I love these tips and I totally agree about the music. I play soft classical or purely instrumental music in the background during school and I think it helps us all to focus and say calm(er). đ
Itâs amazing how that works!!! đ
My 6yr old is already asking me to let him do some of his work without me watching. It makes him so proud to do his work on his own.
Thatâs awesome!!! Thatâs how my son was also! When he was in 3rd grade, he did his entire weekâs math lessons in one day just bc he wanted to try! Some kids are just geared to âget âer done!â đ
My children start working independently at 3rd grade. My oldest are now in 4th and 7th and doing great independently leaving me plenty of time to work with my 1st grader and preschooler.
You are truly blessed!! That is fantastic and not every homeschool momâs experience, believe me! đ
My 8th grade daughter is independent with completing coursework, but still needs me to guide her, like do this, then that etc. I think I am going to take some tips here for 9th grade. I feel like we are in a stage of battling Lazy. But I find when I say, "It's easy to be lazy," it lights a fire under her and she wants to try harder. She is a good listener - takes my orders well and mostly without complaint, but it will be better for her to plan things out independently. Thanks for making these videos! It is so helpful!
Like I said, with my son, when I first started teaching him how to plan his week, I did it with him. But I hear you!!! I have battles with my 13 year old and Iâm not sure if sheâll ever be completely independent until sheâs 18!!! Every child is different. And some just need more help than others! đ
Great video! Iâm looking at the phonetic zoo đ
My older kids copy the Way I plan as well!!! This year my 2 kids in classes got a plum paper planner unbound for their Filofax!!! All my older kids are independent and Iâm working with my nephew so heâs on line with my twins!!! We love compass classroom and use their membership!!! All my kids have bible journals and my older kids have a nicer journal!!! My youngest has a sketchbook for her pictures!!! I love the idea of a drawer unit!!! We use parental controls for my kids iPhones!!!
Thatâs nice that your kids learned to plan from you. Youâll have all kinds of organizers when they grow up!! People who know how to organize and plan are great assets for a church!! đ (and a family!)
as usualâŠ.great tips! the apple watch idea is something to consider!
Yes! A great alternative to a phone!
Hi! I'm new to you. My oldest will be in eighth grade this year, and freaking out about high school led me to your channel.đ I live in OK where we have Mardel all over the place. I hope they expand and come closer to you eventually.
That would be awesome!!! It sounds like a fun store for teachers and homeschool moms!đ
I'm so glad you found me!
I enjoy your content so much! Iâm on my own in the whole homeschooling world since I have no friends that homeschool. I already homeschool my 6 year old, we both enjoy it and he is thriving! I have a 16 year old that wonât even consider it unfortunately. My 13 year old will be trying homeschooling this fall, Iâm gonna work with him over the summer too. Iâm hoping he loves it but Iâm nervous as I have no experience with older kids. Your content helps me so much with feeling overwhelmed. My 16 year old has an iPhone (for years now) and I totally regret it. Itâs been a battle to put it lightly. My 13 year old has a Gabb phone and I love it so much! He also has a Gabb watch. I do have Life360 on my older sons phone which is the only positive to his iPhone. Definitely learned a lot from my first child that I wont repeat with my other 3!
Thank you so much!!! đ„°
Yep! I hear you. Iâm
Very fortunate that my first child doesnât push too much. My 2nd childâŠâŠshe totally wants an iPhone. SighâŠ
I hope it works out for you and your 13 year old!!
Weâre half independent this year in 3rd grade. I give my daughter a 3 weeks at a glance spreadsheet that just has the number of checkboxes per subject for each week. She decides often to work ahead so she doesnât have as much on Fridays. đ Next year weâll do something similar.
Thatâs a great idea!!! Iâve thought about doing something similar for my middle schooler!! I might have to give it a try!
My highschooler uses myplaninplace planner and we love it. I tried that same one with my 6th grader. It he has learning disabilities and he can't work independently very well.
