The contradiction is in the fact that he was also the man who invented the way to synthesize ammonia, which is used in fertilizers, through process that is still used today, which feeds half of world's population today. So, his invention saved the lives of billions of people, because our planet cannot naturally support this many people on Earth. At the same time, he invented chemical warfare too and had no remorse about it. Was he a sinner or a saint, a monster or a saviour? Great topic for discussion and another amazing song by Sabaton

It's estimated that about 1.5 million people were either killed or at least seriously wounded or maimed for life by the chemicals he invented. But also billions of people are alive today because of it as well. So it's kind of the train track scenario. If a train is going towards five people in one track and there's one person on another and you have the power to switch the direction of the train would you do it? I know it doesn't exactly correlate but it's how I think of it in my head. There's a lot of gray in this world not everything is black and white. Haber in my opinion is neither a sinner or a saint. He was a brilliant scientist that did a lot of good for this world but he also did a lot of really bad things as well. Does the good outweigh the bad? I'd like to think so but maybe not.

"So, his invention saved the lives of billions of people, because our planet cannot naturally support this many people on Earth." Weeell, yes but no. it's more like: without the Haber-Bosch technique some odd billions of people wouldn't be able to be born, as you cant save that which doesnt exist. most generations of younger people today owe Haber their lives.

he killed millions, but saved billions.
what weighs more, that's the contradiction here.

"During peace time a scientist belongs to the World, but during war time he belongs to his country."
    Fritz Haber

  • @jean-francoispirenne6518

Haber was one of the many fathers of chemical warfare. All countries were searching for this item, the Germans were faster. Just for information, the French were the first ones to test gas in 1914. The test was a failure, as they had used tear gas.

You should watch the sabaton history channel to this song. It is a very contradicting story difficult good and very bad. A topic to discuss science were it can lead to.

Sabaton was always the name I used while playing Kahoot in school.

Well, the chemicals also fed millions of people, because it produced better crops at a time when crops were failing.
But at the same time, the same chemicals killed and wounded thousands of soldiers in war.
So one can speculate whether it was a great invention or a horrible one. Either way, fertilizers is still being used today. Gas not.
Also, I dont think u are wrong about needing Sabaton in schools. Because lsitening to the songs might make more students want to learn about the event and the wars.
But to say we learn more fro mthe songs than we do from text books is a bit of a stretch. But the songs awake the interest to learn, for sure.

Correction, its not specifically the same chemical which is ammonia that is used for fertilizer that killed the soldiers in the form of gas, rather used as an alternative for explosive. The poison gas made by haber were mainly chlorine

"civilized" Europeans gave out the Nobel Prize for the creation of such weapons, instead of immediately declaring a ban on the development of such weapons. Although who cared? The United States dropped nuclear bombs on peaceful cities and even no one from the democracies bothered to recognize it as an act of genocide and a war crime:(The USA wanted to intimidate the Russians, but it works differently for us) the Germans will not let you lie when they tried to intimidate civilians, and they massively went into resistance.
It is also disappointing that the United States itself has not destroyed its stocks of chemical and bacteriological weapons :(((

he didnt win the nobel prize for the weapon but for inventing a way to feed billions of people. this what the song is about the maths: billions fed vs millions killed, the contradiction
