    Ah, the early 60s - Wolverton LMS - and we used to cheer each sighting of the Deltic as it hammered under the Blue Bridge in the distance - good to see it moving again.

    I remember seeing this prototype 'Deltic'for the 1st time about 1960/61 on the ECML at Newark same time as the D400 class where running along side the steam A4 A1/2/3 & V2 that where sadly being withdrawn over the next 5yrs

    when it was moved from london to york an inspection was carried out on it.
    It was discivered that it contained BOTH power units minus the brushes and traction motors.
    fit those and you have a runner

    The headlamp sockets on DELTIC's bonnets are so American looking.

    I can't think of any other British diesel with headlamp sockets styled like that, but I've known it to be fairly common on American locos.

    I say they finally get that headlamp installed.

    It certainly contained the engines when it was at Kensington; I saw them there. If I remember correctly certain parts are missing from them, and have been since before it arrived at the Museum, in the '60s. The engines in the Prototype are different to those in the production version, but I don't know exactly what the differences are. The sectioned engine at York is not one of the ones from the prototype.

    Hello, As far as I am aware, when she went into preservation she was taken out of mainline service in B.R days when her power unit failed, and they decided it would be too costly to replace the power unit, so it was decided to keep her as a static item , The original blueprints are gone I believe, when Bachmann commissioned their oo scale model, they had to laser scan the full sized machine from head to toe to get the dimensions !, again its all about money and funding .

    @SPECTRUMANALYZER Parts for the Deltic engines are hard to come by and expensive, plus the specs of the engines in 'DELTIC' are different to the production fleet. A pair of Deltic marine engines could be fitted, but they require costly modifications. DELTIC will never run again, but the NRM's production spec Deltic 55002 is now under restoration to mainline condition

    The NMSI have stated in the past that they will not consider returning the machine to operating condition as this would involve making irreversible changes to it, and this is against their policy.

    Engines like the; class 25, the class 43, the class 45, the class 55 and a few others had examples of inset headlamps but I know what you mean, also I'm a bit upset that Hornby doesn't put headlamps on their steam locomotives.

    @SPECTRUMANALYZER i dont see why you would go to the trouble and expense of moving a static loco around. she sits quite safely in the hall in york where people can easily go to see her. if they replaced her power units and made her operational again tho, that would be amazing!

  • @edwardianeccentric
    @edwardianeccentric Před 16 lety

    Sorry but that has to be nothing but a rumour for two reasons:
    1) the NRM would surely know if an engine was or was not in one of its prize Diesel exhibits
    2) one of the engines from the Deltic is on display sectioned next to it.
    Wish it was true though.

  • @vectorm1299
    @vectorm1299 Před 13 lety

    @SPECTRUMANALYZER Well theres NO engine at all in Deltic, the traction motors are in ppor condition, parts for a production deltic let alone the prototype are hard to come by and expensive, and some parts need to made new.
    So from NRMs view is an expensive waste when u have mainline deltics atm.
    Better off from a novelty poiht of view of putting the APT-E back on the mainline.

    is that the one they had in the science museum?

  • @tpvalley

    Thats because they built it with the possibility of an american tour in mind, like the royal scot did.

    @Lukeashley2323 it's fake - but buy the deltic videos (probs on dvd now), the first one has some amazing footage of dp1 around vulcan foundry!

    Well I'm an American, and it prevents me from running my UK locomotives at night. it annoys me... royally! XD

  • @Meldforever

    Don't think there was anything inside anyway....unfortunately it's been engineless for most of it's preserved life AFAIK.....That said it must be stuffed full of ballast to get it to gauge for movement.
