MREs and Memories
To celebrate Veterans' Day, I put on my dad's old Army field jacket and went out to the woods to eat a pre-packaged U.S. military ration, aka an MRE! I have never had one of these before, so I didn't know wth I was doing...but I figure it out as I go along. Also while eating, I reminisce on some of my experiences growing up on an Army base in Germany.

I found this MRE meal with Sarah very moving. Simple, honest and moving. Respect to all Veterans, where ever and when ever they served. Peace to all...
I commend you for being so conscientious about doing this is super cool to honor our military personnel on this day I think you're a sweetheart for doing this thank you Sarah Jane Woodall you're a good person thank you wonderhussy
ditto
Thanks!
You look pretty hot in that army uniform 3 years ago or so I saw your videos for the first time and I replied and said you were like a breath of fresh air you still are I'm depressed you kind of bring me out of it thank you for being you
MRE's are way better than C-Rations. I'm sorry about your father and happy that you turned into such a charming free spirit!
Thank you for being so forthright with your personal stories. It's refreshing to find a straightforward, open, beautiful soul on CZcams for a change. Thank you for sharing your adventures with us!
Patricia Wells
I was thinking the same. She is a very candid person and pretty brave to share her personal stories.
Probably the best MRE video ever recorded. Center frame a loving daughter having a real conversation with her dad. I'm pretty sure he would be watching and sending all his best positive vibes back your way!
The Chiclets are meant to act as a sort of “toothbrush” after you eat the MRE........actually works, lol.
Some meals came with a mini Tabasco bottle...a highly valued item!
MRE-Massive Rectal Explosion😂
USMC ‘84-‘92
Thank you for saluting those in the military past and present. My dad was WW II prisoner of war and myself Vietnam vet. You are awesome.
Hi Sarah. I bought all of the MREs that I sent you and Larry off of eBay. Probably several hundred people selling them on there. Great review by the way. Have a great day lady 😊
Thanks for supplying the MREs it was a cool idea.
He he you're also and here. Nice))
@@VladisRed yes, been watching for a long time. How are you my friend?
@@tracyphillips3325 I'm fine but very boring recently and nothing new now
@@VladisRed Glad to hear you are doing well. Maybe something interesting and fun will happen for you soon.
Thanks for doing this video and honoring our all our Vets including your Dad. You could have sat home in a nice warm house and ordered in a pizza but, you chose to go out of your way instead. I'm sure it was tough sharing your story about your father and your childhood but, you handled it with love and respect. God Bless you and your family and thanks again for remembering us Vets.
At a time when everyone is doing MRE tasting videos, no one does them like Wonderhussy!!!! Thanks, girl!
you are a very deep and interesting person, I enjoy your life story in that the good and the bad made you the person you are today.... Thank you keep making videos!
Thank You for honoring our vet's. When I was a kid in the 60's my dad retired out of the Army at Ft.Hood Texas. He worked on base for a few years. He would bring home a lot of the Korean War MRE's . They were full of good stuff .Cigarettes', candy, and my favorite a round coco. Great video
Those were C & K rations
Thank you for honoring veterans day, by defacto sharing a meal with the fellers in the field . Thank you also for trusting us with a slice of your life , precious memories ( like EVERYONE has ) both good and bad........ I have to think your father would be very proud of you !!!!!!!!
Thanks for sharing your memories of your dad.
First class way to celebrate Veterans Day. Brings back memories of Kagnew Station a half century ago. C rats were pretty good, esp. peaches. You are one cool Hussy.
Thank you for honoring us veterans on our special day, Sarah. I'm glad that you understand how mental illness (including bi-polar disorder) often leads to us doing things we wouldn't do if we were well. I'm sorry that you lost your father in this way, and know that you still miss him. Like you, I lived in Germany near Heidelberg for several years while in the service, and have such fond memories of life both on and off base. Those experiences have contributed greatly to the person I have become. All the best to you, friend.
Think about it, these little skinny 'kids' volunteer to go. God bless the vets, one and all!
Terry Graham maybe drafted! My husband was.
Amazing how many of so called "Patriots" these days dodged the draft when it was their chance to serve our country....
