I've been tempted to pick one of these up for gmrs. Actually I think the one I had looked at was a 880 but looks the same.

The Kenwood Tk-7xx and tk800 series are pretty much universal for parts swaps so they are pretty identical. I do have a TK-880 Type 1 video I did - had to slide the coverage down to be able to get 70cm repeaters (stock coverage for type 1 is 450-490,. czcams.com/video/qbcDEgNUk7E/video.html

Well since the 780 uses the same program and cable I might as well get one of these also. Any place you buy these online for decent prices?

@@rkelly5803 I hunt them out on eBay mostly. I’ve had to be careful
as some have cut power and antenna wires. But around $50~$70 depending. Some may or may not come with microphones. There are a bunch of microphones to fit them for $10-15.

Hi Eric, I got two of them radio setting in my project box, where did you find the programming cable & software? I thought about making a 2m mobile repeater.

Hey Bob - I found the cable on amazon amzn.to/3EXkBxr and the files over at hamfiles.com They are really versatile radios ! Great for a compact repeater setup. I saw rack mounts being sold on eBay for these radios for repeater use ! Also if you grab a copy of the service manual you can do front panel programming if you remove a resistor or the board. 73 ! @@EricTechstuffs is it hard to do? The only experience I have is programming from a laptop to the radio

@@MattMan362 No, not hard to do at all. The TK-780 comes in 2 Versions a Type 1 and Type 2 for coverage .Type 1: 146-174 MHz / Type 2: 136-162 MHz. Frequency coverage varies. Since your familiar with programming, the Kenwood software is like how CHRIP is layout. You can program them with Kenwood Software for Windows found for free online. I bought a USB cable off amazon and plugs into the mic port. The service Manual is also free online. The software will say when programming the frequency is out of range ..but will take. I had to readjust a UHF version a TK-880 to allow transmit on 70cm since it's coverage was limited to above 450 MHz. I did a video on that. The layouts on the UHF and VHF versions are the same inside : czcams.com/video/qbcDEgNUk7E/video.html

Very nice radios. Kenwoods have been a go to for Public Safety use for decades...for good reason - built well - and easy to program ! Thanks for watching !
