Bought my daughter a sewing machine for Christmas. Was afraid to take it out of the box. I'm feeling much more confident now. 😊
Just wanted to say a big thanks! 52 year old male... never sewed a day on my life... finally bit the bullet and started learning, with this video. Made my first napkin tonight and couldn't be prouder. There's going to be lots more of those to come! Thanks again for the great instructional video.
If I woke up tomorrow with my head sewn to the carpet, I wouldn't be more surprised than I am now.
+Smug Smugly Well, that was really helpful. Let me guess... You're about 12 years old and immature for your age.

I'm so proud of you!!👏👏👏
Awesome.....keep it up
It’s quarantine and I am learning how to use my moms sowing machine to make masks. 😷 you are a life saver lady. Thank you!
Im learning how to make masks to over this corona its confusing but not at the same time

Me too😊😊
48 year old fella here, just did my first cushion cover after i dug out our old 1950s Brother machine. t-shirt next, i'm hooked. This is what lock down has done to me!
What I love about growing up in this digital age is the ability to learn anything whenever you want. Obviously I can buy a book which I enjoy a lot, but there’s nothing like being able to watch a video or find a course online whenever I want.
Omg. Those heels and socks were adorable. I was taking notes and got distracted. Gotta rewind back. Lol
those shoes wow
@@denisekersey8120 definitely love the shoes. Look like Hot Chocolate brand.
I get distracted by all her tattoos wondering how painful they were all. Those heels also look painful to me. those socks are so cute, yet I would never were them with heels. que sera, sera.
Same lol so adorable!!
I just have to say that I am so enamored with her hair and her overall look. Very pretty. Plus I love how detailed she is with her descriptions. Best beginner video I've found so far. :-)
amber combs agreed!!
The blue hair is the reason cheated out this sewing video. Just seemed right to me. lol
Yeah blue hair is so natural
Absolutely! nShe is hot!
Wanted to type exactly the same thing!
😘
This is the best how-to video I've found. I had ZERO sewing machine experience before watching this. Thanks to this video, I was able to sew some curtains for our pop-up tent trailer just a few days before leaving on a 3500 mile road trip. Thanks so much for a concise and easy to follow video.
How to put the bovine in
I’m a mom and clothes are so expensive especially for my husband so I wanted to learn so we can wear what we want without spending ridiculous amounts of money
Is anyone else obsessing over the dress and skirt in the background, or is it just me?
I know right!..I wonder if she made it or if a student did...I really like them!
kaitlyn chan right there with ya girl!
I like her shoes 👠 and lace socks! It matches her floral shirt!

i love ur name
kaitlyn chan I love it. That whole era. I hope Gretchen teaches us how to see those dresses and zuit suit's! I hope I spelled that right. I love her style of teaching!!
I've watched quite a few beginner sewing guides and this one has really made the most sense, even though I have a different machine. Thank you for explaining why/how the little things are supposed to work not just "do this, do that".
Actually I've already been sewing and didn't realize some of the things on the sewing machine that will now help me better
Good on you :-) I saw this Video and it really helped to just learn the basics of the sewing machine as well. I saw this other video and I got really mixed up at this one bit because she just said: "Turn This Thingamabob" And I was super mixed up by this, but I agree with you. :-)
I absolutely agree with you! She's amazing!

