London Art Fair returns from 21-24 April 2022 (press preview on 20th April), bringing exceptional modern and contemporary art to the capital. The Fair brings together some of the best galleries from around the world, presenting work from both internationally renowned artists and emerging artists breaking new ground.
The Fair also features curated sections dedicated to photography, video art, contemporary music art and its Museum Partner, New Hall Art Collection.
PHOTO50 - NO PLACE IS AN ISLAND
This year’s Photo50 exhibition, No Place is an Island, presents a selection of works by 14 contemporary British and UK-based photographers, each of whom bring a unique perspective to the exhibition’s subject matter and work in a variety of photographic formats and materials.
The exhibition, which is curated by Rodrigo Orrantia, aims to interrogate what it means to be an island and to imagine its multiple possibilities towards the future. The selection focuses on practices that experiment with the boundaries of photography, sculpture and performance, often referencing British photographic history as a context for their approach to the medium.

PLATFORM - MUSIC AND CONTEMPORARY ART
For this year’s annual themed section, guest curator Candida Stevens has chosen Music and its part in Contemporary Art, working with 10 galleries whose artists have created new work exploring the intersection of visual art and music, and the ways in which contemporary art can incorporate aspects of movement and rhythm. The display will range from abstract work referencing the riff of jazz music with off-key colour and off-kilter form to figurative artists representing the process of composition across both art forms.
Dimitrios Skyllas will build further on the theme of art and music by performing a piano recital from Abyss, created in response to artist Matt Smith’s ceramic piece ‘Notes of a love song’ which will be exhibited at Platform.

MUSEUM PARTNERSHIP - LARGEST COLLECTION OF ART BY WOMEN IN EUROPE
The New Hall Art Collection is a permanent collection of modern and contemporary art by women at Murray Edwards College, University of Cambridge. The exhibition Myth-Making and Self-Fashioning: Women Artists from the New Hall Art Collection presents over 20 artists including Maggi Hambling, Paula Rego, Gayle Chong Kwan, Rose Wylie and Miriam Schapiro from the largest collection of art by women in Europe. The works on display, which include paintings, photographs, textiles and ceramics, will focus on two themes - myth-making and self-fashioning.

    LOCKDOWN ART
The pandemic had a sudden and substantial impact on the arts and culture sector, with theatres, music venues, and galleries around the world forced to close their doors for months. During this period, artists found new and creative ways to document this time, which has resulted in meaningful new works and initiatives, some of which will be presented during London Art Fair.
    Examples of these works include:
    ● Represented by Cavaliero Finn, London based artist David Edmond has created a series of street paintings of deserted music venues which had been closed for a year reflecting on the absence of live gigs and performances during lockdown.
    ● Austrian artist Jari Genser’s work, presented by Kunst ab Hinterhof, presents his view of his art studio in 2020 whilst he regularly listens to updates on a Coronavirus focused podcast.
    ● Charlie Smith Gallery will dedicate a wall to their lockdown initiative PROJECT PAPYROPHILIA which has been hugely successful, selling nearly 500 pieces and has been hailed by artists as an initiative that helped them to survive during the pandemic.

The most interesting work in this whole fair is the venue architecture, not the art within it.

Most modern art substitutes weird for quality, narrow isms for scope, and trendy for depth. It also refuses to change or even talk about progressive ideas in art like those that follow
Too many treat art as a marketing scheme. Modern art has become a trendy clique and the art now is mostly over promoted footnotes to greater art that was done 100 years ago. But art is too important to be reduced to a trendy clique.
Post-ism, is art for a new century, not a continuation of last century trends.
1 Mass Market Paintings like Prints. When any art form is mass marketed it enters a golden age. This has happened with books, records, and film. Let's add paintings. Most art is in storage in museum basements. Mass Marketing allows art to tour in copies and allows artists to make royalties on copies.
Why do you think the world gets so excited about a new great book, record, or film; but no one cares about a new great painting? All are mass produced except the painting.
    2. End a Century of Isms. Dump the genres and formulas and let all kinds of art be a part of the art world.
    3. Shift Emphasis From Trendy to Quality. Shift emphasis from the latest trendy art, to quality art in any style. Just because art is weird does not mean it is great art.
    4. Free the Art From Museums and Galleries. Get the art out of the ivory elitist museum and gallery towers and back into the world. Have city art centers open to all artists. Make art that is relevant and communicates with people. Start with the first generation of artists online.
    5. Postism is Part of a Bigger Revolution. Postism is part of the bigger art and media revolution out of Dallas, that includes art, music, lit, film, media, and a lot more.
    6. Postism online: Online artists are the new wave of art. We had all the isms of last century. Now we have a free for all, of all kinds of artists, that are not sanctioned by any museum or gallery, displaying their work. Out of that comes the next wave and revolution of artists.
Last century the goal was to fit the ism. This century the goal is to do great art - no ism, no boundaries. Fractionalized art then, synchronized art now. Even calling something modern art is a type of ism that separates that art from the art of the past.
The 20th century was a century of experimentation in art. Now in the 21st we can choose from all those styles and / or start one of our own.
Then too if someone devises a way to charge and collect a penny per view on a webpage, that would allow any great artist to get money for their art and have a career without any middlemen.
Duchamp broke ground 100 years ago - but now his clones are just shoveling dirt. Weird art is easy, you put a strip of raw bacon across an expensive violin, but it's not good art.
Join the art revolution and pull the art world out of last century.
    Musea since 1992.

How in the hell are artists still trying to get into galleries and collectors using their service in this day in age? It's in major need of a shake up, no?

I’m sure it’s a great video, but the constant spinning and panning made me motion sick. I had to turn away after a minute. Try pausing between paintings to reduce the “travel and motion” and maybe chill on the narration. Nothing personal, but people like to absorb the art without the added distractions that voice over narration provides. Just a constructive tip. I watch a lot of these types of videos, so I see a ton of what other channels are doing to make the video more “passive.” I will put on a 1 hour video and just sort of move about the house, making art, or reading a book with the paintings and ambiance of soft murmurs in the background. Admiring the art as it just flashes on screen. It’s all very calming.
    Great coverage otherwise.

Sorry cant deal with the narration, had to mute this just to watch. Its like going to a movie with someone who talks all the way through it. People want to look and contemplate the art without the narrative.

Hey dude thanks for getting in touch. I’m glad you could turn off the sound and make the most of it. Some people do like my narration and I guess it’s part of the way I film these videos. I was thinking of putting up a silent one but then I remembered I did do a silent David Hockey one during Covid where I couldn’t really narrate because of the mask. I got asked to take that one down. Legally the video needs to be a ‘review’ otherwise there’s copywright issues with using the images.

I agree. Probably not his fault though. Some lighting does that. Frame rates, verses frequency of the light pulse. Or something
