I feel honored to have been part of the 1960s hot wheels area I remember getting thees things for Christmas and all throughout my childhood life and I am still playing with them at age 61
Best is increasing your knowledge of Redlines through books, videos, and TRUSTED people... So many scammers out there. Can’t go by dates on base for real year made, cause many cars use the same mold years later... Best way to know a Redline is looking at near mint original cars, focusing on the paint. Spectraflame paint looks like a mirror finish, and is unforgettable. And if the wheels have a hole in the center, or you can see the axle in the center, it’s NOT a redline... Knowledge and Information IS POWER...especially in your wallet..!!!
Wheels aren’t a good point of reference for inexperienced collectors. Original 73-77 redlines featured open center wheels that are very similar to 90s reissues but jump right out at an experienced collector. 73s typically had open fronts and capped rears. Sometimes open centers all around….sometimes in rare cases capped all around depending on what was in the parts bin. 74-77 is typically open center on all 4 wheels. A few exceptions show up with earlier capped wheels or a combination…again depending on what was in the parts bin. Then there’s more recent re-issues that have closed centers like the original 68-72 wheels. Again, those will jump right out as being new along with everything else to someone who’s been around. Point is, Mattel used a variety of wheels on the original 68-77 redlines.
For the original 68-77 redlines...the quickest way for inexperienced collectors to weed out if it’s original or reissue is to look at the base. It’ll say Hong Kong or US. Anything else like Malaysia or China is reissue. Unless it’s something like a rear loader kit or a handfull of counterfeit 442 kits made years ago that copied the US stamping, you can be assured it’s at least an original production era redline. From there you’ll need to be learned enough to determine if it’s a restoration or not. Also, get yourself a mentor in this hobby. There’s still some forums kicking around full of old timers. Beware a lot of these Facebook groups. Most of that place is the Wild West. I’ve seen scams and fakes that were known about decades ago crop up on Facebook and bite many unsuspecting “experts”.
I know the Ford J-Car had an enamel white version in 1968 (partially because I have a few of them, it's one of the most common original RLs that I've found at thrift stores), I'm not sure if there were any other enamel exceptions that year off the top of my head. Mongoose and Snake were also enamel in 1970 but they still had stickers except for the headlights which were tampos.
Technically they did a blue enamel J-car also. I say technically because they took a small batch of the white enamel cars and painted over with spectra-flame blue. It gave them a light blue enamel look. It’s been claimed over the years that they did these as a promotion for the Indianapolis 500.
A Hot Wheels Redline is most of the HW cars I used to have back in the 70s! What a nidiot! I had Matchbox, Corgi, Dinky Spot-On, then I got interested in going to the pub and don't know where they all went. Doh! 🤦😅
That’s typically true. I’ve seen exceptions over the years though. I had a Bandit with capped rears. It wasn’t uncommon when 68 castings got carried over into the later years. Sometimes they just got what they got from the parts bin.

My first hot wheel was 1968 an white ford gt40 with red liners.
The Hong Kong beatnik bandit came with a steering wheel....since 68😉

There was also a dark green enamel version of the HK Custom Volkswagen...

Thank You just don't want people getting scammed
Please use a clip, or mount, your hands shake to much to see anything. Good video tho.
Thanks buddy
If it's put out by Mattel Hot Wheels isn't it a "Re Issue"?
I managed to find 2 redlines in Amazon, 150$ for both!
The beatnik bandit did not have cap wheels, the wheels are removable, cap wheels came in 69, and only the cap could come off
That’s typically true. I’ve seen exceptions over the years though. I had a Bandit with capped rears. It wasn’t uncommon when 68 castings got carried over into the later years. Sometimes they just got what they got from the parts bin.
