    Wow, that was one hell of an incident. I've been through a monster wreck back in the late 1990s. I won many Road Race national events wearing less than I should have . I know that you, spreading the word on safety suits, boots, gloves, etc... will save lives. As I get older, and I am preparing a drag car I will remember what you said here.
    I will make sure I am over protected. Lyle, I know you survived for a reason. The drag strip will be a better place for it.
    Cheers my friend,

    I have 3 dragsters that run 4.30-4.40 in the 1/8 mile and we do a lot of Big Money bracket racing. My sons and I wear SFI-15 suits, the best carbon fiber helmets money can buy, Hybrid Pro head/neck restraints, head sock, plus all of the other normal safety gear {gloves, shoes, arm restraints}. Routinely I see bracket racers, especially down South, jump into a 4 second dragster in shorts/sweatpants and a t-shirt. I just don't understand why some racers don't take their personal safety seriously. I've been told that guys don't like wearing the proper gear because it's too uncomfortable. I'm sure if you ask Lyle, not having his eyelids is much more uncomfortable. People say to me, you're only running 1/8 mile, what could happen? I have several racing acquaintances that will tell you through personal experience that you don't need the other 1/8 mile to fuck shit up. Control the controllables!

    Good on you, Lyle, for having the guts to tell other racers about your mistake(s). It takes a lot to admit when you screw up; you will save others lots of pain, and save some lives, as well.
    There's lots of ways cars can get you. All it takes is a moment's lapse in judgment. I spent a week in the hospital, and have the scars to remind me of a stupid mistake 40+ years ago.
    I was working on someone's Chevelle, and took it for a test drive, after tuning it up. I was driving it hard, and did a few launches, to see if I'd fixed the lean stumble. I had, but then the Chevelle overheated. I was close to a friend's parents' house, and when I pulled up, they were all outside, preping the house for paint.
    I jumped out to borrow their hose, and being used to the pressure-less cooling system in my '57 Chevy, I didn't even think about the Chevelle having a 'new' pressure style system. I reached out with my left hand, opened the cap, and instantly par-boiled my left side; wrist, to shoulder.
    Was I ever glad I had the hose in my right hand, running cold water. I still have the image in my brain of the skin on my arm; reminded me of steamed salmon, the way the skin hangs off it.
    I was about 4-5 miles from the hospital, which was on the opposite side of town. Being 18, and full of testosterone, I got the car cooled down, and (I thought), my arm pain under control, and told the buddy who was with me, 'Take me to the hospital'. He replied, 'My license is suspended for the second time. I'll lose it permanently if I drive.'
    So, I got in, and headed for the hospital. I got about 100 yards down the road, when the cold water wore off. I was driving, screaming and laying on the horn, all the way into town, through the middle of town, and to the hospital, while he was hanging out the window, yelling at people to get the eff out of the way.
    They were waiting for me, at the hospital, I remember getting out of the car, onto the gurney, and getting a shot. By the time we got into the ER, I was telling jokes, and flirting with the nurses. Sure glad my friend's mom had the foresight to call the hospital, and tell them I was on the way.
    All it takes is a second, if you make a mistake. I got lucky, it could have easily taken out an eye.

    During my families tenure racing a true Pro Mod, several things took great influence in the safety gear in our car. The first being a good friend of ours, fellow racer and track owner was severely burned in an accident. It wasn't a race but the clean up from a car blowing something up at the starting line and making an oil mess. After the mess was mostly clean, the starting line was re-prepped with VHT/methanol and rosin dust which is lit on fire to melt it it. The first go at it didn't fully set it up and after it appeared to have burned out, our buddy sloshed a bunch more methanol down. Well there must have been a teeny tiny bit left burning in a crack or maybe an ember somewhere because it flashed over the track surface and into the fuel jug which belched burning methanol upon ignition all over our friend. He was out of his fire suit at the time, just street clothes. He suffered a lot of 3rd degree burns because of this. It's the exact same fuel our pro mods consume gallons of each pass and pump at high pressure and flow rates. The oil system sits at 90psi at idle and a lot more down track. Lots of overdrive on the blower making 60-65psi of boost with a lot of atomized methanol in it. If something happens to these systems as Mr. Barnett has very unfortunately discovered, the consequences can be severe. My dad suffered a shop accident prior to our car being race ready that further solidified the choice to pay the price for full top fuel gear to race in. The helmet, suit, gloves, shoes, nitro boots, all of it including fire bottles for the engine and drivers compartment. He was welding on a project and a piece of metal moved while welding and it touched an aerosol paint can and we thing arc'd to ground through the can which melted a pinhole in it and ignited it into a blowtorch and in seconds received 2nd & 3rd degree burns on his arms in mere seconds. His skin and some underlying tissue dripped off his arms. No expense spared of fire equipment on our car to say the least.

      We’re all guilty of complacency but in Cleetus’ defense he does seem to at least take peoples criticism into consideration rather than just saying “it’s not going to happen to me”. I got in a bad wreck when I was 15 and fortunately despite breaking every bone in my face I survived and I’m ok today but my life would have been a lot different if I was wearing my seatbelt. My immediate family all started wearing theirs but even seeing me go through multiple reconstructive surgery’s there’s people in my extended family that have told me they’d rather be thrown out of a vehicle than wear theirs.

    What does the compression gloves do ?

    • @bretjjjohnson7942
      @bretjjjohnson7942 Před 2 lety +1

      If your still wondering and if nobody has answered your question yet. Not everyone has to wear compression garments after burns. Compression gloves, mask, and other compression garments. Are worn to help burn survivors control scar maturation, and they often improve the overall appearance. The scars that are forming are red, raised, and firm, called hypertrophic scars. Hypertrophic scars are painful and itchy. The tightness of the scar can limit movement when it’s over or near a joint surface. This can limit a person's functional ability. Because he has suffered hypertrophic scars on his hand. He will forever have to were compression gloves, for the rest of his life. To help with the pain from the scars. That his hands were left with after his burns healed.

    Why would you race that level of a car without a fire suppression system?

    • @bretjjjohnson7942
      @bretjjjohnson7942 Před 2 lety

      His car did have a fire suppression system in it at the time of the fire. You have to manually pull the fire systems in those cars. Fires start outside of the cars, there installed outside of the cars. There also dont work and aren't effective at speed. Also those cars aren't sealed up inside like a street car is. It wouldn't have helped or done any good pulling the fire system. At those speeds the suppression materal. Would have been sucked right threw and away from the car. Instead of stopping the source of the fire outside of the car. No disrespect but alot of people dont have a clue. About how those cars are built or how the systems are set up to work. Most people would say, he should have pulled it anyways I'm sure. But its easy for anyone to say. But nobody knows truly knows what they would have done. Unless they were put in his position inside that car at that time. You have a split second to make your decision on what to do when something bad is happening. His was to focus getting his car stopped. That was engulfed in flames at 180 mph. Instead of possibly crashing. So he wouldn't have been on fire, already burned, then adding on trying to get out of his burning car after a 180 mph crash. If he would have pulled the fire system at that speed. What ever vision he did have left to see were he was going. It would have been gone. Immediately after pulling the fire system. After it was all sucked threw the car dusting the inside of his car at 180 mph. Causing him to more than likely crash at the speed he was at. By the time he got the car stopped he was being burned, he was on fire inside that car and he just wanted to get out of it. Before he burned to death inside of it.