@@ttlsteve9235 i served 1964 to 1968. Navy.2 Wes pac cruises plane guarding the carrier. Etc. I had a classmate who was in ROTC but for some reason went to canada and lived there till he died years ago. I Always thought maybe the news reports scared him so that he couldn't follow through. He was pretty timid. I kinda understood.
Getting killed and kiling for what ? Out of patriotism , or misled by politicians
Paul S We will always be at war because war is sooo profitable, a large chunk of our economy depends on war. Ex-President Eisenhower warned us about the “military-industrial complex”.
My Dad kept WWll sea rations in the trunk of our 1950 Pontiac till about the 60s. You really had to be hungry to eat them.
He was hard core lifer, 1937 to 1957. RIP Dad!
Great to see someone wearing actual “old school” olive drab. We were issued “c” & “k” rats. You are correct. Mres did not exist during that time. Someone that size would have been a tunnel rat candidate 🙁. Thanks for the video.
Just discovered your channel a few weeks ago. This is a great review and tribute to all Vets. Retired AF, 69 to 2005, both active and reserve. Had C rations in Vietnam. Still have a couple P38s used to open tins. Had MREs first and second Gulf wars. Some MRE meals have better heaters than others. Remember, govt buys from cheapest bidder that meets minimum requirements. Adding the salt pack to heater improves higher heating.
Really sorry to hear about your Dad. Unfortunately many Vets end their lives, some from PTSD, others because they can't handle getting back into civilian life after the service. Thank you for honoring allVets.
I really enjoyed this video Sarah. Most informative but most importantly was the personal connection and sharing where you came from and some of your very personal history. Thank you Miss Sarah!🧡😘
Thank you Dad for his service.
My commemoration. My grandfather spent time in a psychiatric hospital in the 60s because of WWI. It was never discussed, and it should be. PTSD.
Pop also got married late in life, 37, which I'm sure had something to do with his PTSD. The only thing Pop really said, in my family folklore, was when he was in his last months. He was delirious in his bedroom in bed. He saw shadows. Mom went in to see how he was doing. He said to Mom, "Bett this is no fit place for you." Mom asked him where he thought he was. Pop said the Pyramids. That might be the only time he spoke of WWI?
Sgt. Alexander Marshall Hudson, Royal Newfoundland Regiment, 962, gave his life, his mental health, so the rest of us could live a better life. RIP 1894-1977, and my Grandmother Annie who loved and cared for him.
Excellent video. One of your best.
I teared up when you said the jacket was your dad’s. This was a very special video. Thank you.
That was a honorable video! Thank you for being so open, and honest, about your experiences! Keep up the great work and stay safe, always! Much respect to you!🧧🌺🌅🤙
Thanks for sharing your family history. Blessings to you and your sister
You are soooo amazing! I've never been so entertained by someone opening a freeze dried meal - I'm tickled pink! You are sooo perceptive! You are a woman after my own heart - I bet you love airline food too, right!? RIGHT!? I knew it!!! Well whatever school that was in Germany must have been EXCELLENT because you are a verbal genius. You don't like Taster's Choice!? Sacrilege!!! But I won't hold that against you - you're still astonishing.
I was raised in the Air Force...my Dad served 20 years....I would not trade my military up bringing for anything! We loved getting C-rations...we thought they were a delicacy. Great tribute to Veterans Day....you keep it real .Thanks.
After sharing some of your personal history about you and your family I feel like I know you a little bit more as a person and not just some anonymous internet personality.Thank you.
Another interesting video Sarah Jane...Thanks for your review of the MRE and sharing about your dad. You are a special genuine person to share so much of your life, curiosity of our planet and the responsibility you show towards it. Thank You.
My brother stepped out in front of a train also, sorry to hear about your Dad.
I really like your videos and I like your level-headed ways of thinking a lot of women wouldn't even attempt to do the things you do and I admire that keep it up
The field jacket you're wearing was actually before MRE's were produced. C rations were used then. Your hat though is MRE relevant.
She did say he Dad brought home C rations.
Your beauty and inner strength is such a great example for us all. No whining, no victim hood just matter of fact. Thanks for what you do, I always enjoy your vids.