I’m a 12 year old girl and i’m trying to start a business and instead of having someone sew the clothes I designed, I want to sew it myself. I really hope my plan works out and i’m so nervous to start this business.
You can do it!!!
Good luck bestie!
I hope everything is gone well for you!! It’s always a bit scary to start a business, especially so young and something new, but I am so sure that if you keep at it for a long time that you will become very successful ❤️❤️💙💙
Yaa I hope the busnes is going well
Yes! Go for it I wanna become a fashion designer
I want to thank you for taking the fear of learning to sew, for me at 72 years old to start and I will be watching your videos because your videos are easy to understand.
Here I am, 13, homeschooled and bored all of the time ! I thought that I would try to learn as many things as possible before I go into high school!I decided that I would use the old sewing machine that my sister had and learn how to do that ! If I have time to waste I will saw !
I'm 13 and I use cosplay as a way to deal with my mental health so I need to learn something quicker than hand-stitching and I'm happy to see someone else doing it too :)
same, I am 13 and homeschooled, I really want to be able to make some cool clothes and face masks
As many Americans, we find ourselves locked in at home with a lot of idle time. I had purchased a gently used sewing machine about 3 years ago, and my wife “suggested” that it was time to figure out how to use it. I started out by reading the manual, always a good place to start, but am now looking to fill the gaps between the particulars of my machine, and what to do. I love your instruction style, your calm manner, your camera positioning, and a simple project to allow a beginner like me build confidence. I do hope that you have a kitchen curtain video, as that is the project that my wife has charged me with tackling, and it’s actually a bit terrifying. Thanks for showing me how to sew a straight hem...hopefully I can replicate it in due course.
You got it! You'll do great !
Dsuarez410152012 and all other things done on our site so that we will have
Where did you get lightly used mashion pls?
This is hands down the best video for beginners!!!! I have had a sewing machine for years and never had the time to sit down to learn how to use it. This video has me sewing and making a difference during this pandemic! THANK YOU!!!!!
Totally agree with you 😊
My mom taught me how to sew when I was little. I learned on a very old school machine she purchased in the 60’s 😳. Time for me to get back to the basics 😃
good luck!
Thank you for this comprehensive introduction. My great-grandmother was a seamstress for Judy Garland (Dorthy in The Wizard of OZ) but she passed away in 2008, what I wouldn't give to hear her sewing tips. 🥺😭 Thank you for taking the time to make this video.
Wait you mean she made Dorothy's costumes for The Wizard of Oz or she was a seamstress for Judy Garland personally?
@@Fopenplop: She did both on set and off set. I'm not if she made the dress used on film though.
wow, such an honor for your great grandmother! That's so amazing.
WOW. I learned a lot from this. Thank you. I'm nearly 60! It's almost never too late to learn something new.
We agree, never too late to learn something new! We're so excited for you to start sewing.
This was one of the best video ever. I finally learned what I was doing wrong with my bobbin. She is so precise in her teaching. I was wishing the video would never end. Thank you
62 yr old Married Man who has ALWAYS had to hand stitch everything I've ever mended and taught by my Mom (she raised 7 of us on her own!) I recently acquired an older desk sewing machine (Janome Harmony 8080) that did not come with directions or power cord (given to me and didn't know what I was getting when received!). I have since located an aftermarket power cord and downloaded the manual for the machine! I will be coming back to your video to hopefully get me through the beginning stages to start getting my various projects completed!! Thank you in advance!!
My mother passed away three years ago in May and she left me her sewing machine. I knew a few tricks from watching her but this has helped so much in a time where an indoor weekend hobby is needed. Thank you for being detailed about the machine and the sewing process in general ❤️. Btw love your pinup model style 😍 it gives this important trade a lovely vintage flare.
Hello, how are you doing my friend?
Did anyone noticed her matching floral print high heels 👠... I jst love ur style Gretchen...and ths is the best beginners guide..i really dnt even know the abcd of sewing machines bt after watching ths nw i hve understood a little step by step😘😘😘😘
I’d like to see the traditional singer sewing machine... My grandma used to have one and she is such an expert at sewing!!! Watching this makes me miss her a whole lot. 🤎
Thank you a million times!!! I am considering buying my first ever sewing machine. I'm a Granny ''New Bee''...no experience with a machine at all. I felt intimidated so, I just hand sewed everything. Now with this crazy Pandemic I find my hands don't hold onto a needle as well as they used to. Although, I have been getting by and have made quite a few masks, I feel all would be quicker (along with better stitching) if I switched to a machine. Thank you for the info about finding a mentor...never thought of that. I like the way you explained and demonstrated your instructions, your voice was very calming and inspiring. New subscriber!!
Update:
Well it is June 11th...today my sewing machine arrived. I am looking forward to learning how to use it all because, of this video that has been such an inspiration.
Hi, Mandy. I’m a granny too, and aside from poor sewing my freshman year of high school, I did no sewing except a few lessons I took last year. I have 2 experienced seamstresses willing to help me learn. I have a pattern, fabric and thread to make a pillow. I wish us many hours of happy sewing!
Even though I’ve been sewing for 64 years I would recommend your videos to anyone who is interested in the art of sewing I learned by watching my mom when I was 6 and have been sewing ever since you make it very easy for the beginners who are interested in sewing I came across this video by accident but even thought I’ve been doing it for years it was very refreshing love your look your style is beautiful and you have your shot together and I love it keep doing what you’re doing and happy sewing
I’m excited to start learning how to use the sewing machine. 58-year-old male, never Sewed anything before but I’m willing to learn and excited to get started. New subscriber.

