The day I quit drinking is the day I stop watching this video. Every Saturday night like clockwork I get drunk and find myself watching it. Sobriety is overrated.
woke up hungover at fuck at 3:30 am right now. the song popped in my head and for whatever reason i never seen the video…made a hair of the dog cocktail and threw this on. don’t regret either.
the best part is the show required prerecorded audio (and lip syncing) for for better sound quality, which he had to make the night before, so he deliberately put that "accident" in the special mix. there was a big Q&A from Conn that someone posted for one of these videos where he talks about it
@@romulusnr That's amazing! And yeah I did see Bobby Conn play like maybe 12 years ago or something like that. I think the viola or violin player was his wife or something. It was them plus a bassplayer and a drummer and Bobby played electric guitar.
Comedian Pat Dixon introduced me to this counterfeit David Bowie a year ago, and my first impression was, “How have I not known about the great Bobby Conn? I do now, and blessed for it.”
I like to image what everyone's backstory is in this video. There's Stompy right behind Bobby Conn, trying to steal the show, the blue girl placed right next to the red girl as some kind of rivalry, the little African-American girl desperate to get out of shot, the guy in brown with the glasses whose attempt at cool dancing is unravelling before our eyes, the guy carrying a terrified toddler and Vinnie, the Mafia hit man. I would love to see a reunion of all these people and get them to dance once more.
Stompy came dangerously close to giving an accidental crotch shot a few times. I think she and Blue Flannel shirt guy have something going on.The girl dressed in black in the back had some amazing head/neck moves going on, which leads me to believe she came prepared to dance to the Original version of this song. Sadly Vinnie the hitman wont be attending any reunion as he disappeared right after this aired. Turns out he had a "job" that day, but he took Bobby Conn's words to heart, and went dancing instead. The Boss was not happy. He may be at the bottom of lake Michigan wearing cement shoes but it was totally worth it to be in this legend of a video.
LOVE how he forgets and accidentally sings the original lyrics at 3:15... "Never gonna get ahead / givin' head to the man / NO, OOPS!" And at the end of the next line throws in "I'm sorry!" Considering the lip-synchy feel of most of it, actually, I'm now considering the possibility that this "screw-up" was entirely planned... Bobby is a genius.
"Listen up, children. The values and lessons in life...you only get one chance to learn it. Only one time to learn who the man is, and who to say no to...and that's The Man. I don't want to ever see you say yes to The Man. NO, NEVER!" Words to live by.
This song is so fucked up I love it lol at parts it sounds almost exactly like a Jackson 5 hit which makes it all the more bizarre given the lyrics. Scissor Sisters definitely were inspired by this song. The catchy disco like beat mixed the obscene lyrics Scissor Sister's song "I Can't Decide" instantly comes to mind
Years ago I was at my grandma and grandads I must of been 13 ish me and my uncle where washing up the dishes and this came on the tv on vh1 ...my life changed forever ....I thought it was the single most funniest thing I had seen ....we still talk about it now and laugh and I am 35 now!!....glad I found this video 👍🏻👍🏻
Ah, Bobby Conn... I remember first seeing him on MTV when I was 12 and wondering what the hell was going on. But even then I knew I was watching something special and the song has stuck in my head ever since. Also cool to see that Charlie Brooker is a fan and has sent people here. He picked another BC song to play on bbc 6music today ('winners'). It sent me here to relive old memories. :D
I can relate - I went through a huge (5 year) phase of coming home drunk, partying my arse off for about 5 songs then passing out. I found out some years later that my drunk-session MP3 player had kept tallies of what I'd listened to. "Just The Girl You Want" by Devo. Over and over. I never even knew I liked that song :)
This song randomly popped in my head tonight so I had to look it up. I remember first watching this back somewhere around 2007-2009 while I was in college. The video was so weird but addicting it helped me through some rough times.
the first time i saw this i was watching it with a bunch of mates. we were all in awe. it was pretty obvious it was a joke video but my best friend who'd been staring at it open-mouthed suddenly said - "is he miming??" absolute classic.