I Sarah, Thank you for doing a really cool tribute to us Vets! I had "Sea Rations" when I was in! The MRE's came a bit later! Their a lot like any pre-made "TV Dinners" we used to have when we were all kids! Lol! Lots of Sodium! Anyway, as you found out, their NOT BAD However! :) Not bad at all! :) Sorry about your Father! My Father was Terminal for almost 6 years and died this past April 1st. I organized a Military Memorial for him! He first went in during the 1950's till the late 1970's. I was in during the Cold War in the 80's with the first Persian Gulf War! Great Video! :) Keep up the Great work! :)
I have such love for you Sara . You are another level . I don't know if anyone could honor life and live it any better then you are . Thanks for sharing
I was far more entertained and informed than I though possible for 25 mins. Strong Work.
Hahaha! One of the cutest videos you've posted. You made this vet happy. Tres charmant! Thank You.
I appreciated you filling in on your background story
knew you have said previously being military brat
do overall enjoy watching you
what a fun video this is,leave it to you Sarah to make a bland mre look dilicious, btw you look really nice in that clothing you may start a new trend, sorry bout your father darling its really brave of you to deal with it the way you do,thats what makes you "you"we love you just the way you are,as always please take care and stay blessed!
Your hair is down...
Looking good. 😉
The napkins are for use the morning after! Unless you carry it by the roll.
Remember the military is a reflection of society. I served 22 years.
Thank you for your service to your country
As I also mentioned often, it's not the service members that make the policies to fight wars but the politicians. If you are unhappy with what's happening blame the politicians, not the service members.
Thanks for your positive thoughts of your dad and wearing his jacket.
Excellent channel skills.
Good job Private! You did your Dad proud.
Well WH you gone snd done it..a whole vid from one set up, with more emotion than sweat, more reminiscing than reveling. But sharing that quiet moment with us and opening your past like that is very heartwarming. Thank you for that. Your father sounds like a tortured soul. My mother was too. But she just moved on with life after the break. As did my step mother, with a new identity and sexuality..kind of seemed like she was dead to us but her life moved on. Sometimes I think that can be even more of a challenge.
Life can be sad but you always cheer me up even with melancholy subjects.
Well done WH .... well done. TY
congrats sarah, you're the first youtuber i've seen that actually read the heater instructions and added the correct amount of water to the heater. the heater bag can hold 2 pouches of food with the heater element between the pouches, it's a tight fit but it works. the reason matches are included is because sometimes the troops are issued supplemental items like fuel tablets in cold weather for heating water in their issued canteen cups, or they might need to start a fire in an emergency. the reason for the heavy amount of packaging material is because a full, sealed case of mre's is designed to be air-dropped from 1500 feet without parachutes and still survive.
Much respect Gorgeous for celebrating your Dad (thanks for His service) and celebrating Veterans Day properly with the BDU's from different eras! Your thoughts on the guys pants who you were wearing were a reminder why we should all celebrate our US Military Veterans. Freedom is NOT FREE!!! Many fine young people on both sides pay whenever our Military is engaged around the World. Thank you for sharing! Classy!!!
One of your best postings ever! You have a heart as well as a sharp mind. Thanks so much for sharing.

2:51They needed some little guys in Vietnam to go into the tunnels, kind of like being an armed badger.
Badgers are awesome.
Terebrate : I would of been one of those guys being short and small when I was in my teens. Today I would be used as a drain stopper. Lol
@@tazmod7272 Same here. Lucky for me that I had a rather high draft lottery number in the early 70s.
Terebrate : I was 1-A and had my physical. They stopped drafting my year below my draft number.
@@tazmod7272 I'm guessing then that you were glad not to get called-up. I certainly was relieved to have had a pretty high number.
Very well done Sarah. Misty parts too. Those heaters would make great hand warmers if needed.
Good for you, remembering your father on Veterans Day.
Fun episode WH! My Father gave me his WWll B~17 Bombardier jacket. Based in Kettering England. He bombed the hell out of the Germans to keep us free! I still have it. Priceless! Keep going! I love your adventures!
I loved growing up in the military. I worked for them as a civilian til i was 35 now i am working for the state.
