Lyrics:
Mama, take this badge off of me
I can't use it anymore
It's gettin' dark, too dark to see
I feel I'm knockin' on heaven's door
Knock, knock, knockin' on heaven's door
Knock, knock, knockin' on heaven's door
Knock, knock, knockin' on heaven's door
Knock, knock, knockin' on heaven's door
Mama, put my guns in the ground
I can't shoot them anymore
That long black cloud is comin' down
I feel I'm knockin' on heaven's door
Knock, knock, knockin' on heaven's door

Knock, knock, knockin' on heaven's door

2024… and this masterpiece will never get old
I remember when this came out 1973, it made me sad then and it makes me sad today 47 years later. I had just gotten back from Vietnam and found out my brother had been killed 3 months earlier and nobody told me? I had been in Saigon he was in a POW camp.
My condolences, and thank you for your service. What a powerful testimony.
My heart goes out to you. I'm so sorry for what you had to go through.
T. N. Schumacher so very sorry, no words! Thank you for your service. My father was retired Air Force, he wouldn’t talk about Vietnam Nam. I lost my baby brother, I know the heart ache, all’s I can say is that God better be there for us to be together again. It’s so hard to have faith when there’s children and little animals suffering so horribly everywhere. Without faith we have nothing so I’ll take my faith and keep praying.
Thank you for your service and sacrifice.

Nothing like the original. Even Dylan doesn't do it as well as the studio version. But do yourself a favor and check out this extended version by the Grateful Dead. Jerry Garcia was the BEST at covering Dylan.

One of the DEEPEST MYSTERIES of CREATION - "WHAT is "THE BRAIN" It contains our 'MEMORIES" - of our FIRST LOVE - our FAVORITE SONG - our FOURTH BIRTHDAY PARTY, OUR first PLANE RIDE - our FIRST VOYAGE on an OCEAN LINER - A Lifetime of MEMORIES . Then, put your hand into your inside pocket and there's a MAP for the ROAD AHEAD and it's all in the HANDS OF GOD,
CLOSE YOUR EYES, say THANK YOU LORD, then say 'I'M READY my LORD" - THE DOOR is OPEN - on a WING and a PRAYER - ARCHANGEL MICHAEL has your hand - he loosens his grip and you are suddenly FLYING - into your DESTINY!
THANK YOU, Jesus, Thank you PRESENCE of THE LORD to you!
Yea it's a song. If want life changing experience do it yourself. No malice friend. Perfect song. But cmon even if you climbed everest your sill 20000 feet lower than a commercial jet .get it ....it's about life not getting closer to heaven
Guys, this song really isn't about being too old to do the things you used to and slowly making your way back to God, leaving behind all the things that defined you in your mortal life. That is a really nice interpretation of it as well imo, but it really is about the scene from the movie it comes from. A lawman gets shot and as he slowly stumbles his way to a rock to look off into the sunset; his wife follows him and can't bear to embrace him, she just falls to the ground out of of his reach, looking at him with tears in his eyes. He looks at her shocked, afraid and as if to say 'sorry'. She gives a sad smile. He acknowledges it, still afraid, and looks back towards the sun.
This original is just so beautiful. I was in a cafe listening to someone and this song started to play. It was like time stood still. It was just magical. A timeless original song.
This is Bob. To be sung only when depressed and defeated. To my Dad.

Bob is simply the best song writer ever and will never be replaced 💎
In memoriam of my friend John from England. I saw him first time in the Berlin subway where he played "knockin on heavens door" with his old guitar and only three strings on it. He loved and lived Bob Dylan, his greatest treasure was a Dylan songbook. He always got the people who listened to him in a minute and he made seldom less than 100,- in two hours. Then he spent it all for beer to forget the pain in his soul for the rest of the day, falling asleep under bridges.
@baby jesus uhh not everyone lies for clout
This is absolutely one of the most perfect songs ever written.
circa 1969 Saturday early morning after an all night binge in my holiday seaside town New Brighton, Merseyside, stumbled in to a cafe, only to find the toughest guy in town hungover, nobody messed with this guy, everyone was scared of him and it was just us alone ...so I put this record on and bought him some tea and toast, we where friends for life after that,.... thanks Bob.

Well said. And, Amen.👍🏾
You should read the poem "The Dash"
this song just rips your heart and soul out
This is by far one of the most haunting pieces ever.
One of the most powerful songs ever written
The song reflects themes of mortality, resignation, and the approach of death. The narrator, addressing his "Mama," expresses a sense of weariness and surrender, indicating that he can no longer carry the burdens symbolized by his badge and guns. The repetition of "Knock, knock, knockin' on heaven's door" emphasizes the urgency and inevitability of his situation, as if he is on the brink of passing away and knocking on the door of the afterlife. The imagery of darkness and the approaching storm further underscores the impending sense of finality and closure. Overall, the song captures the emotional weight of facing mortality and the acceptance of one's fate.
Life is too short, just like this song. Enjoy it as long as it lasts

Fell in love with this song when it first came (I was in 9th grade). Didn't really understand the context of lyrics at the time, but as an adult, I get goose bumps whenever I hear it.
Yes this is what I have learned about the song. Bob wrote and recorded "Pat Garrett and Billy the kid" sound track for the movie then when the sheriff gets shot he knows it's over for him and the song is playing in the back round while the sheriff is laying on the ground and the song is singing take this badge I can't use it no more etc...
greatest PEOPLE's songwriter. If ths world survives for another 100yrs, he will be rated alongside Bach & Mozart (et al)
One of my childhood friends passed away today...im playing this song in his honor. At least now he can have some peace in this truly chaotic world! RIP...today is truly a very sad day for me. :(
Sorry Gun's N' Roses, but nothing will triumph the original.
the piano instrumental from Lucifer is a close second to this one tho, having no lyrics somehow makes it more impactful, especially when you know why he was playing it in sadness
Nah, Axl Rose can actually sing unlike Dylan.
The original isn't always better this is a good example original is good but the new one is better. Same with all along the watchtower Dylan version is okay but the hendrix version is iconic
Terminal Lumbago to me this original is sung with more emotion
@@user-hy5jy7sf9j yes but with worse guitar and a worse voice
Thanks Dylan for that masterpiece it’s my dad’s birthday on September 73 salute from Morocco 🇲🇦❤️
This sure shows us the beauty of Bobs' Vocal expertise. Just perfect. Tone, pitch, feelings. Great, portrayal. Just great.
My dad is a Vietnam veteran and just came to my house to tell me he wants this played at his funeral. That is a strange feeling. 😢
Your pop is a hero 💜 He couldn’t of chose a better song 💜 Sending all my love from Liverpool 🇬🇧
@@deadpaul6415 nop. the people who carried the corpses of the innocent people killed by american saldiers in vietnam were the heroes, sadly.
@@deadpaul6415 Thank you, love
I'm Vietnamese
@@ricardovisconti5681 that's very true. Even my daddy said so.
my dad passed away on 29 August this year and he always had bob dylan playing in the house when growing up, he taught me to appreciate music especially from probably the best song writer ever, i play this now in the car and would have a wee cry but his favourite was like a rolling stone which we played at his funeral, really miss him so much 😢 😢
R.I.P broski I lost my dad on August 18th, so I understand
May your father rest in peace. 🙏
Sorry for loss, my mom passed away in March 1980 when I was 12 years old and my dad passed away in March 2000 I still think about them to this day.
Some people complain about Dylan's voice---but no one else could execute this song vocally as well as Dylan himself.
I had the urge to listen to this song and mistakenly went to Guns and Roses' version, had to come here to cleanse my soul.