The best music video ever, if the story about it is real then it's pure gold! I always thought he was just taking the piss with a funny video, me and my mum used to laugh so much whenever it was on MTV!
Bobby Conn is simply an amazing performer who continues to do whatever he feels like, with the kind of enthusiasm unmatched by a class of 1st graders heading to the zoo for the first time. Give it your all Bobby - The Man don't need our lovin.
The background dancers are priceless, watch it twice and the second time paying special attention to the dancers in the background, this is one of the greatest music videos ever made, I have a fascination with this video that I don't understand, and I don't want to understand it because I believe that would negate my fondness for this video
i learned all my dance moves from this video......im defelently playing this song at my wedding when i get married....and everyone will dance exactly like this ahahahaha
Plus this is like 10 years old, which shows you just how ahead he was of people like Tim and Eric, for instance. Performance art and comedy, hand in hand.
i saw bobby in manchester, england and hugged him body to body, sweat to sweat. i think he wrote 'king for a day' about that night. i am convinced of that.
This is one of the greatest videos ever made by humanoid hand. It's up there with Thriller, that slow motion one by radiohead and atmosphere by captain sensible
This guy is amazing. I saw him perform in New York two years ago and he's a really talented musician. His band performed the original version, "You're never gonna get ahead, by giving head to the man." You gotta love how he intentionally goes out of sync with the pre-recorded track. 100% PURE AWESOMENESS!!
it was recorded on chic a go go. that's the original host. longtime dancers soul Rebel & Gentleman John Battles are in the background. this version of the song is featured on the Chic A Go Go sountrack CD.
agreed ,bobby rules, met him talked to him and hes on the level ,check his other song angels and a song called king for a day which is newer but some of the older stuff rules ,hes the dude!!
@Bethfromwigan The fact that you know the backup dancers by name overwhelms me with respect. I figure many of them went on to a career as Solid Gold dancers.
Dude, Boby Conn (real name: Jeffrey Stafford) is making a mockery of how cheesy the show is. He's playing a joke on the audience, like Andy Kaufman used to do. He knows exactly what he's doing and it's SO awesome that most of America is SO STUPID his brilliance goes right over their heads!!
It slowly begins to dawn on the wee lassie in the green trousers that maybe, just maybe while they all focus on Bobby, she might be able to make a run for the fire exit and freedom!
can't decide if this is one of the greatest achievements in the history of mankind or a crime against humanity-the girl in the blue dress all but steals the show-curiously addictive.
Bobby is an absolute genius at spreading a message through music, besides being totally fucking insane. Who couldn't love that combination? Not me, I've watched this video over a hundred times in three years and I keep coming back for more, Verdad!
I saw this on Adult Swim a couple minutes ago and this is gold
Thank you Off The Air
Off the Air mixed with LSD will break your brain
The day I quit drinking is the day I stop watching this video. Every Saturday night like clockwork I get drunk and find myself watching it. Sobriety is overrated.
Its a masterpiece ill drink to that!!!!
Here we are.
woke up hungover at fuck at 3:30 am right now. the song popped in my head and for whatever reason i never seen the video…made a hair of the dog cocktail and threw this on. don’t regret either.
"Sobriety is overrated"💯💯💯💯
This is one of the best ever buddy!
LMAO! 😂🤣😅😆😁 @ 2:07 the guy in the gray blazer!!!!!
2022 Bobby Conn still hits hard.
2023 calling - it hasn't let up
Somehow I missed this until now. Hits hard as hell in 2023
Now into 2024 😂
Hits harder than ever. The gap between the man and the average person is ever widening.
"You're never gonna get ahead, no, givin head to the man, nooowhoops, you're never gonna get ahead, no, sayin yes to the man i'm sorry"
MrAnarchojoe that’s just fucking awesome
nice catch
the best part is the show required prerecorded audio (and lip syncing) for for better sound quality, which he had to make the night before, so he deliberately put that "accident" in the special mix.