I didn’t know you could work for the military as a civilian that’s the first I’ve heard of that
Very nice to see Sarah and to honor the military personel 👌👍
You made that army costume look good. Your hair dropping off your shoulders was cute as well. Thank you for sharing your lunch with us
Thank you for not bashing our military and country! Its great to see gals like you that love life and liberty. So many selfish and lost souls these days! God bless and carry on!
It's TRUE, I was in the Marine corps, it's TRUE you can not buy them, and yes they did have the MRE, I joined in 1983. P38 is a tool to open old see rats.
It's C Rations for canned.
Just in case you didn't know the p38 can opener can be still be bought at academy sports two for a buck last time I bought them glad I bought em to they're awesome
@@GeorgiaRidgerunner Wife and I both carry a P38 on our key chains. They come in handy from time to time.
The P38 tool was also referred to as a “ John Wayne”
@@anthonylagunas6737 I was just trying to be funny about sea rats instead of C rations, also I hear mix stores, that you can now buy the MREs now.
When MRE's first came out, you had to "knife" your way into the plastic to get it open, lol. That entrée lays on top of the heater element, add the water and lean it more at a angle so the water will touch most of the heater element. Done properly, that sucker will get really hot to handle. Does a good job. Those matches are water proof, so very useful for whatever you need.
Before the heater element appeared on the scene, we use to either put the entrée bag on the hot engine of our vehicle. If not available, we dug a small hole in the ground, laid 2 tent pegs across the top, put the entrée bag on top of that. We then put fuel tablets (1 or 2 ) in the hole underneath the bag and lit them. WOW, now that got hot!!!
Thanks for the memory, Sarah....hugs!!!
Brought back good memories, Army 1976-1979
I entered the military in 1980 and retired in 2000. We had "C" Rations in the beginning and they were creating the first MRE's. They were dehydrated; Dehydrated Meat and fruit. They SUCKED! Soldiers complained enormously. They then came out with the MRE's you have today with nothing dehydrated. They weren't too bad. They have improved them considerably over time. Thank you for honoring the Vets.
You always have interesting content. I enjoy your channel.
Post a link for purchasing your calendar when available!!!
Enjoy
You can buy MREs. My hunting partner's brother showed up at deer camp one year. He brought some MREs. We had pork chops on the side of a hill while hunting the next morning. They were actually pretty good.
Steve1989 samples and eats old mre's and comments on them, the oldest he ate was over 100 years, guys got and iron stomach
Haven't been getting notifications for some reason, missed a bunch of your stuff so I'm playing catch-up. This one hit home. You're sweet, thanks.
Hey Hussy,
About the MREs. On a mission soldiers carry 1 MRE per day. It's really cool that you made this video, it gives some idea of what our people in uniform do.
About the pants. They may not have fit the guy that sent them so he sent them to you. Remember there are a lot of women in the military now also.
Love your videos.
Keep on keeping on!
Hi, former Marine here, the trick to MRE's is to have plenty of condiments to add to them. And a squad of Marines to trade parts with, Tabasco ect.. During the last hurricane I ate the Mountain House camping foods and they are quite tasty.
MRE LOL Stands for “ Meals Refused by Enemy” 😎
Still looks better than the "c-rats" that we ate in the early 70s!
My husband was an 18 year old college freshman when he was drafted for Viet Nam. He was 19 and about 135 lbs when he shipped out. He didn't have MRE's. Coincidentally he is close friends with a family who own a good processing and packaging company and their company probably made those MRE's. Great video!
great show you get so real sometimes
Hi Sarah been a subscriber for years now very rarely comment. enjoy your channel never missing any of your stuff. but this one was so nice, god bless you , the military and god bless america.
Well done! Tracy is extremely generous!
You are such a Beautiful young lady. I'm so sorry that your dad ended his life but I'm grateful that you shared it with all of us. God Bless you for the respect you are showing to all the Veterans. Big hugs Sarah Jane Woodall. I'm a big fan of Wonderhussy
When I was stationed on Guam, late eighties, they sold MREs in the commissary. Bought them by the case for our "typhoon" cupboard. (Recommended two weeks × 5 people)
Worse came to worse, you could catch, cook and eat a few brown snakes.
