Hi Joey! I had an Archer fish in a community tank that I trained to shoot crickets with deadly accuracy! He knew exactly where the only gap in the tank lid was, and when I was sitting within few meters he would shoot me to say “hey! Come feed me!”. He even trained my flame dwarf gourami to spit for food! The gourami could only spit a few cm into the air, but bless him he tried. The gourami even loved being pet and picked up.
This is amazing, pretty awesome they can spit that far. I have a large Goldfish that will make huge gulps at me to show me he's hungry but that's no where as cool as spitting lol.

I personally just let archers naturally figure out hunting. Having some simple branchwork over the tank, whether it be artificial(pvc) or natural. then just put some crickets and such there, and eventually they just start shooting them off
Very cool. I did the same with my archer. I would put a floating food stick on the edge of the center brace and they would spit at it and knock it down into the water. Soon after, it spit at me whenever I was in the room.
I have actually trained my dwarf African frogs I didnt mean to lol. Well I feed them with tongs. Making sure they get food. Now I have no choice but to feed them with the tongs. But now I can actually pet them and play with them. It turned out good. They are fun. All my fish are trained as well. They know when I tap on the lid they come over to get ready to eat. So I can get all my fish to the same corner and all bunch up. 3 different species of fish all in the same tank all huddled together almost like there schooling. But only if I tap on the lid lol
Joe how about you get a piece of acyrlic on the top front of the glass that you can easily attach and detach. Like an extension to the front panel going upwards, then you stick the food to the panel and they may start spitting at it, I saw this on Georgia Aquariums CZcams channel.
A couple of years ago we went for a sunset cruise on Lake Argyle in the far north of Western Australia. If you leaned over the side with a small piece of biscuit, the Archer Fish would shoot it off your finger with very good accuracy.
My archers used to do the same thing when I watched TV on the couch near their tank but would also spit at the cat when she slept in front of the room heater

Hi Joey. Long time viewer, thx for all the info over the years. I was in Dubai a few years ago and visited their biggest aquarium at Dubai Mall. They had an archer set up with targets 🎯 above the water. I believe they stuck flies to the targets for the archers to shoot at. Needless to say but when you said you were getting them I got excited lol. if I can find any vids I will share. Cheers!

Hey joey, i trained a varity of animals by now from chikens to tigers. If you want them to shoot it out of your hand i think it could be done. For now let them know that shooting means food, i think youre al ready doing this but if they shoot you feed them, then next step i would take is to approach them put your empty hand above the tank and wait for a second shot. Even if they mis or shoot te wrong way, reward them for it, then if they start shooting the hand reward it even more food or a variaty of treats, slowy stop rewarding random shots an only reward hand shots, if they shot your hand consitendly then start with holding food in your hand I think this is a good start but if you want more help or tricks you can always ask
My green spotted puffer used to do this while my back was turned sitting at my desk when he wanted food . He also would pickup things and knock the glass to get my attention . Fish train you sometimes haha
they are trying to comunicate that they are ready to eat by spiting on you they know that they dont need to hunt for food and that you are their food source they understand moor than you think
Would you be able to add some plants on the side so that the leave were over the water and put some food on it to see if they would try to knock it into the water?

I have 9 archer fish and they spit at me every morning when I am sitting down having coffee.
The ones we had in the 70s-80s would spit and hit the target.

Float a bottomless acrilic tank over them with intertwined branches and add bugs for them to shoot down.