Bobby Conn = A hidden gem to the musical community, and the world.
This is pure gold someone give him a medal.. so perfect on so many levels.. this video could bring about world peace

I still can't fucking believe they played Death Grips.
loved this episode
Comedian Pat Dixon introduced me to this counterfeit David Bowie a year ago, and my first impression was, “How have I not known about the great Bobby Conn? I do now, and blessed for it.”

We've got to make it happen I've loved stompy for 25 years now
And she reminds me of gretchen from recess, I love her too

HAHAHAHA!!!!
Don't forget Donnie Davies. Where my EDiots at?
LOVE how he forgets and accidentally sings the original lyrics at 3:15... "Never gonna get ahead / givin' head to the man / NO, OOPS!" And at the end of the next line throws in "I'm sorry!" Considering the lip-synchy feel of most of it, actually, I'm now considering the possibility that this "screw-up" was entirely planned... Bobby is a genius.
Wow am I glad Off The Air made me aware of this. Why hasn't anyone told me of this GREAT artist before??
Fucking amazing. Credit to Spotify's weekly new music thingy for having introduced me to this song; reality in its infinite complexity.
"Listen up, children. The values and lessons in life...you only get one chance to learn it. Only one time to learn who the man is, and who to say no to...and that's The Man. I don't want to ever see you say yes to The Man.
NO, NEVER!"
Words to live by.
idk sounds like you're telling me how to live, I gotta say no to that
I have found myself watching this video at least once a month for the past two years. I don't know what to do about this.
This is way ahead of its time
This is hilarious! I loved first time I've saw it and it's *still* is brilliant!
With you brother!
This still makes me laugh. Kids have no idea what he is singing about and he almost let parts slip. :) Love it.
This is what happens when you are NOT a point short of genius. Conn is absolutely brilliant.
My favorite CZcams video of all time.
Nobody can do crazy like Bobby Conn can.
I watch it 3 or 4 times in a row about twice a year to keep me grounded. Sometimes more around the holidays.
Ah, Bobby Conn... I remember first seeing him on MTV when I was 12 and wondering what the hell was going on. But even then I knew I was watching something special and the song has stuck in my head ever since.

Bobby Conn fucking rocks.
Benn watching this video for about 20 years now
cause its brilliant°°°
I discovered this song in the mid 2000's when lowtax linked to it, it was a real trip to see it on adult swims "off the air" more than a decade later.
"Giving Yes To The Man"
He's so passionate about his performance sometimes the obscene lyrics try to make their way in.
He almost does it again at 4:00 when he says "Giving...saying yes to the man."
Bobby Conn: smoking hot in 2024
I saw him in Belfast on a barge years ago........the man is a God
Bobby Conn still hot in 2018.
Bobby Conn has nothing left to prove. One of the best entertainers in showbizz.
R3000
Hi, I'm from the future!
The year was 1999. It was 2:30am and I was watching MTV. This came on and changed my life.
2023 and I still come back to Bobby
I stumbled upon this in 2019 and here I am back for more
I can relate - I went through a huge (5 year) phase of coming home drunk, partying my arse off for about 5 songs then passing out. I found out some years later that my drunk-session MP3 player had kept tallies of what I'd listened to. "Just The Girl You Want" by Devo. Over and over. I never even knew I liked that song :)
Well as you can see this cabin
We’re all gonna die ever knowing about this cabin
The more I watch it - the funnier it gets 😮😅😂. Bobby, you’re a legend 😄👍
Light years ahead - Conn - A visionary
This song randomly popped in my head tonight so I had to look it up. I remember first watching this back somewhere around 2007-2009 while I was in college. The video was so weird but addicting it helped me through some rough times.
Quite simply one of the greatest things i have ever seen in my life.
I think I just threw my back out (from laughter). There is a God, afterall, and I thank him/her for this blessing of Bobby Conn.
2023, Bobby still ahead.
This is undoubtably the greatest video ever and also a very important message for all the kids out there !!! ;)

the first time i saw this i was watching it with a bunch of mates. we were all in awe. it was pretty obvious it was a joke video but my best friend who'd been staring at it open-mouthed suddenly said - "is he miming??"
absolute classic.
I can't stop watching this.
I....I love it.
one of the best things I've seen in years, thank you bwahahahaha
The best music video ever, if the story about it is real then it's pure gold! I always thought he was just taking the piss with a funny video, me and my mum used to laugh so much whenever it was on MTV!

