Odesa pulls down Catherine the Great statue to remove Russian Empress monument

- The monument featured Russia’s most famous Empress at its centre, alongside her companions José de Ribas, François Sainte de Wollant, Platon Zubov and Grigory Potemkin.
It was originally built in 1900, but taken down in 1920 following the Russian Revolution and Civil War. It was restored in 2007.
However, following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February, citizens of Odesa voted in a survey for its removal. It will be moved to Odesa Fine Arts Museum

Catherine II, with her rescript of 1794, initiated the construction of the city (in the article Odessa it is written that the city used to have a different name, so they renamed it, and did not start building it) and the port. As a thank you, in 1900, the inhabitants of Odessa erected a monument to Catherine and her associates, whose efforts founded the port and the city. The opening of the monument took place on May 6, 1900 and was timed to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the death of A.V. Suvorov. The monument was erected on the square of the same name, which has the shape of a triangle.

To think this is anything but historical spite and ignorance and modern politics aimed to please the west is truly ignorant. I don't support Russia in any way shape or form, but this act of historical vandalism is shameful.
It's absolutely necessary, since every symbol that can be associated with Russia, will be blown out of proportion in the Russian propaganda in order to manipulate the local population. In this context somebody who renamed a city and made some political decisions to boost it's meaning gets turned into the founder. From there it's just one step to running around chanting how Odesa is a Russian city cause imperial Russia has founded it.
