I can't even express how much I appreciate this video. Idk about others, but I'm an adult who's a picky eater and this did not feel condescending what so ever. I also love that you explained how things helped, such as putting something on a stick, and what flavors are preferred, aka bland foods and seasoning.
Also super bonus points for the part about hiding veggies is okay, but we should also promote a healthy relationship with them. I loved this video!!!

I really appreciate this! As a picky eater so much stuff out there is about how stupid it is to be picky and not food I can eat at all. You guys hit it out of the park with makeing the vegies small so they dont cause texture changes in the Turkey balls and haveing each salid separate and not mixed at all.
I got alot of great idears from this I'm exsited to try thank you so much!

I really appreciate all the details explaining what preparing foods in these ways may be more appealing, it really helps to figure out what may work and what may not. Also the fact that this wasn’t aimed just at kids or made to be patronizing is so important. It’s been hard for me to remember that anyone can be a picky eater for various reasons and that doesn’t make them immature, it just means a few extra steps to figure out how to make eating and trying new things less overwhelming. This video was super helpful for me to learn how to approach this in a more understanding manner

So I realized upon watching your video that my children are picky eaters. 🤣🤷🏻‍♀️ we do plain things in bentos a LOT.
I like the grilled sandwich idea and the grilled egg idea. I will try those soon!
Question: turkey meatballs served cold? I struggle with serving hot things cold... like hot veggies (corn, green beans, broccoli), meatballs or meatloaf, etc... one kid eats cold pizza joyfully, the others won’t. Any ideas on how to convince them to just try it?

    • @MindOverMunch
      @MindOverMunch  Před 4 lety

Thanks! You can serve them hot or cold! Whatever your kids like :) I think it's important for kids or adults to be exposed to things again and again so we can get more comfortable with their presence, and eventually one day we feel inclined to try :)

For the muffins, you could omit the cinnamon and pumpkin pie spice altogether. Or, substitute with nutmeg, allspice, cloves, or a combination of these! 🙂

Great bento boxes. They look delicious. :)
However, somehow I'm always a bit triggered by the terminology "picky eater"...
When you call someone a picky eater, aren't you kind of encouraging them to be picky and to act that way? Altering the foods, trying to accommodate their preferences...
Of course this doesn't mean that you shouldn't make an effort for them every now and then or stop offering healthy options...
I just think labeling people in general is not a good idea. People go through phases and developmental stages. Everyone has their preferences. Well...I don't know. Maybe it's just me who thinks that way. :3 (No offense, though. It's still a really awesome video!)

I hear you! I didn't make up the term, but it's commonly searched for as many identify themselves or their kids as "picky"

@@MindOverMunch Yeah, I know you didn't make up the term. :)
In my native tongue, the word for a "picky eater" has a really negative connotation, I guess. It's rather fussy than picky - if fussy is worse than picky in this case. And it's something you really don't want to be. (Picky can be a tad more positive...like you choose wisely...just picking the best stuff. Like...just eating the pretty carrots and not the ugly looking ones.)
Sorry, just ignore me. Languages are confusing. 😔

I think there is a bit of a misconception that picky eaters are (always) picky by choice. I'm 26 and still very fussy with my food and really embarrassed about that. I hate to be the one saying "oh, I don't like that" and I really try to change that. But if I say I don't like something I have actually tried these foods numerous times and still struggle to eat them without feeling like I have to puke. So I try to sneak hate-foods into my meals even when I prepare them myself to try and get better at eating stuff I don't like. For me, these bentos and the tips are actually super helpful! And I saw them specifically because of the label in the title! Just some "food" for your thoughts! :)

Great ideas but definitely not for picky eaters. My son would not touch any of those foods unfortunately.

The thing about picky eaters is they have different picky preferences :) Age makes a difference too.

LMAO This was clearly written by someone who is not a picky eater.
Maybe just be understanding that some people just genuinely do not like certain foods? Why do people who aren’t ‘picky eaters’ just assume that we just never tried something instead of considering that we DID try it and that’s how we know we don’t like it? You’re not going to fool me by ‘sneaking’ squash into a meatball. You might fool me into ‘trying’ it but the result will be me spitting it out immediately and never trusting you again.
Better idea: ask the picky eater what it is that they don’t like about a certain food. This might give you better direction on how to change their mind on it by incorporating it in ways that is actually specifically catered to avoiding the thing they dislike about it. It could be the smell, flavor, texture, saliva reaction...but you seem to be not considering any of that and instead just assuming that they’re being close-minded.
Maybe sometimes you just have to accept that they genuinely hate it and are never going to eat it. And that’s okay.

I don't like the language of calling someone with food aversion(s) picky. It's messed up. I did, however, enjoy most of this video.

I didn't make it up, but I hear you! A lot of people struggle with "picky eaters" in their household. It's not meant to be demeaning but does need to be addressed.
