Mandy is actually a very realistic pick me girl. She hates anything to do with what others are involved in until she finds out she likes it, and then it’s not a big deal. She’s a “feminist” who doesn’t know how to use a power tool and hates most things guys do until she likes a guy and then it’s not a big deal anymore 😂
Edit: y’all are still arguing on my post oh my gosh 😂💀

    • tofusuns
      tofusuns Před 5 měsíci +110

“A feminist that doesn’t know how to use a power tool” and so??? what’s the point of you pointing that out cuz it doesn’t have correlation whatsoever.. you can be a feminist without knowing how those tools work

    • Kelsey Baloney
Kelsey Baloney Před 5 měsíci +109

@tofusuns I guess I mean that most modern feminists talk down to men and treat them as less but they don’t know how to do a lot of basic things that are typically “manly” like using power tools. By typically, I mean statistically. And by “modern” I mean the ones of today. Feminism wasn’t about hating on men back then, that’s why I put the word in quotations. Because the “feminists” I see today are basically just whiny brats who hate men

    • EroPandaSennin
      EroPandaSennin Před 5 měsíci +101

@Kelsey Baloney And how many "feminists" have you actually met then? Because I can tell you that it still isn't about "hating men" unless you delve into places like the manosphere.
Do a lot of modern men know how to use/typical "manly stuff" either? Do they need to? What are the statistics on that?

    • NonDescript Y'all

Kinda bugs me how for someone smart enough to apply to Harvard, not once did she think about getting a letter of recommendation until she got waitlisted..
Like is it not common knowledge to get one when applying literally ANYWHERE?

    • Crazed Author
Crazed Author Před 3 měsíci +5

For me, at least, it was literally required. The best schools don't accept you unless you have at least two letters of recommendation.

    • Ducky Momo
Ducky Momo Před 3 měsíci +1

Not all schools require the same criteria
Also the letter of recommendation only works in Harvard because grahams father is from Harvard
      It wouldn’t work for Princeton

    • Amaya Williams
Amaya Williams Před 2 měsíci +3

i find it unrealistic because on common-app (the program most american teens use to apply to colleges) literally requires two letters of recommendation so everyone that applies to college in this country knows that they're highly valuable except disney i guess

    • Melissa Herrera
      Melissa Herrera Před 10 dny

The writers honestly don’t think through how college admissions actually work. The letter of recommendation was just a plot device to get her to meet her potential love interest. The writers who thought of this probably applied to college years ago and have no idea how weird it was that they wrote the story the way they did.

    Two popular movies.
Legally blonde and Mean girls. Both the many leads were polar opposites. One that loved all things pretty and pink, the other a total tom boy, they try to change who they are but realized that won't make them happy and go back to what they like. Both characters are strong female leads! Why does Hollywood seriously think that THIS female lead character in this movie would make me feel a connection to her? The whole review I thought, no wonder you only have one friend! Why would I wanna be around someone that is so bitter about everything!

Don't forget one of the worst causes of women being brats is the girl worshipping guys that support it. And I'm not even saying that sexism isn't problem. It's a major one but for both and can't be solved by one or the other.

The thing that frustrates me about characters like Mandy is that it takes away from real, actual social issues. I'm about as far left as they come, and I despise characters like that. They’re annoying and exhausting and they aren’t helping anyone change their mind or bring awareness. Instead, they make it easy, even morally right, to dismiss these issues. The annoying socially conscience girl is now one of writers' favourite character flaws to write for women lately, as if twitter was their only source for seeing what teen girls are like these days.
Characters like Mandy mellow by the end of the movie (good!) by caring less about those issues or even doing an about-turn by the end (not so good). I wish they would instead realise that the way they're going about it is counterproductive and find actual constructive ways to fight for their rights instead. Society has real-life battles its fighting for equality, and these depictions are damaging.
Yes, there are people like that out there, and they’re pretty universally hated by everyone no matter political views.

I will say its nice that she wants to go to a specific college in the movie and actually goes to that specific college for once. So often in these movies, you have characters throw away something they've been working towards their whole live at the last minute because it "isnt what they really wanted" which can sometimes be a nice lesson but sometimes its not.

