    I'm an engineer, newly retired, and considering educational videos. These will require viewing a table area about the size of a drafting table (or twice that perhaps) down to microelectronics circuit shots. Also, we really still only have 35mm camera bodies (yes, Nikon FE in mint condition and its original 50mm f/1.4 lens) plus our phone cameras and an older GoPro. That's it. So I'd like this new setup to also be something our family, children, and grandchildren (all of whom live here with my on our farm/forest site) can use for driving trips around Washington, Oregon, and Idaho. It was very nice to see the versatility that you took such precious time to offer. Appreciated!

    Thanks for the awesome review! This lens is going to be my next purchase for my landscape and nature photography. I have had dedicated macro lenses in the past but end up not wanting to bring another lens when on a photography trip. So the fact that macro is include with a sharp 70-200 focal range will be perfect for my needs.

    Appreciate your straightforward reviews! I just got a copy of this lens. Is there movement inside the lens when it’s not attached to the camera? When I turn the lens upside down there seems to be a slight vibration and a little “thumping “ noise inside the lens. Is it a motor or stabilizer moving or did I get a bad copy? Love the optical quality of the lens. Thanks for your time.

    🫡 Hey Jason, great review! I am concerned about the x2 teleconverter on this lens, I’d use it mostly for video but also for photos sometimes on new Sony full frame sensors with dual base ISO 12,800, so I’m not concerned about light, is it sharp enough to work just fine with a x2? or you only suggest pairing it with the x1.4 TC? Thanks!

    • @Jason_Hermann
      @Jason_Hermann  Před 4 dny

      This lens is sharp enough where you can use either the 2x or 1.4x with excellent results. Of course the 1.4x teleconverter will be just ever so slightly sharper...

    Jason would you choose this lens with a 2x tele converter over the Sony 100-400 GM

    • @Jason_Hermann
      @Jason_Hermann  Před 20 dny

      Yes I would if I had to pick between the two lenses, because this lens allows for Macro and you can a 70-200mm lens when you need it also... In addition the 100-400mm lens is now one of the oldest lenses in Sony's line-up so I feel like a new model will be coming out soon with significant upgrades.. I also have the 200-600mm for those occasions when maximum reach is required with 1.4x teleconverter...

  • @Chris-ey7zy
    @Chris-ey7zy Před 4 měsíci +1

    This is an amazing lens that shows why Sony is the camera manufacturer to beat. I never knew you could make a small 70-200mm a macro that is 1:1 at this level of quality. And no focus breathing on top of it. Who did they get to design this lens

    • @Jason_Hermann

      I agree and it is game changing lens technology, because Sony has figured out how to make new lens elements that we have never had before. This lens is on my want list for sure!

  • @LoganNolag
    @LoganNolag Před 8 měsíci +2

    I just replaced my 70-200 2.8 GM II and 90mm Macro with this lens. Even with the reduced weight of the 70-200 GM II I found that it's still a bit too big for daily use and since this one does macro I don't really need a dedicated macro lens anymore. If this lens was out when I got my 70-200 GM II I probably would have bought this one instead right from the get go.

    • @LoganNolag
      @LoganNolag Před 8 měsíci

      No regrets yet. Honestly with the modern cameras f4 and f2.8 really aren't that different and with the much closer focusing ability of the f4 lens it makes up for the DOF difference pretty well. Also once you remove the tripod collar it doesn't even feel like a big lens at all.@@RandumbTech

  • @yartriesthis

    @Jason Hermann so is this lens a Macro and telephoto? its like two in one?

    • @Jason_Hermann
      @Jason_Hermann  Před 10 měsíci

      Yeah, except it's not a true 1:1 macro lens, only a .5X macro, but that is still incredible and lets you get way closer to subjects than any other telephoto lens I ever used... With the 1.4X tele it is a .7x and with the 2x teleconverter it then becomes a 1:1 Macro lens also... Very tempted to buy this lens myself!

    Quick question if you don’t mind me asking!🚨
    I was about to buy the 70-200 f2.8 GM ii ($2,000+). Other than the lower price and the higher F-stop, is the Macro G the same as the GM ii? Just… better?!

    • @Jason_Hermann
      @Jason_Hermann  Před 10 měsíci +1

      No, it is not the same type of lens. The faster f/2.8 aperture on the GM II makes it better for low light, weddings, portraits, indoor sports, etc... This lens is slower, lighter weight, but also offers the macro ability which in my opinion is awesome and more valuable to me at this current time since I don't need the f/2.8 zoom. If you need that f/2.8 aperture though, the GM II would be a better option depending...

    A 100-500 would be awesome! I love my 100-400 and my 200-600, but a 100-500 f4.5-f6.3 would be great! One that accepts a TC with the full range of the zoom (Unlike Canon). 400 is just a little too short, and 600 is just too heavy and large, 500 would be a great compromise.

    • @Jason_Hermann
      @Jason_Hermann  Před 11 měsíci

      I 100% agree with everything you said David :) I can't believe Canon didn't make the lens fully TC compatible and was shocked to learn that a few months ago, but they don't have the same technology as Sony yet I guess, and/or just compromised to make the lens as small as possible.... • @Jason_Hermann
      @Jason_Hermann  Před 11 měsíci +1

      Yeah I used the 200-600mm and it is an awesome lens, but the size and weight gets me down for what I like to do mostly. I really feel like the 200-600mm could be even better with an update using Sony's latest and greatest technologies. For example, the stabilization on that Canon lens is next level to say the least... Sony makes there lenses from scratch these days and the "new" lens development can take 5-10 years depending and we just have to be patient is all... Sony is literally inventing technology to make better lenses as they make them, and I always need to keep that in mind... This lens is a perfect example of that. I figure it can't hurt to put some request in for new lenses :)
