Kings and Generals' historical animated documentary series covering the Pacific War week by week continues. Mastermind of the Pearl Harbor attack, Admiral Yamamoto, knew that Japan needed some time to prepare a new set of defenses if the Empire hoped to survive. Thus, he would set forth to launch a massive air offensive against the Allied positions in the South Pacific. Join us as Japan tries to counter-attack in Yamamoto’s last offensive: Operation I-Go.

This episode in a nutshell
Part of the problem is that as the war went on and the quality of pilots declined, their ability to be situationally aware of their targets also decreased. Lesser trained recruits focus much more on the basic operation of their craft rather than trusting training and muscle memory so they can focus on the objectives.
As a result, the untrained pilots tended to develop a sort of tunnel vision and became less aware of if they were actually completing their objectives, so they gave optimistic reports to their superiors to not lose face
Compare it to strikes against midway where pilots reported they would need one more strike wave against midway to knock out the island defenses or pearl harbor where the pilots truthfully reported no carriers were hit
I feel bad for Ozawa. Clearly an intelligent guy stuck with playing the terrible hand he was dealt.
He obviously saw the writing in the wall here. Many of the Carrier Pilots lost here would have been invaluable in Phillippine Sea AND Leyte. Good tactical plans carried OUT with inadequate resources.
You could say that about a lot of Axis officers.

Honestly one of the best and most underrated Japanese admirals.
My grandfather became enlisted around this time in the war. So, the lack of the usual music at the beginning was nice timing to me. I got interested in this series because of this service and even tried to track down his old military records, but unfortunately they were lost in a fire by the National Archives. Looking forward to hearing about the campaigns he was a part of going forward.

Mounting a continual air attack in the region was probably impossible for the Japanese: even assuming they had enough supplies to do so, flying in the region was extremely stressful because of the weather conditions, so the pilots would continually become less effective with time.
Such stress has very real effects: pilots suffering from stress during WW1 were noted to have not only become less capable, but the stress often led to pilots being unable to agree on what had even occurred in the air when making reports. The US addressed such issues by rotating pilots out when they could; the Japanese avoided doing so, which might help explain why the Japanese pilots made such wildly exaggerated reports, and why they had issues making use of their numbers.

Mis-reporting, for whatever reason, was common in all nations, but the japanese excelled at it. It's stunning how many, and how _big_ , their mistakes were. They literally made stuff up...
Their culture was still heavily-influenced by the old Samurai code. Failure was supposed to result in your death. Anything less than victory was dishonorable. And the schism between the IJA and the IJN was so extreme that the IJN sort of failed to tell the IJA that they had lost the 4 carriers at Midway. The IJA literally was creating battle plans based on the support of those carriers for almost a year before they found out they were lost. Under those circumstances, telling the truth about less than successful results just doesn't seem likely. What a terrible way to conduct a war.
Regardless of what happen. Japan wanted an Empire like any other in it's age, what separate them from the west was not the cunning slyness of the Europeans but the Atrocious barbarism their blood held to this day, denying it's existence.
'Face Saving' is still common in many Asian cultures. Makes hard to admit mistakes and take responsibility

The thing is, even if they were right, how much time would that have really bough the Japanese? A few more months at best? What could they have done in that time to change the strategic situation?
And that really underscores how deeply screwed the Japanese were.
HMNZN Moa was a mine sweeper of just 600 tons. Not a Corvette. She, and her sister ship Kiwi, were responsible for the sinking of the Japanese submarine I 7. Quite a feat for such little boats that had hardly any firepower. 1 × 4-inch gun, 1 × QF 2-pounder naval gun, 1 × twin Lewis, 40-42 depth charges.

One of the understated reasons for the poor showing in the I-Go attacks was brought up by this show, the poor quality of the Japanese Aircrews. So many had been lost in the past year, and they could not be replaced. If anyone wants to learn more see my work FATAL FLAWS Book 1 1914-1945 A detailed 700 page history of that time.
The Allied pilots didn't do much better due to being green.

Yamamoto's strategy was sound, but the execution failed at lower levels and he was blissfully unaware of it. That's why it's better to have honest, even if incompetent subordinates than dishonest ones...

It seems that number one lesson from the exaggerated casualty figures of the enemy and the personal cult of bravery and self-sacrifice is: You do not learn and teach others about the mistakes commited, that can be avoided in the future. So no wonder some officers in IJN & IJA did not want to accept Japan's surrender in 1945, how can you lose a war if you bravely won all the individual battles? Which brings me to the parallels between WWII and a war still going on today in Ukraine... I believe private Conscriptovich and Colonel Nepotisov are making similar reports to Moscow about their gains.

That's really true, I guess the idea is for generals to save face in front of their commanders, even at the cost of the enemy knocking at their gates
Thousands and thousands of soldiers in the Japanese armed forces kept lying to their commanders about how battles went on, it's no wonder they thought they were winning. Just goes to show how much damage that kind of behavior can do to a fighting force.