I know I have no idea what is cool and what isn't. The 40+ Year olds need to actually talk to some kids about the lingo and the actions that are going on right now. Just remember though. You too are going to be just bopping along living your life and one day "5 seconds are going to pass" and you are going to be 40 as well. Take it easy on us. We arn't young - we know that but, we also arn't "old" - even though 40 seems old to you. We are doing our best to not wear Forever 21 but we arn't ready for the granny moomoo yet either. Alex, I'm old also enough to remember how different Disney Channel movies were back in the late 90s and early 2000s. Disney Channel was still in its Zoog Disney era and it was slowly transitioning out of being a family-aimed channel. Disney Channel did have a few movies that had mature moments or addresses serious topics before (like the ones you mentioned at 18:31) that would normally never happen again in modern DCOMs.
You also probably forgot how the original Under Wraps movie had a scene where the girl tells her (male) friends that she doesn't wear pajamas but goes to sleep in the buf and caused one boy to crash his bike. If you thought that part was crazy, Diane Keaton was also in a 90s Disney Channel movie that I remember called Northern Lights where her character CONSTANTLY SMOKES. The plot also deals with the death of her brother (that was actually shown on screen like with the beginning of Suzie Q!) and her nephew's mother was revealed to be mentally ill. So, yeah, Prom Pact almost feels like an older DCOM from the 90s-early 2000s.

I was kinda shocked by the more mature bits in this movie but I also think it’s kind of a welcome change. I’m 20 but thinking back to when I was in like middle school, there were only a limited number of shows and movies I could relate to so I just ended up watching either Disney channel shows bc that’s what I watched when I was younger and it was somewhat comforting even though I didn’t really find them all that funny or entertaining anymore, or I’d watch shows made for adults that I also couldn’t relate to even if I liked the storyline. All this to say that I think that’s who Disney is targeting with this, it’s a little too mature for kids under like 11 or 12 but teens would just make fun of it. It’s the exact amount of cringe for the 12-14 year old demographic and imo they’re probably a little content starved bc I know I was when I was their age. Maybe I’m wrong but I would have eaten this shit up

The minute Mandy started talking about how Prom-posals are stupid, even if I never went to my prom, HATED the idea of it, let people have fun. Quit being a sourpuss my gods.

Prom-posals are stupid thought. About the same cringe level as public proposals. And dont take me wrong here, i wont say anything against anyone liking those. I will most possibly shudder and facepalm behind their backs thought.

I am genuinely concerned that this is a Disney movie. There are so many sex and substance abuse references it's disturbing children of all ages will be able to watch this without their parents knowing what they're absorbing on a channel for children.

8:35 Alex, I was literally thinking that, at that exact moment, as a woman who hates "duh paytreearchy" she's awfully hung up on Harvard, which is established as the gateway to the establishment. Dang!

The most realistic part of the movie was the school councilor giving terrible advice and then acting like it was the main character's fault for not already having everything figured out lol

Besides the fact you know it didn’t say she wasn’t accepted to Harvard it said she was waitlisted meaning she was out in a wait list for the foreseeable future while they review the idk millions of applicants and is farther into being accepted than what it said she was earlier lmao

    • Which Cache
Which Cache Před 5 měsíci +139

Decided to consider the sociopolitical implications of a "promposal" on a lark. Perhaps the idea is that because there's an expectation of guys asking girls out for prom, Mandy's suggesting that the girls being asked out are seen as prizes to be won over while the guys doing the asking out are having their social standing decided by whether or not they can succeed at finding a partner for the local promenade?...
Obviously though, I think the actual answer is that the writers don't know how to write for a feminist character, and had her spout random buzzwords that don't connect with each other at the start of the movie to showcase her eventual turnaround by the end of the movie.

@CherryLee HartLey not really,Disney has a history of doing it sometimes,I don’t have anything wrong with it in my opinion it’s good rep but like at the same time it gets predictable slash repetitive to the point where it doesn’t seem genuine and it makes it seem more like they just snuck it in there to seem/feel good about themselves

This seems like a nice movie to watch, it could be painfully relatable in my highschool years, but now it would be just depressingly funny. Maybe I would give it a shot someday, but knowing that the MC befriends a popular cool and handsome guy who has a deep gentle personality, gives me my darkest flashbacks... At least Mandy had a "good ending" with that dude, I'd be happy for her.

OH ALSO- the reason for the turn in the 2010s was quite literally the creation of the “tween” category, it’s a very recent invention, literally created by the founder of justice when he realized 10-13 year old girls just followed the fads of older teens, and created a store that fit that untapped market, basically kids clothing that emulates teen “culture” and the same happened for media
