  • FIREWIRE Tomo Hydroshort Review - WOOLY TV #18
    Wooly weighs 87kg/192lb and is 6'1/187cm tall
    Wooly is riding a 5'11 x 19 13/16" x 2 5/8" - 33l
    The Firewire Hydroshort by Daniel Thomson is a next gen shaped board for small to medium waves. Sitting under its bigger brother the 'Hydronaut'. This board has been created to be a everyday condition board while still performing like a high performance surfboard. With a funky outline, featuring a torpedo nose and quad concave the Hydroshort is a ultimate fun performance board that can be ridden as a thruster or quad.
    Wooly puts this board to the test along the West Oz coast surfing it from waist high beachys to overhead rolling point breaks.

    I've got a 6ft 1 @ 36.4L and I'm 6ft and 86kg's and feels perfect. My usual literage is around 34L and was slightly concerned that it might be too buoyant but it's not. It paddles really well, duck dives easily and doesn't feel corky at all. Only ridden it 3 times from 2-4ft and I'm excited to get it in again. Thanks for the review Wooly! I watch all of your videos even if I'm not in the market/interested in a particular board :-)

    I like the outline, sometimes boards seem a bit unnecessarily pointy. It doesn't have a step down rail, but the Hellfire had a really deep concave. Hard to tell on video, is the concave as deep as the hellfire. Hellfire was one of the best boards I've ever ridden. Spewing they discontinued it....but yeah, this looks a lot better than most of the other short wide boards Firewire are offering these days...cheers for the vid : )

      Dont discount the Seaside, Glazer and Twice Baked, for smaller flatter waves and surprisingly also in decent HH waves these shapes have a lot going for them.
      The Hellfire was a beast and the Hydroshort has a similar wave range.

    Nice one Wooly! Thanks for the email responses. Following up - I recently got a 5' 9" SeaSide (SS) and 6' 8" SeaSide and Beyond (SS&B), and wanted something a bit in-between, and all roads converged on the Hydroshort. I wanted the glide and wave catching of the SS&B and the playfulness of the shorter SS. I also wanted a narrower board relative to the SS. With any new board, I debated volume and sizing for way too long (especially with the plethora of internet surfboard-sizing responses out there) - haha! I ended up with a 6' 2" 38L Hydroshort being a bit conservative. I am 5' 9", 190lbs with wetsuit. I am loving the Hydroshort. I prefer it with the medium quads the best, I did try it using large thrusters. I have had it in a range of conditions 5-6 steep beach breaks, to a number of 3-5 ft steep and rolling beach breaks, 2-3 ft quick close-outs, and yesterday in 2-3 ft rolly beach break waves, which was a blast. It catches waves very well, easy to surf and control, its playful - though I could do with a bit more playfulness, which is more me and my sizing choice. Surprisingly I notice the volume/width and the feeling of being over-volumed with the 37L SS much more, whereas I don't notice the 38L with the Hydroshort - maybe because it is distributed over a longer board. It feels balanced. Only a few misteps on feet position. Since getting it, I have not had any buyers remorse on sizing. It is easy to paddle and control. It has this nice glide to catch waves and then it just picks up speed on the face. I find the Hydroshort to be a great DD. At one surf spot (again probably size/length) it doesn't handle the small but punchy beach breaks/close-outs as well as the shorter SS. Outside of this, it does a lot very well. After riding the Hydroshort back to back with the SS, I appreciate the increase in rocker of the Hydroshort relative to the flatter bottom of the SS. Yesterday, was the test, 2-3ftt rolly beach break, I preferred it over the SS because of how well it catches waves comparatively. I definitely feel my surfing can progress the most with the Hydroshort.

      Excellent! Glad you are enjoying all those boards. You will get some enjoyment out of the Hydroshort, its one of the fastest boards I have used this year. I enjoyed riding it as a quad too.

    • @evomaniac4138
      @evomaniac4138 Před 3 lety +1

      Good info mate, i too believe the Hydroshort can be ridden over normal volume without losing performance, as you say it is a very nice foil/foam distribution and its rail profile from nose to tail is very well designed. It struggles in small curvy waves as the rail feels long and is more suited to open face carves in waves from chest to well overhead. With room to move on quality long waves it is the best board i have ridden. I tried the FCS Toledo tri fins in mine in good waves, then swapped out for quads same surf, much better as a quad.

      @@evomaniac4138 Thanks Evo maniac!!! I have been having some great surfs on it. Yes, I was truly surprised that the it didn't feel boaty at 38L, like the SeaSide. However, I am looking for a board to replace the Seaside for the steeper breaks (small curvy waves), have you surfed the Cymatic? This is what I am looking at now for these conditions. Cheers!

    • @evomaniac4138
      @evomaniac4138 Před 3 lety +3

      My mate has a Cymatic and just bought a hydroshort. Loves both of them, he rode the Cymatic in the Telos in Feb and it went insane. Perfect combo for what you are after. I ride a No Brainer for fast hollow waves and it goes surprisingly good. I would have a Cymatic but the biggest one is 45lts and I ride 48-49 now. Another good surfer I know rips on his Cymatic in hollow waves.

      @@evomaniac4138 Thanks! A question for you or Wooly - what is the performance difference associated with liters difference? For example, will 6' 0" perform that much different than 6' 1" or 6'2"? The volume will help in paddling but when does it hinder performance on the wave? How much of this depends on the rail type? Part of me is considering trying a lower volume Hydroshort to recognize and understand the performance differences, as I like the board. As opposed to trying a new board with different characteristics. I feel at this point, I need to understand how volume influences performance and paddling. So how much would a 5' 11" increase my on the wave performance versus my current 6' 2"? what would be a good next volume to try? Now I know they are different boards, but I definitely recognize the length difference between the 6' 8" SS&B and 6' 2" Hydroshort. The SS is so wide its hard to scale with its shorter length.

    Thanks for the board review Wooly. Very interested in the board after seeing this video. I'm intermediate looking to improve and around 81kg 179cm and noticed you saying that sizing up a little may be a good option. At 81kg do you think the 5'11 would be a good option, or should I be looking at something smaller? I have a board for large waves already, so this would be for anything up to 5 foot. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    I have a 5'8 seaside that I love (80kg, and after a lot less surfing the last coupler og years I've added more foam to my boards).
    What would be the perfect board for better waves? I don't do heavy surf, but feel like the seaside has a limit when it comes to steeper takeoffs and waves that have more push in them. I have a 5'8 cymatic, but haven't used it much. It feels small now that I've gotteb used to more foam, and I'm not sure if I should get a bigger one or something else. Great review big wool, at times i could see the board not quite behaving how you expected but i see that as a big plus with Tomo's boards, the quad inside single concave gives a feeling of lift and flight that makes for an exciting ride. Much different to the standard single to double concave boards that i also ride and most of us are used to.
    I was also pleased to hear your thoughts on volume with the helium construction and all that lift and speed underfoot. The boards certainly dont feel like high volume slugs, and can be ridden at a higher volume although the extra length limits them in smaller curvy waves.
    Much prefer mine as a quad as it gives stability and a bit more positivity into turns, tames the wildness a bit.
