I've always liked rebels... Because these are the ones that tear up the old rule books and do their OWN thing! Einstein was another rebel... So was Feynman! And when I used to teach, I was always drawn to those students who had their own unique way of doing things. Squeaky clean and obedient students that simply followed the rules were... Nice... But were pretty forgettable by and large!

During our conversation, he asked me why I was pursuing my PhD (knowing that he didn't complete his under Hans Bethe at Cornell). This exact effect was first predicted in the late 19th century, and it was confirmed in the 20th. Our predictions have been frighteningly accurate, if a bit conservative. The evidence is absolutely overwhelming at this point. We have already been very skeptical, and it turns out that the people saying that CO2 causes global warming which will change the climate were right.

Why on earth does anyone consider Dyson "legendary"?
It's very difficult indeed to point to anything which Dyson got right, or anything he actually achieved, beyond taking notes for Feynman. I read his autobiography a few years ago, the only thing remarkable is Dyson's self-estimation. Most of his ideas were completely crackpot. See Hugo Barnacle's letter to the Guardian for some examples.
There are some funny interviews on youtube with Murray Gell-Mann discussing Dyson, worth looking up.

But it speaks for itself that the best you can offer for Dyson's legacy are a few bits of mathematics and fantasies like the "Dyson Sphere" or Project Orion (which is the same thing as the Helios propulsion system).

Climate scientists work with numerical models, and numerical modeling is not a hard science. Anyone can make numerical models spit out erroneous results if so inclined. Dyson was an expert on numerical models, and understood the dangers of manipulating numbers with a pre-conceived bias in the outcome.

Interesting story, it resonates because I'm interested in learning more science. Only that during the pandemic, I had already used physics as applied biotechnology to deal with the COVID. I haven't had any infections for over a decade and swear by it! With an understanding of the essential scientific method, I call my wildcard method that goes beyond the necessary through my own tacit experience that is thankfully relatively simple. So does that make me a rebel without an PHD too? Only that I am curious as I know we have what I call a the "green quantum fourth industrial revolution" which I have applied myself does the best of our western liberal "do-it-yourself"! Indeed, inner conviction that it is 50%+ complete strategy and tipping-point that is industrial and energy conscious that is certainly scientifically and economically literate, if you will!? Over and above this, I am sanguine that 100%+ will be reached! For I know this is about what I call the "statistically significant probability" that I discovered through make your own mistakes and learn your own lessons of which I cross-referenced with the best of the past for the best of the future!

Probably the most amazing fact ive ever heard about anyone is that Freeman Dyson at the age of 6 worked out how many atoms are in the sun. Now for anyone with knowledge of basic mathematics thats not a hard thing to do. Find the formula, find the average density of the sun, plug one into the other. Volume = 4/3Pi r^3. But for a 6 year old to get that is friggin amazing!

I just had an epiphany seeing all those books around him. Im an engineering student and I almost never use a physical textbook when seeking information. I always look online or watch youtube videos to learn. Its sad in a way, as there will be no physical record of my years of studying other than the notebooks and diploma.

Soon the notebooks and physical diploma will go away too. Many students use a laptop entirely, and we've already started using block-chain technology for diploma verification.
