  • In this video I show how to install front struts on an Nissan Frontier / Xetrra. With some sockets and wrenches the project can be done by any DIY mechanic. I use OEM struts to replace the same struts off a 2012 Nissan Frontier. The struts come fully loaded and there was no need to have a spring compressor or assemble of parts.
    Safely jack up the front end so that both wheels are off the ground.
    Place a jack under the knuckle assembly.
    Remove the sway bar end link bolts and push the bar out of the way.
    Remove the bottom strut nut.
    Remove the top nuts from strut.
    Remove the bottom strut bolt.
    Remove jack under the knuckle.
    Uninstall the strut.
    Reassemble in the reverse order with the new strut.
    The torque specs are:
    Top nuts: 20 ft/lbs
    Bottom nut: 155 ft/lbs
    Spay Bar nuts: 35ft/lbs
    Tools Required:
    14mm, 19mm, 17mm sockets
    A 19mm wrench
    Air ratchet or hand ratchet
    Jack stands and jack
    Rust remover and parts cleaner

      Been a year or so since I did this, but I think theres an arrow( or some marking) on top pointing to a mounting stud that needed to be aligned with uca mark or visa-versa…..? Maybe I’m misremembering as I did a lot of replacement parts to the front suspension(Front end in general), and the rear for that matter ….but i think it was stressed to me to make sure not to align incorrectly ( have marks out of alignment ) as It would / could cause issue(s) …. I’m sure you probably know better than I , but in case you did align mark and just didnt video it ( slipped mind or whatever ) I thought it worth mentioning ….if I’m mistaken or confusing, two different repairs…..then oops ,sorry lol

      I hear you. Michigan is a rust hole.

      I don't think there were any alignment marks on the top hat of the strut and if you are doing like for like (no lift only stock) there are no adjustments that happen for the strut replacement as there are no other shims or bolts adjustments you can do. Those adjustments happen in the lower control arm.
      Thanks for the heads-up and stopping by and commenting.

    Normally a strut has a set height and not changeable a coilover looks the same but is designed more for trucks and allows for different springs to be used to affect height and ride.

    I wonder if this would be the same process for a 2023 Pro4x frontier

      @autoxadvice4159  Před rokem +1

      Though I haven't confirmed, but i do know that allot of the underpinnings of the old frontier are under the new frontier. Id imagine that this should still be close to the same.
      Let me know what you find out.

      Whenever anyone asks for torque specs or other very detailed information about engine, emissions, suspension, etc I tell them to head over to nicoclub.com and download the Nissan service manual. It has everything about the truck in the manual and a whole lot more.

    I have a 6" RC lift on my frontier.. I hear people say All Dogs Offroad vs RC. Which would you recommend?

    • @autoxadvice4159
      @autoxadvice4159  Před 2 lety

      Are you unhappy with the RC 6in lift? If it's working for you then I'd keep it.
      If it's not then I'd talk to ADO and get whatever isn't working fixed. They have great customer service and reasonable prices. They will set you up.

      Probably about 1hr if I wasn't making the video. I didn't have any rusted on bolts and everything came off without much effort.

      Use a silicon to lube the rubber bushings on the inside of the bushings.

    Which oem brand did you use?, I am having trouble deciding quality vs price

    • @autoxadvice4159
      @autoxadvice4159  Před 2 lety

      I was in a situation where these OEMs came up as used and i bought them.
      Now with that said I am also looking for a better strut than just these OEMs and made decide to do something later on.
      This video came about as I was chasing a front end noise that is somewhat still happening but not as bad and that video will come out later (i hope to track down that left over noise 😄).
      To answer your question outright. The OEM struts can get you 60k or more where some of the cheaper aftermarket may not get you the same miles or the same quality ride. With oem i usually know what I'm get, aftermarket can "sometimes" be a gamble.

    My frontier is rear wheel drive and not 4x4 Is there a difference in the parts ?

    • @autoxadvice4159
      @autoxadvice4159  Před 2 lety +2

      I haven't 100% verified this but reading up on it and depending who you order from the spring rate would be different. Different to carry the 4wd components over 2wd. You would be ok getting 4wd strut but maybe a firmer ride but using a 2wd strut in a 4wc may cause the front to sit lower and bounce a bit more.
      Hope that helps.

      Monroe does have different parts for 2wd vs 4wd

      No you don't have to. May give you a bit more wiggle room with the wrenches for the upper bolts.