So does the planner help your 6th grader?? Iâll have to look into it for my 13 year old. Sheâs not quite the same as my high schooler. Iâll have to do things differently with her. đ
I'm teaching my upcoming 5th grader to be more independent. He can do his math and language arts but the others we need to work more on. I'm also teaching him using a planner. I'm gonna teach him to read my planner and to check it off. I originally was going to get a planner but I felt he wouldn't use it as much if it was just his. We'll see how it goes sharing my planner.
Good for you for training early. Some people are planner people. Some are not. I didnât become one until I was an adult. But my son took to his own right away. So, you never know!! đ
My oldest has ADHD and is on the spectrum. We have tried a desk calendar, but it didn't work, and other things just haven't worked. He cannot "plan" ahead. So I started to check lists for him in a spiral notebook and he has worked pretty well his 8th grade year. Although, with his special needs it's not easy and I always feel slightly let down when I know he gets distracted easily and lacks independence that I see from many other kids. He hates journaling.
Thatâs a similar approach to what I have to do with my middle child also. Iâm not sure if sheâll be a planner girl. But checklist definitely help!!
I am working with my 9 year old now to work independently. I have two little ones who need momâs help.
The earlier you start, the better! (Although itâs also kind of bittersweet! đ)
My going into 7th grader has ZERO independence. He just refuses to do things unless I hold him hostage at the table. I dream of days of independence. He is dyslexic and dysgraphic so I really feel this is the problem.
My middle Schooler is very similar! If you give a task, and then leave the table, youâre not sure if it will really get completed. I figureâŠBe patient, and give her the extra attention she needs. And I pray that some day, sheâll âtake the reigns.â One day, right??? One day theyâll have to be independent. Theyâll learn. Some kids just learn later than others. đ
What a bummer the quality of the planner has gone down- I've heard that from various different people. For Shormann Math does your son do a live class or the self-paced class? I love that the live class would hold my oldest accountable but it's a lot more expensive than the self-paced one đŹ Trying to weigh all the pros and cons!
My son does the self-paced class. đ
@Our HOMEschool Plan could you do a walk through of Shormann math and some functional tips maybe? My oldest is doing Shormann Pre-algebra and it's a struggle. Taking way too much time for her.
@@MichelleL83 Iâll see what happens when I have my son Help me with an end of the year review. But I doubt I will do a video solely on Shormann math.
If you are struggling, though, have you checked the site for help? I know they say that you can email for support and perhaps even get a meeting with Dr Shormann
Well i feel completely inadequate after seeing how well you have helped your son organize his school work. And completely lost at the same time.
No! Donât feel inadequate. You just start with the first thing! đ
AlsoâŠif you feel overwhelmed, just think about what your child may need to work independently in 1 day.
Theyâll need to know what work they need to do.
That may not be difficult if you are just following the curriculum how itâs laid out (I like to stretch ours out or skip things, which is why I customize his checklists)
And if there are special projects-help your child figure out how to plan it out over the weeks it may take.
The grading sheets came with the teacher materials so donât think I made those! I did not. i simply copied them and gave it to him.
Often it does seem overwhelming when you are looking at the forest! Just focus on a smaller chunk. And as you work through a week, you may find new ways of doing things that work for you.
I hope that helps!
@@OurHOMEschoolPlan it absolutely does. I'm one of those people who keeps check lists in my head. I organize everything mentally and when I write things down, it's in "mama code" as my kids call it. My daughter is always telling me "use your words mama, I'm not a mind reader." This struggle is real and this is why Emily isn't very confident to work entirely independent and she's at the end of her ninth grade year. I have been watching your organizing videos over and over and I'm learning a lot but it's like learning a new language.
I also think this is handicapping her confidence to be more independent
@@shelly8387 if it makes you feel any betterâŠ.I will have to do this all differently with my 8th grader. Sheâs not as independent as my oldest. So I get it. đ