Beautiful Downtown Agana where America's day begins, (heard that every day for three months on the radio). I was there for the Vietnam evacuation when Saigon fell. I guess they since changed the name of the town. The roads then were made from coral and slippery when wet was not an exaggeration. It rained so hard it would hurt your head.
@@RichardOlsonar15 don't eat them"brown snakes"... they taste bad... and they usually dissolved during the cooking process... lol
I served in the US Marines and I'm American Mexican. Yes they sale MREs at gun shows and yes we had MREs in the 80's.add water to the heating element. Semper Fi.
That was a great ceremony. Hope it catches on.
US Army from 1980-1984. C rats is what we had-and man did they suck, LOL. We used to bring our own food in our tank so we could actually eat!
When you're out in the field that's not a bad meal 😇👨🍳
Four days "without," & she`d FIGHT for that TEPID chili & coffee...
@eclemensen Sounds like you`ve never tasted ((Pampa)) instant coffee--- definitely The World`s Worst !
One commenter said that MREs have been around since the 70s but it is not 100% true . I am probably close to the same age as your father as I entered the service at the very end of Vietnam December 7 1974. At that time we ate C rations during Basic training but the guys that actually saw combat ate K rations but these were in a plain old square box and the perishable food was in cans so you always needed a P38 can opener, it was really good ! You got spaghetti and meatballs, beef Ravioli, corned beef and cabbage then a round tin with like really good crackers with a sweet mustard honey sauce like you get at a restaurant , then a super high calorie brownie like your grandma would make that also was in a round tin container, no condiments though you had to carry that in your field pack. None of it had to be cooked you eat right out of the can. Thank you for honoring the veterans your a real stand up girl.
I was given a duffel bag full of MREs. My oldest son scarfed them down! Try some Black Rifle coffee. They have some pretty good blends.
☮️ One of your best videos ! Like all your videos ,but this was different and FUN 💯
It is probably in French so the Canadian military can use them as is.
Oui
French-Canadian means those MRE's were earmarked for NATO assigned troops.
Same kinda MRE's my husband gets over here at ol Fort Irwin. My kids love when he brings home extras from the feild (they forage for the candy and desserts). Jalapeno cheese spread and tortillas is my fav delicacy. Anyhoo, it's funny because many of these young soldiers get a tattoo of the "rock or something". I'm glad you caught the humor and figured you'd point it out. ✌️
Sorry about your Dad. It is never easy.
So sorry to hear about your dad in any event you turned out a real gem
You're a trip Sarah Jane, but it's a darned fun ride! Thanks for sharing. = )
Great video! MREs are a step up from the old C and K rations of the 60's and 70's. Stay Safe!!!
You look Great in Camo girl !
So sad that your dad took his own life at age 56. Your dad never really left you if you still carry him in your heart! I really
liked your tribute to those who had to eat rations like these in the service of our country. Nice that you have his old Army
jacket from way back then!
Wow those rations have really come a long way! The last time I ate one I had to add hot water to it myself. That's really neat that they have them where you don't have to add hot water now. It is interesting that they give matches with the ration, because they used to give a cigarette with them! That's what the matches were for, like you said. (or for fires I suppose) I guess it's bring your own cigarettes now. They also used to give out little miniature bottles of Tabasco sauce! Hey ... really sorry about your dad btw, ... In 2013 my brother did the same thing. It's hard to explain what that does to you. Anyway, love your videos!
Yah... unfortunately for me... my urine was usually just room temperature so I very seldom had a hot meal... water was hard to get... more less"hot water"... lol
Good morning Sarah. I have lived in Ukiah since 1973 and graduated from Ukiah High School in '78. I have several MRE dinners but have never tried one. Guess I'm going to have to try one now!! TY for sharing.
In the Marine Corp they used them as tunnel rats. They would be sent down into the tunnels to hunt for the VC, Viet Cong. I was in Vietnam 72 to 73 still wearing the old green uniform.
for those unfamiliar with tunnel warfare, read THE TUNNELS OF CHU CHI
I worked with two guys years ago that went in for body counts after the tunnels were burned......... terrible thing.
