  • Fox shooter Roy Lupton is expecting a bumper crop tonight. He is out in a customised Land Rover Discovery to make an impression on a fox population that is out of control. First shown in Fieldsports Britain episode 90, Roy reckons it's going to be a big night. How big, he does not yet know....

    Why shoot foxes?
    The British red fox is widespread across the whole of mainland Britain and Ireland. The best estimate of the current British fox population is 240,000 adults in spring, to which a production of 425,000 cubs is added annually. The fox has no natural predator and for the population to remain stable, 425,000 foxes must therefore die each year.
    Fox numbers need to be managed and controlled to prevent the predation of lambs, piglets reared outdoors, free range and domestic poultry. Foxes can also have a significant impact on vulnerable species of ground nesting birds such as black grouse, partridge, lapwing and curlew (Bealey, Green, Robson, Taylor & Winspear, 1999).
    In order to protect such species while they are breeding, conservators and gamekeepers aim to control fox numbers, particularly from late winter to early summer. Foxes are also controlled around pheasant and partridge rearing and release pens in late summer and autumn. Overall, the direct cost to UK agriculture from fox predation has been estimated at £12 million annually (UK Government figures)

      Ah, but does this video not illustrate the REDUNDANCY of packs of scenting hounds for the task of killing foxes? Given that it's possible to account for Reynard - or any other rural pest - HUMANELY using a high-powered rifle, what possible justification could there be for chasing him with a pack of dogs?

    Here in Arlington, VA (cross the river from D.C.) foxes are a rare sight. I go back about thirty-odd years here and rabbits moved in only recently. They are far bolder than squirrels. I simply cannot imagine foxes could be such a plague

  • @dmouland
    @dmouland Před 11 lety +1

    I assure you that pigeon and rabbit pie is actually pretty good, more like red wine sauce with a bit of stock mixed in though for the sauce. I would happily choose this over a chicken pie. mind the bits of lead shot though ;) .And the fun you have is not from killing the animals, but the suspense up to it, knowing that your providing yourself with a meal after it, knowing your doing a service for the land owner and the social activity of it when you go with friends. Beats going to the cinema

    Hi - carcases are rendered or buried - pelts are sold where there's a market for pelts. The least 'cruel' culling is probably with hounds - no chance of wounding and tends to take the weaker foxes - but shooting is the most effective

  • @dmouland
    @dmouland Před 11 lety +1

    It's a sad fact but we do infact get killed by the thousands, we have wars, we die of old age, we get diseases etc etc..so our population fluctuates. And an animal dying instantly and humanely is not cruelty, in the case of foxes it helps protect some of our wild bird species, some farmed species also. In the case of other animals such as the pigeon, we shoot for crop protection (i'm sure even you vegans eat cereals!), but they aren't put to waste! I love pigeon and cook with it regularly.

    The reason for changing the filter colour is that foxes will get use to one colour if lamped too much.. Another good trick is to change the call too.. Never use the same filter/call every time I vary twich every year! Seems to work shot 26 in three weeks and the crops ain't even cut yet ha

  • @Mako561
    @Mako561 Před 11 lety +1

    What difference does it make why one would want to improve the population of an animal? If someone were a wildlife photographer and wanted to improve the population of an animal, just to take pictures of them, then they don't really care about the animals do they?
    If there is an abundant amount of partridge, then the population will be less affected by sportsmen. It's very simple.

    Well i totally disagree with that. Most wildlife photographers tend to be ecologists aswell, your statement is wrong on so many levels. We do conserve nature to enjoy it, granted, but we do it also out of mutual respect. And to keep a natural biodiversity level. Sure if there are too many foxes for example pest control is needed if it's proven the foxes are predation and affecting native wild life.

    So hunting barerhanded + knife is something you regularly do? I put it to you that if you tried to hunt foxes by yourself with just a knife your sucess rate would be zero. Even primitive tribes that are experts at hunting would use traps and snares.
    Remembering that part of the reason to use modern equipment is to control pest species. If I hunted with primitive method my farm would be overrun with foxes rabbits foxes and pigs.

      You seriously think there would be a rabbit plague when you shoot that many foxes in ONE night. Last time I checked, rabbits allowed for natural predators to clean it up. Foxes would rather invade your chicken shed than hunt for rabbits.