Who new a video from 4 years ago would have a quarantined desperate mask maker excited to sew! Beginner here 🙋🏻♀️ the very first video that ACTUALLY explains things we can understand all around! Thank you Gretchen!
Subscribed!! You are awesome!! I just saved myself $45 from going to Joannes' Fabrics and taking that sewing class! Thank you so much! My ten year old even enjoyed watching you and is going to also subscribe from her channel.
In high school I opted to take shop class instead of home ec because I thought I would always have a chance to learn to cook and sew, but when would I have the opportunity to spot weld something? Well, fast forward 30 years and I still have not learned to sew. I found your video, got out the sewing machine that I bought but never had used, and got started. This video is so easy to follow - thanks so much for making this fun! I can't wait to move on to the next video!
I'm 60 years old and you taught me how to sew you have a gift for teaching, after making at least 100 face mask by hand I decided to buy a sewing machine my only problem was I had never used one after reading the user guide and watching the videos associated with the machine I was really frustrated and questioned me trying to learn something new at my age that was until I found your videos now I can sew a face mask in 10 minutes from start to finish. Thank you for helping with my new hobby I can't
wait to learn more.
My mom has a couple of different sewing machines so I took one and randomly decided I would try to use it. Now I’m just using some extra material to learn to see a little cat bed this rlly helped thx!
I just bought my sewing machine today, I have trouble setting it up, after I watched you video, my set up went so smooth now, thank you so much, love to watch your videos, you are such a good teacher, every steps are so clear ❤️
Love the 50's style, she wears it well. She is also a great instructer and if I were needing and looking to learn, this would be my choice.
I'm 17 and I will create my own clothing, this really helped thank you
I’m a ford mechanic and wanted to sew my own patches on and been wanting to learn to use a sewing machine, looks fun, thank you for the beginners tutorial I learned a lot from you!
Has anyone else noticed that pin cushion bracelet! Who knew that was a thing! Amazing tutorial btw.
Yes buddy🤣🤣🤣
Hi ARMY
I have several of those. U cant tailor without them.
YESSSSS, it is awesome!
Thought it was just me. I'm hooked!
I have to pause the video to make this comment. Amazing tutorial! You are a great teacher.
Old retired guy learning to sew. Why not.
Your a great teacher. And thank you very much.
Finally, an actual beginner video ! This was so helpful !💕
I was always thinking of buying a sewing machine. Just repaired all the holes in my favorite shorts and socks. Found a new hobby.
Ugh! I loved this video. I've been getting into sewing and have actually sewed a baby quilt by hand for my newborn cousin. But my mom gave me an old sewing machine she never uses anymore and I've been so terrified of learning how to use it. Now I feel 10x more confident that I can figure it out!
This is the absolute best tutorial I've seen! No wonder it has almost 3.5 million views. Thank you Gretchen (AKA Gertie).
I'm 55 and I've never had anyone show me how to sew. My husband is buying me my first sewing machine and I'm sooo excited!! Thank you for this great tutorial. It was easy to understand and I can't wait to start sewing!
Amazing Maria! Good luck on your sewing adventures and feel free to share with us your progress!
Thank you for this awesome how-to vid! I tried and failed at setting up my machine a few years ago. With your incredible detailed instructions, I am going to try again!
I'm genuinely impressed with just how helpful this video is. Found almost the same machine that you are using by Kenmore at a thrift store for $20, didn't know how to use it. This helped me a lot and now I'm confident to tailor my clothes with my machine. Thank you so much!!! Makes buying clothes a lot easier when you know you have backup!
I’ve saved this video for reference since I haven’t touched my sewing machine in about 25+ years! Our 20 year old daughter has learned to sew during quarantine and has made ten masks for friends and family. I’m so proud that she has taken the time during quarantine to learn a skill that will be useful for the rest of her life! This video was VERY well done and I love the napkin project as a way to become familiar with the machine! Now to find 100% cotton during quarantine! Lol Thankfully my seamstress mother has a stash and can mail some to us!
I'm a 48 year old with my mother-in-law's 60's Bernina machine. I have been wanting to try it out for years now and googled sewing for beginners. Your video is spot on - making me comfortable enough to attempt my first sew. Your personal style is also fabulous and your presentation skills impeccable. Thank you so much!!!!!
You can do it!
I highly recommend this video this is the only video that has taught me how to set up my machine and I just started sewing. Thank you for your help
I Love You!! You've Helped me & others out So Much!! You Cut The Learning Curve in 1/2!! Thanks!!
I've just bought my brother sewing machine. I'm a 41 year old guy and I've been waiting for this for years.

