.
@@_sierra_kilo Not really, there were only few official releases of XP12 aircraft and these were copy/paste from XP11.
MSFS should surpass XP at the end of this year in terms of aircrafts.
X-Plane 12 is still in early beta. There's a lot of optimizing left to be done.
Just buy msfs it’s cheaper than spending hundreds to make xplane look half as good as msfs and the planes are better in msfs to idk how people still play this junk
two words. "Flight model" . I was a MSFS only guy just a month back but i have recently gave Xplane 12 a go and i was pleasantly surprised with the graphics. Once you get autoortho and simheaven (both freeware scenery btw) the graphics are good. Yes, still not as good as MSFS but good enough for me. I have been flying xplane more and more now.
