  • The last full blooded Yaghan, Cristina Calderón (1928-2022), makes a short but important appearance in Steve Elkins' feature documentary ECHOES OF THE INVISIBLE. This video is a portrait in memory of her people and the other lost tribes of Tierra del Fuego, the Selk'nam, and Kawésqar, who all settled on the final stretch of known terrestrial land at the southern tip of South America, on the edge of the Antarctic sea. The surreal photographs were taken by German missionary Martin Gusinde between 1919 and 1924. While his mission was ostensibly to convert the native peoples among whom he lived, Gusinde did just the opposite, eventually becoming one of the first Westerners ever to be initiated into the various sacred rites of the inhabitants of Tierra del Fuego.

Incredible pictures. Thanks for sharing. I live in Argentina but I've never heard of it. Do you know where I can find the e-book? I've been searching but I couldn't find it.