Here Yamamoto Isoroku had personally gone into his final time in Rabaul: because Operation I-Go!
One of the biggest problem with the Japanese air arm, aside from pilot training, was the loss of aircraft ground crews. So many of them were lost with the sinking of the carriers, and the training of ground crews so inefficient, that the planes were poorly maintained. Insufficiently trained pilots and ground crews was a recipe for disaster.
There was another, lesser-known aspect of the insufficiently trained Japanese pilots post-1942 which could be described as hierarchical.
Saburo Sakai, the legendary IJN flying ace who never lost a wingman in combat, sustained serious injuries while attacking a formation of Grumman TBF Avengers over Guadalcanal in August 1942. After his discharge from the hospital in January 1943, he spent a year in training new fighter pilots. To his dismay, he found the new generation of student pilots, who typically outranked veteran instructors, to be arrogant and unskilled.

Midway was always the difference: the loss of 4 fleet carriers plus their trained,experienced aircrew!
@@MrSinclairn They only lost around a 100 aircrew all total most of them were fished out of the ocean or transferred over to other ships before they died. It was the Gaudalcanal actions that really wiped out Japanese pilots and aircrew well over 600 (some sources say 800) aircraft lost with most of the crew that is why a lot of historians call that the actual turning point of the Pacific war and not Midway.

BTW did this series explain the role of emperor in Japanese politics until lost the war? As a Japanese British perspective on the matter seems to hold some great error

That happened during the Guadalcanal Campaign naval engagements conducted at night at close quarters. Those were described as fist fights held inside a telephone booth.

Was a sad day for New Zealand to loose HMNZS Moa. Who just months before along with her sister ship HMNZS Kiwi had rammed and sunk the submarine I-1 .
If you look into the history and the results of the battle the valuable information gathered from the I-1 shortened the war.

This series is covering the pacific war at about the same pace it was happening. Meaning that the video about Musashis sinking will come in one and a half years, and the video about Yamatos sinking will come in two years.

The U.S. trained 70'000 pilots in WW2.
Japan trained 10% of that ..
Early in the war , experienced Japanese pilots out fought American pilots .
But , as American pilots were trained on better & better equipment , the balance turned in America's favor ...
The U.S. never stopped training pilots throughout the war , where as Japan waited far too late to train new pilots ...
Its also well worth mentioning , Japan never upgraded their fighters even when it was obvious the Zero was obsolete .
One upgrade of engine power helped some , but Japan sacrificed trained pilots for a lighter more agile plane...
One round into the wing tanks & they became an inferno .
Unlike the U.S. fighters which were heavy with armor around the pilot and self sealing fuel tanks ..
They could survive a horrible beating & return the pilot safely .

I-GO (ego) is an ironic pun for me. Yamamoto surveying frontlines, exaggerated number, boosted morale under false pretense, and unwilling to accept the flaws. As we have seen again and again, misinformation often lead to missed opportunity and bad engagement.

The Japanese were some people for faking reports. Multiple carriers sunk multiple times over being the funniest side effect

Japnese mistakes were as follows:
There pilot training system was very weak
Thier army was very very weak
The Betty bomber has very less Armor and as a result pilot loses rised drastically
Their fighters were very outdated
They have wasted enormous resources in battleships which were useless in ww2
A very important issue was lack of radar
You all may have not noticed that the primary reason for defeat in naval battle of guadacanal midway battle
Battle of Cape esperance and in many other battles their reason for defeat was lack of radar

What was the purpose of the inflated reports.
The Worst part of this for the Japanese - was that they committed the Naval Aircraft from their carriers and would subsequently lose it. Japan would never again have an effective Carrier Striking force because of this.
The Advantage the defensive power has - if they have an early warning network - is that they can be set and ready for the enemy when they attack. This can - as in Europe - result in significant losses for the Offensive Air Power and these losses will take place over enemy territory - so that whether they are killed or not - they will usually be lost to their side for the war. The Defensive power - flying over friendly territory - has a good chance of recovering the air crew of their lost aircraft so that their loss - is not as serious as that of the attacker.
The Advantage for the Offensive Power - is surprise - in that the Defensive Power does not know when the enemy will attack. That is ... they won't know .... unless they have broken the enemy's code and have a well integrated Early Warning Network. The Allies had both.
Thus - the Japanese did not catch large numbers of Allied Aircraft on the ground for them to destroy but they did suffer all the disadvantages of the offensive Air Power.
Finally though, whether in Europe or The Pacific, the Allies could not only replace their losses but reinforce their units with new ones - and the Japanese and Germans could not. As Allied Veterans survived to pass on their knowledge - those of the Axis powers did not. For both the Japanese and the Germans - what had been fine Air Powers with greater numbers of aircraft and well trained air crew - were reduced to poorly trained air crew and flying severely outnumbered machines.