Best dance moves. Ever.
this might be the greatest video on youtube
i learned all my dance moves from this video......im defelently playing this song at my wedding when i get married....and everyone will dance exactly like this
ahahahaha
I remember this video from around the millennium so well. One of the best music videos ever. I'm surprised it's not more well known.
Plus this is like 10 years old, which shows you just how ahead he was of people like Tim and Eric, for instance. Performance art and comedy, hand in hand.
The girl in the blue dress in the background is committed. I respect that.
I saw Bobby Conn at the Smell in LA in 2000. He lives up to the hype.
FANTASTIC !!!!!! I saw Bobby in concert in Sheffield uk about 10years back !
2019 and it's still awesome!
i saw bobby in manchester, england and hugged him body to body, sweat to sweat. i think he wrote 'king for a day' about that night. i am convinced of that.
thanx for the vid, been searching n whaiting for 10 years for bobby conn!!!
If there was any justice Mr. Conn would have sold 100 million records, had 30 #1 hits, and been an international super star.
This is one of the greatest videos ever made by humanoid hand. It's up there with Thriller, that slow motion one by radiohead and atmosphere by captain sensible
Charlie what have you made me watch? I will never get those 5 minutes back.
i know! i can't stop watching it. Especially the fantastic dancing!
MGMT stole bobby conn's act :(
how
I'm from the future. Yup
I just saw this guy perform in Brooklyn, NY. He RULES! All hail The Conn!!
This guy is amazing. I saw him perform in New York two years ago and he's a really talented musician. His band performed the original version, "You're never gonna get ahead, by giving head to the man."
You gotta love how he intentionally goes out of sync with the pre-recorded track. 100% PURE AWESOMENESS!!
It's been 15 years since I seen this... my god. How could I have forgot?
Brilliant! Wah wah we miss you
RIP, Viva Zwei
One of my favourite videos. Fantastic.
it was recorded on chic a go go. that's the original host.
longtime dancers soul Rebel & Gentleman John Battles are in the background.
this version of the song is featured on the Chic A Go Go sountrack CD.
The best music video ever made
awesome!
I can't get this song out of my head and I cant stop watching it.
agreed ,bobby rules, met him talked to him and hes on the level ,check his other song angels and a song called king for a day which is newer but some of the older stuff rules ,hes the dude!!
This video made me laugh for weeks. I watch it when I am depressed.

I saw the Connster perform last year in a little Brooklyn club. This man is an under-appreciated genius!
Everything about this is adorable.
The drum fills in the coda 🔥
At the start of the song. Is he trying to sound like a young Michael Jackson from the Jackson 5 days????
Best. Video. Ever.
It slowly begins to dawn on the wee lassie in the green trousers that maybe, just maybe while they all focus on Bobby, she might be able to make a run for the fire exit and freedom!
Saw Bobby in Sheffield fantastic !!!!!!!!!!!!
51 years old. My life is now complete.
He slips the real title in @ 3:15.
+rabinimray and then apologies after he gets the next one correct lol
Legend! I think the audience all have learning difficulties.
That guy with the side blocks and the suit jacket has absolutely stole the show... I’m absolutely flabbergasted.. bobby also kicks ass 👍
Oh and bobby is definitely the bastard son of Iggy pop 👍
her name is emily. she also played in MONITOR RADIO with quintron.
well as you can see this cabin
can't decide if this is one of the greatest achievements in the history of mankind or a crime against humanity-the girl in the blue dress all but steals the show-curiously addictive.
Bobby is an absolute genius at spreading a message through music, besides being totally fucking insane. Who couldn't love that combination? Not me, I've watched this video over a hundred times in three years and I keep coming back for more, Verdad!
You gotta admire a guy with enough sense of humor to pull something like this... he says 10 years later he was still laughing his ass off at this one.
