Fix your mountain bike with hardware store parts!

  • Bike parts are expensive. In a pinch, can we replace a highly specific suspension pivot bolt with a part from the local hardware store? That's the question I'm asking this week as I rush to repair my Rocky Mountain Altitude Powerplay in time for some weekend rides with my family. The results surprised me! (Hint: it worked)
    This is my first long-format CZcams video, so I welcome your feedback, tips and criticism. Also - let me know what you'd like to see more of moving forward! Thanks so much for watching.

    Drilling out the flange is smart, I haven't thought of doing that before TBH! I have been tempted to get a habor freight mini lathe for all the times i need to modify hardware store bolts/nuts 😂

      Thanks Phil! Back home in Canada my friend has a little 9” southbend lathe and it’s amazing the reasons we’d find to fire that thing up. Indispensable shop tool I would say!

    The usual hardware store bolts are called chewing gum steel bolts here in germany, because they tend to bend easily.
    we measure the hardeness in Brinell and the hardware store gives you usually 4.8 which is something like 41 Kp/mm2
    You may consider to check that for your application and you may use 8.8 (81 Kp/mm2) if you want to have it lasting. anyhow a good idea.

    • @outsidebrendan
      @outsidebrendan  Před 6 měsíci +2

      Thank you! You’re right about that. I guess since the original hardware was aluminum I didn’t want to go with a harder steel. Love the phrase “chewing gum steel.” I’m going to remember that.

    Bolts down near the BB getting wear on them often produce creaks. Nice fix.

    Such a genius hack, the weight weenies will complain about it though :)
    The good thing is the bolt will not snap anymore haha

    Put a nut on bolt before cutting . When you unscrew nut, threads on bolt get chased, unchased threads can be hard to start .

    • @outsidebrendan
      @outsidebrendan  Před rokem

      That’s true. I was lazy here because I didn’t have the right but to fit. I just cleaned up the threads with my deburring tool afterwards

    Excellent! I also fixed my bike (kickstand) by drilling out the rivet + pin and replacing it with a hardware store bolt. Wonderful to fix things with simple everyday parts! I sometimes also drill and tap from metric to imperial so I can use what's readily available...

    • @outsidebrendan
      @outsidebrendan  Před rokem

      That's a good hack, it's really hard to find metric bolts in the average US hardware store. Or even Canadian for that matter.

  • @venacava_mtb
    @venacava_mtb Před rokem +1

    That's awesome! I love these types of hacks cause I'm cheep also😂😂😂. I was doing maintenance on a fork once. Noticed one of the o-rings was nicked. Rather than buying a whole kit for that one o-ring. I just went down to the hardware store and found the closest match. Worked great and it cost me like 16 cents! 😁

    • @outsidebrendan
      @outsidebrendan  Před rokem

      Hey that’s great! I don’t think I would have expected to find a suitable o-ring replacement at the hardware store. I feel like I always have to plan my suspension maintenance months in advance haha

    I did this, except I also pulled the bearing and just replaced it with a nylon spacer, it’s been 300 miles and for 4$ vs Giant wanting 75$, I have replaced my rocker arm hardware and it completely fine. Bearings are extremely overkill and over engineered, nylon spacers are way better, cheaper and work just fine

    Tip:
    Try to get the bolt flush so the housing won't rub. Maybe you already did. But I saw the pic on Instagram, the bolt was a bit too long.

      @outsidebrendan  Před rokem +1

    It's common to make that kind of joint weaker than the rest of the bike frame, to make break points, it's cheaper to break the bolt than the frame. That's why I think bolts are made from aluminium. Aluminium isn't real strong material for bolts of any kind. On another point of view, maybe it is for the purpose to make you pay more for maintaining that bike and profit for the corporation. You choose what is the key point.

    who the hell owns a 6 to 10 grand moutain bike.... i dont give a ratts ass if its electric... can get the fanciest strongest motor and controller kits for a couple grand even with a completely custom bike made i dont see how that price is what it is..
