We had a couple of holidays around this time when I was a kid. I used to like Torquay. I remember when the Riviera centre opened, it was the first time I’d been on a water slide in the UK! It’s not the same since they got rid of all the arcades! Love the use of “Ride Like The Wind” at the start. Awesome.
lots of nice memories, i live 10 mins away from torquay. what a shame its so run down now, just full of empty shops, drugs, and unfortunatly alot of homeless
This is how I remember my home. Cockington, Babbacombe and St Marychurch still retain their beauty. But the Towncentre and surrounding areas are slipping. Still a busy place, but not as it was. The transport needs to be improved, trains are too slow and old.
@@phoenix6861 Don't know if you know Torquay but it was half way up market Street,over a huge discount furniture shop. It allegedly had the first on the floor keypad that was activated by standing on the keys,although I'm not sure if that's true. It closed i would imagine about 20 years ago.
@@phoenix6861 Not really sure where you mean. As you go up market Street there is a road to the left that is just before the park and bowling green,it was on the left just before the junction. I just googled fun factory torquay and there are a few old Facebook posts about it.
I love watching these videos of places like Torquay back in the day. This is only 32 years ago! I have never been to Torquay but my late father stayed at the Imperial Hotel a number of times as the company he worked for had their sales conferences there towards the end of the 70's and also towards the end of the 80's He always told me that the the hotel was 'top draw' and at that time was a 5* hotel if i remember correctly. Also Torquay was a great place for a week's holiday or just a short break. I suppose 30 + years on things have changed and reading some of these comments perhaps not for the better. As i child in the 60's i was taken to Rhyl several times and when i went back in the 90's it was so depressing. All i saw were young girls with pushchairs with young babies and the front needed quite a bit of money spent to 'clean the place up'
I agree, it is a shame how Torquay has slipped down. It wealth was created by being the best winter climate available to the Victorians and then later by Tourism. All now look to overseas destinations. It could grow as a dormitory town or high tech business location, but it desperately needs a decent connecting road to the rest of the country. The only seaside resorts to survive the change are Brighton/Bournemouth. Both with good dual carrage ways. That tells you the solution!
Was at Babbacombe and Odicombe a couple of years ago and the beach was almost deserted in high summer. One time they would be packed and there would be a 20 minute queue or more to use the funicular railway.
Yes Torquay is a great place to live and is improving by the week with all new investment coming in. The new bypass will make travelling to Torbay a lot easier. The video is an old one and could do with updating. Its great to see holiday makers enjoying themselves. The pavilion is to be knocked down this coming year to make way for a new hotel/restaurant, and the new apartments on the sea front will be complete this next year. A lot of new investment will change the face of the bay. if you know where to look and visit there are some outstanding places. No we cant guarantee the sun, but some great places to eat and visit. We are so lucky to live hear, and as I have said, once the new bypass is complete even better.
Venn. Productions - Rock Walk, Palm Court (always buzzing when I was a kid) and many of the old villas have gone, but the bones of a classy resort are still there even now. Just needs sprucing up and bringing back... somehow.
More and more people go abroad nowadays, even running a car is cheaper now than it was 30 years ago, standard of living has gone up, people have more money. Can't live in the past, it's like me saying 60 years ago was better as everyone smoked and you'd be lucky if you lived till 60 and health and safety meant deaths on building sites were common back then, we earned less money but at least we hung people for murder and didn't have to use seat belts in cars.. Yea great times in the old days, no computer or mobiles, no double glazing or central heating, work was 55 hours a week with 2 weeks paid holiday a year. And half the homes still had outside toilets.. Great fun, less beggars because nobody had any money to give them lol
Perhaps, this is a reflection on why the reason Torquay has slid down as people now use such poor language to express an opinion. Those with an education/money/standards go elsewhere!

Truth Seeker - there were still glimpses of that glamour when our family used to holiday there in the mid-late 80s. It really did feel as though you were abroad. Then the big recessions of the early 90s hit and, whilst we carried on going, the place was noticeably quieter. (A run of bad summers between 1991-1994 didn't help). And a lot of businesses just didn't make it. They've been trying to revive it ever since, but in my view going about it all wrong. Cutting down magnificent old trees, flattening old buildings. Destroying the very things that made it special. One the more successful resorts in this country is Llandudno and that's because it's restored its Victorian architecture and turned the idea of a traditional seaside holiday into a selling point. Whereas Torquay almost seems ashamed of its glory days. Yes, the whole country has undergone a lot of social decline since the 70s and 80s, but in Torquay a lot of it wasn't necessary. It needs a better council (not a Tory one, for a start) and an aggressive policy of saving and preserving the surviving beautiful mid-C19th buildings, coupled with new and innovative ways to somehow draw the tourists back.
Torquay is a depressing dump now. Lots of fights and people vomiting in the streets of the town at night. The hotels are mostly clapped out flea pits. About as much style as Benidorm but with rain.
Iv'e just returned from Torquay from a short break and i think its in a time warp..Its in the 80's but the tramps are still in the doorways!!.. why do the council let this happen?
