This animated short is my final CalArts film! Completing a project based on a mix of personal stories and getting to share it after so long comes with a whirlwind of emotions, but I'll keep things brief and just say thank you for watching!

This hit me so hard. I tried and failed to do theatre for years, and that moment of not seeing your name on the list with everyone else is just so devastating. This film nailed everything, from the teachers trying and failing to put you down gently, to the friends drifting away not because they’re _bad people,_ but just because you can’t keep up with them anymore. I just wish endings in real life could be so storybook.

as someone who did competitive dancing for years but lost my passion in it and wondered why my peers were so much better than me this one hit with the “enough for myself” bit 😭 the animation is gorgeous too i loveeee the art style

as someone who did ballet since i was 2, i know how this feels. at my old studio i kept getting held back compared to everyone else; it’s a lonely feeling having everyone else from your class progress every year and having your classmates be years younger than you. i know now the reason was because i had an undiagnosed disability that inhibited me from being able to handle things as well as the “normal” girls, i wish i had this kind of support when i was going through it.
also this story is funny because in my experience at my studios over the years people loved harlequin because it was a fun solo and hated waltz because it was so much standing
This really hit me 😅 In a good way, of course. Seeing her watch as her friends got to stay together and do things without her got to me :') As someone who plays an instrument, I feel this. I hate being the only one who hasn't been able to get to go to higher class orchestras. I hope to reach the same conclusion she does here, where she can finally be happy where she is. And how lovely, you're the same person who did the "princess and the mage" animation!
She's not happy, she's just putting up a face, and her mother tried to comfort her so she won't ruin the performance by having ruined make up or anything. And even if she believes now the lie that she's good enough for herself later she'll be looked down again and again and pressured into mindset that she's worse than her friends. Everyone one way or another will make her know that she's the worst out of them

Harlequin's outfit reminded me a little of Pomni!
I loved the animation, it talks about growing and maturing even if you think you're "below" but you're just learning at your own pace, you don't always need to be in the place you want to be happy :)
ikrr I was also thinking of Pomni, her voice even started to remind me a bit of her tbh-

This feels like a nice hug, I personally couldn’t graduate high school/art school or a normal one had to do online due to disabilities being diagnosed late so no accomodations.
And y’know I may not be good enough in normal standards and I may not have (essentially) prom or friends to relate to and it hurts. But atleast I got to graduate, I never even thought I would at all.
I almost had taken my life, but I made it. I always wanted to make it out but never could imagine it and I’m currently on my last year of highschool.
I was constantly thinking of ways it could’ve gone differently. But having a nice message that I already did enough for my own standards and I should appreciate that is like a hug.

I resonate with this so hard. Imposter syndrome sucks especially when outside forces tell you you’re not good enough on top of the self-negativity. Also, we have the same name!
I’m dealing with this right now except without the friends it’s really hard knowing that you’re worse than everyone else in the class I don’t know what else to say but if you’re also going through this just know you’re not alone

10/10 i hope she absolutely killed that dance! this has such a lovely message, as someone who quit ballet because the other girls were pretty mean, this is a really nice lil film, with a lovely message about doing something to the best of your ability even if you feel like your not good enough to do it. sometimes i wish i'd continued ballet despite them, but I found tap dance instead and that was definitely good enough for me. :)

I never feel enough for myself but I still got WAYYY further than I ever dreamed I would...I have no clue why my teachers have more faith in me and my capabilities than I do, but I'm not complaining. I give them all the credit, they're so wonderful ❤️
This is so nice!! A true masterpiece! The visuals are absolutely beautiful and the voice acting is amazing! Not to mention the story and the designs, stunning work!!!

this film means SO much to me. I’m 15, and it’s my last year dancing ballet due to school and it makes me look back on all the time i’ve spent dancing, all the nutcrackers with my friends, and it genuinely made me cry. I relate to this film a lot first hand, this year in the nutcracker i got casted as the same thing as last year and i was really hoping since it’s my last year i could get a bigger role, and some of my friends did but i didn’t. i still had fun with my friends of course, and the nutcracker experience was still as wonderful as all the other years, but it makes me a little sad that i didn’t get to land the role i wanted since i was 9. out of all the ballet films out there you have captured this part of the ballet experience :) this film is wonderful!!

I remember watching your short film in 2022 "The Princess and the Mage". It's really amazing to see the improvement in those two years, regarding both animation and storytelling!

The artstyle is so cute!!! I love ballerinas, they’re so pretty and graceful and they’re paired with such a soft artstyle in this film. This is so sweet
I have tried so many activities over the years, trying to see what I can really push myself at. I always found for many of the things I've tried, I never seem to be on the same level as my peers, and it always weighed down on me. It is truly so upsetting feeling like you aren't enough or not good enough, but I eventually learned you must accept yourself first, practice self love, and try your hardest always. This video made me tear up :) so lovely and it really hits you!

Wasn't expecting to cry but did anyway

This made me cry, 1) because it’s beautifully done on every level (obsessed with the colors) and 2) it’s so specifically relatable to me that i might have to check my house for cameras. ive done ballet my entire life, and nutcracker casting specifically was always harsh on me x-x. i think you really captured that feeling of alienation/isolation that comes from not fitting in and not meeting the expectations of yourself and, worse, the expectations of teachers! (which i have found to be far crueler.)
also, ballet student to animation student pipeline is real apparently?? ive never met another but hi!! i always considered making an short involving ballet, specifically a story of when I finally got my dream lead role, the only lead role ive ever received, only to break my foot and sprain my ankle the day before the performance. (spoiler: i still performed. in 3 roles. apologies to my doctor who I very much stressed out but huge shoutout to pain meds ayooo) but i feel it would be too personal a subject matter to have to think about for so long like you have to do with a film like this. so kudos for that! beautiful work!!

I’m a sax player and when we had our competition almost everybody in my class made it to the top band except me, being the only one at the band hall while everybody else was skipping school because of the top band performance was something I always feel embarrassed about…. So this hit hard 🫠
