Hi It’s an interesting question. I was afraid of the same that I will lose my surgical skills by not scrubbing in or by being in an assistant role for long time. I took a leap of faith. Fortunately, the fears did not turn into reality. In retrospect, after my research fellowship of 1.5 years, it took me 3-5 cases to get back in the game and comfort zone of performing surgeries. The skill set of performing surgery is like swimming or driving, you never really forget them. On the good side, during my research fellowship, I was able to focus and learn upon the clinical pathways and protocols required to approach and solve complex clinical cases based on best scientific evidence. The fellowship years also boost critical thinking which will help you in everyday practice. It also opens doors for network and collaboration with esteemed peers; the professional relationships will nurture your career for life long. Furthermore, you get a chance at learning soft skills of clinical practice that we never really learn due to busy clinical chores such as effective patient communication, compassion, and handling tough situations such as untoward complication in a patient. Research fellowship of a year or two can be a game changer to learn skills that will keep giving through your 50 years long career later. It is all about how you approach it. Good luck!
