Training for a Hot Ultra in the SNOW | Winter in Wales

  • At the end of 2019 we decided to make a base again in Wales after many years travelling and living abroad. I was excited to focus on some long mountain days in the Brecon Beacons and get out in whatever conditions winter threw at me as I prepared for my first Ultra of the 2020 season, the 128km Transgrancanaria. Winter in the Brecon Beacons couldn't have been any different to hot and rocky trails I'd expect in Gran Canaria but I was interested to see how fitness would build for a strong race day.

    You are training in tough conditions on purpose - true ultra runner :D
    What I do for winter hmm. I like to run at night time in the winter do avoid having to deal with the sun. Especially around February now the sun is so hot it is baking but you go into the shade and get a gust of wind and suddenly you are freezing... so it can be really tough running in conditions which feel literally 16 degrees celsius apart. That is too much clothes difference - if the trail is not totally open to the sun I op for a night time run. Also try to run when the wind is less. Windy.com is a good site etc...
    Less traffic for road running at night too :)

    Yeah Harry, killing it! I'm looking to start trail running very soon, always wanted to run up and down the typical Pen-Y-Fan route from the car park. Excited to get off the roads and up mountains and into wilder areas :D I also hope my body will appreciate the trails more than the roads

    Looks great. Getting the right gear for the winter is a must and having it with you and not at home!!!! Also great time to train in the dark and test out your gear like headlamps and troubleshooting all those things that can go wrong. Better to do it in training and not on race day.

    Awesome video Harry! I’ve gotten my first Speed Goats 4 recently because of you and they’ve been amazing. They are a lifesaver for a winter training because of the vibram footplate and the goretex layer definitely helps out with mud and wet grass.

      Thanks Michael! Same looking forward to plenty of time in Snowdonia. No TGC for me this year, kind of difficult for us to get the mountain time I’d want in the lead up with all these lockdowns. Fingers crossed 🤞 I’ll get back there in 2022 to climb a few places higher 😁

      Hey Stephen. Yes I’m wearing the Aeropex. I like them, great for day to day runs and hearing the world around you at the same time, I use mine most days. Windy days in the mountains you do struggle a bit as they aren’t in your lobes.

  • @cherries4life387
    @cherries4life387 Před 3 lety +1

    Hey Harry, if you see this, I was wondering for a mountainous race like TGC or UTMB, do you prefer to do all your runs with hills/elevation gain, or do you plan in flat running as well in the week?

    • @HarryRunsUK
      @HarryRunsUK  Před 3 lety

      For a race like UTMB I like to get in a large amount of vertical in the lead up, but certainly some more rolling/flatter runs will help to keep the legs moving well. Same for TGC. To do your best having good running economy and leg turnover matters. So aiming to put some flatter intervals into your training can really help. Everyone’s a bit different though, important to work your weaknesses in training and find balance in training. Are you signed up for either races?

    • @cherries4life387
      @cherries4life387 Před 3 lety

      @@HarryRunsUK Thanks for the reply. Yes that makes sense, and finding that balance/understanding my weaknesses will take a few more years for me I think.
      No not signed up for either... I would love to do TGC in a few years time, and then UTMB a while after.
      I am looking at Cappadocia next October as my first 100km+ race, as have currently only raced in the 50km - 50 mile range, and reluctant to book anything too soon in 2021

    What was the coldest temperature on this particular run?

    • @HarryRunsUK
      @HarryRunsUK  Před 3 lety +1

      Not sure probably around -5C -10C maybe a little cooler with the wind chill on the windier days. Cold enough for me but far colder mountains out there 🥶