How are your sewing skills now?
Enexaya, I'm sewing masks to help protect (at least a little) against COVID19. Not what I thought I'd be making, but I'm learning quickly. Thank you for asking. Also, I can make a scrunchie in five minutes or less now. 😁
I absolutely agree about the "take-up Lever"...I've had experiences where there was a huge pilling up of the thread and it looked horrible, each time I had to spent time to cut away the excess. Until I figured that it wasn't threaded properly so there wasn't that tension. Everything changed after that. So that's a great point. Awesome tutorial to show the basics. But one has to use a machine continuously to get a feel for it and comfort grows with experience. Thanks for Sharing. :)
I've sent this video to so many people since it taught me how to get started with my machine a few months ago and I've been fanatically sewing ever since! Thank you!!
Hello Lissa
This was amazing and she is FABULOUS! Thank You
Best tutorial I have seen. Right to the point I m 73 and beginning...u are so calm and pleasant. Love vintage ...subscribed. thank u!!!

I have always been intimidated by sewing but I’m so happy I found this video! I feel like I can start a new hobby in confidence now and I can’t wait to get a sewing machine! Thank you Gretchen!
Gretchen you made my experience on my first sewing machine by myself fun and easy to understand. I feel like I can do more now! You are a great teacher.
The instructor is beautiful and a good teacher!
Thank you for the fabulous introduction with excellent command of the language and use of analogies to everyday tasks (driving a car, flossing teeth, etc.). You have inspired confidence for me to take the new machine out of the box!
Hello Peggy
GREAT Teacher. Her video answered all my questions and her demonstrations are excellent as she breaks the process down to it's most elementary function and explains each in detail and a little bit of theory.
So helpful with the tension, stitch length and all that other stuff. I needed this.
Great class! I’m recommending it to my teenage granddaughter to watch before she comes to me for her first lesson.
That’s a great tutorial - easy to follow and very comprehensive. I’ve just started creating protective wear for doctors and nurses in my local hospital and this tutorial was a lifesaver. Thank you! Also, I love your style. 😊🧵
You are a fantastic sewing mentor! Explaining everything so thoroughly and in nice calm pace. I know the basics of sewing already but looking through videos to refresh and catch some things that I have forgotten or haven’t learned. I’m so glad I stumbled upon your channel, I will definitely be going through more of your videos! Your personality and approach is right up my street. Thank you for sharing your knowledge! 🙏🌸💕
My first sewing machine is arriving this afternoon and I'm so excited. Thank you for your very clear introduction!
Thank you so much. You're so helpful, clear and concise. I never had to fast forward thru boring info. You're the best !

THIS HELPED ALOT ! I always see my friends sewing so when I started watching this video, i just went along the steps that the advisor told me and now i have a passion for sewing !!
Love your shoes and the clothes you wear, so graceful like a painting in motion ! What a sincere teacher. .Thank you.
Omg! Please make more teaching videos, I'm hooked. I've always wanted to learn to sew but never had anyone to show me as good as you did! I believe that I can learn with your tutorials. Bravo Thank you so much!!!
I have long thought it would be interesting, rewarding, and fun to learn to sew with a machine, but I didn't know where to begin. Your video is awesome. I'm both a teacher and a filmmaker, so in both of those areas I salute you for making such a pleasant, informative, and easy-to-follow lesson. You are very impressive! You have inspired me for sure!
A million THANK YOUs for introducing me to hand cranking through hard parts. This has changed my quilting life. Thank you. This is a GREAT vid.
Im 17 and have been hand sewing since I was 12 but not a single drop of machine experience but now I get to learn because my grandmother left me her sewing machine from 1942 :)
Oh my Gosh, you're so gorgeous and have a nice style. That's the kind of inspiration I've been looking for !
Awesome Tutorial. One of my favorites that I have found so far. I am new to sewing so will definitely be watching more
Slow clap at 6:18 when she defines the often-debated ideal direction of a toilet paper roll all nonchalant like this hasn't been a common fight in families since the beginning of TP time...

She was right tho 😉
Yes! You lady are a so lovely, beautiful, original and smart! Thank you!
I have to say a BIG "thank you"! I had NO idea what I was doing, never used a sewing machine in my life and was incredibly intimidated trying to figure out how to use this machine. You made this super easy to understand and I feel great about making masks for my family now. I'm VERY grateful for this content. Please make more videos! :)
Thanks Gretchen! Like a few others here we are in quarantine and trying to make face masks. I did a little research and fumbled through some for my immediate family here, but was really struggling after reading the manual on an older Singer given to us after losing everything in a fire a while back. Lot's of birds nests and such. You saved my day. Today was much neater and am sending a batch of masks to some family in Houston. 61 years old. Never too late to learn something useful. Love the presentation and colorful space there!
Brilliant, I'm thinking of starting as a beginner. Love your designs
My grandma giftet me an old sewing machine a year ago and I've finally found time to sit down and learn. This was really helpful.
I haven't touched a sewing machine in well over a decade. Saw this video and it totally made me want to pick up sewing again, and I did! Love this beginner video!! Can't wait to sew more things!
