What are you using for Spelling right now in your homeschool? What have you tried? What's worked, what hasn't??? We are in the process of switching up things for Spelling and I am loving this so far!

Phenomenal video because Traditional Spelling is a program I've been trying to decide about. I was stuck between this and Abeka. I know it looks like I'm stalking your videos, but you provide so much good information and we seem to like the same types of programs.

Great review! Thank you for sharing this in depth review! We use the Kindergarten MP Enrichment Guides and love it! Thinking about adding their spelling next year.

That was a great overview. You came up on my feed and we’ve been using this for a couple of weeks and my daughter seems to be enjoying it. We did Memoria Press kindergarten and their First Start Reading program pairs beautifully with the spelling program.

In defense of Classical Phonics: it’s only a part of Memoria Press learn to read program which is called First Start Reading and is completed in Kindergarten and the very beginning of first grade (with FSR “E”). My son has done All About Reading 1 and is almost finished with AAR2. I plan to do AAS1 with him this semester and then switch all language arts over to Memoria Press in the fall. Why? AAR and AAS are excellent programs and serving us well but they’re also super parent intensive and have a lot of “moving parts”, most notably all the cutting out of activities you have to do. We did all of them in AAR1 but for AAR2, reading has finally “clicked” for my son and he just wants to get through it so we skip a lot of the activities. I’m switching because we need something more straightforward that I can throw in a backpack and take with us as we go to a lot of medical appointments. Also, all of Memoria Press’s 1st grade language arts works together. Storytime Treasures, aside from using great children’s literature, also has phonics lessons that correspond with Traditional Spelling so your child is getting the same phonics concepts reinforced in reading and in spelling. Thanks so much for this video. I enjoyed the deep dive into the curriculum and can’t wait for it to come in the mail. 😊

The timing of this is perfect! We are about to finish All About Spelling Level 2, and we do not love it. I am also on the hunt for a spelling program. My daughter needs the instruction, but is so resistant to anything writing. I thought All About Spelling would be a good fit since it does not have a ton of writing, but it just isn't the right fit for us. I'm on the hunt for something new as well.

So glad you found something. We use All About Spelling and love it. My son didn't care for AAS and had used Evan Moor workbooks but he had very little retention. We are now back in AAS finishing level 4 in 7th grade and he is showing more patience for learning the program because he wants to be a better speller. I am using Explode the Code to also help with spelling and phonics with my soon to be second grader.

My absolutely favorite spelling program is Fitzroy word families, the BEarth Institute's Earthschooling program uses the same approach but for a much bigger price tag (I've used both).
Of my 5 - 4 have special needs, the oldest was very gifted, tests at genius level... That's more of an issue in the "special needs" department for the parent - I didn't need a program for him, he just started reading at 3, reading encyclopedias, and car manuals at 5. My next child we were firmly unschooling and she was reading by 5 to 6 years old.
My last 3 (all boys) reading was more of a struggle for, my middle child was born with congenital cytomegalovirus, he also has dyspraxia, ODD, dyslexia, my 4th child was born with crainiostenosis which I refused surgery for as we have Von-Willie brands disease, my youngest was born with severe oral and verbal dyspraxia (at 5.5 years old after years of therapy they said he would never talk - I got him talking with the GAPS protocol) he also had secondary selective mutism, mild global dyspraxia, SPD and as if that wasn't enough he was attacked by a bat 2 days before he turned 3 and I was forced to give him the rabies protocol... Which he had a severe neurological reaction too to the point of needing to rule out brain cancer - yes not the type of excitement people want in their lives. All that to say it wasn't expected that my youngest would ever talk, and then when he was it wasn't expected that he would read - and he does.
Initially we just started out with Fitzroy word families, when he was feeling successful with that I added in explode the code, I then stumbled across "decodable readers Australia" - which are not cheap, but wow, they are an excellent reading program. We've now also added in Targeting Spelling which is another really cheap but effective spelling program - we alternate using the 3 different yet similar approaches so that he has variety.
With the Fitzroy word families I will say the words in the list for that day and he will write them on the blackboard in chalk, he likes writing on there, and if he does make a mistake he can easily correct it, he then copies those words into his sentences book, we make up a sentence that involves a few of the words in the list which I write out, and he copies into his book - then he draws a picture for the sentence. I get him to read previous sentences, which exposes him to other words like the, they etc - he remembers those other words because they are in sentences his made. There is a reading program that goes along with Fitzroy word families called Fitzroy reader - we do have a random few of their books, and they are much cheaper than the decodable readers - but I'm sticking with what works.
I don't think it needs to be more complicated than that, with my 3rd, and 4th kids we didn't really attempt any form of regular, structured reading, spelling till they were around 10 and they *wanted* to read - and my 4th child would be the best speller out of all my kids - he went through a stage of all his conversations were spelled out, and you had to reply by spelling out your response. I think that started because when they were younger my oldest son and I would be deciding what we were going to get upto that day, but we didn't want to say it out loud and get the kids excited and that's not what we were doing so we would spell out our suggestions - then one day we were doing that and my 4th child started jumping up and down "YES, YES - I'm getting ready now" - we were like... "Oh shit - now they can spell, nothing is sacred anymore".

This last year we used Spelling You See. I have liked book A, but I don't think my daughter is going to like the later levels with all the copywork. We actually used Memoria Press to teach reading (their First Steps Into Reading program), we liked that, but has never looked into their spelling before. Now you have me interested!
Did you say it's 36 weeks long?

We have tried so many spelling options. Some of our LA curriculum has had spelling included and that was not good for us. We aren’t great at practicing without activities already given to us. We’ve also done Soaring with Spelling, Spelling Power and Spelling You See. My oldest is now just doing Evan Moor Spelling. I’m pleased with it. I’m not sure if it is the best, but I was tired of looking.

I am using AAS with my oldest and I don’t care for it. We are half way done with AAS 3. I do like the spelling rules in AAS. How do the 2 programs compare in spelling rules? Does this program teach the same spelling rules as AAS?

    • @OdetoAbode
      @OdetoAbode  Před rokem

It does teach the rules, but at a much faster pace and more concisely. There's no fluff or hands-on activities to practice.

@Ode to Abode We are looking for a spelling program for next year. My daughter is 10 years old. We have used AAS as well, and we think it is very tedious. We have also used Silver Moon Spelling. It is very similar to AAS. Silver Moon Spelling has some fun spelling rule cards that we really enjoy. Traditional Spelling looks to me like a simpler and less tedious version of both of these programs. I think I would want to place my daughter in level III if we used this program. The other spelling program we are considering is Sequential Spelling. Do you have any thoughts about Sequential Spelling? Have you ever considered it? I am interested in other secular spelling programs you are considering as we prepare for next year. Thank you!
