- In this game of Civ 6, we’ll be playing as Tokugawa’s Japan, and the objective today was to explore play a leader widely reputed to be the best in Civilization Six!
Tokugawa uses internal trade routes to build on Japan’s natural district adjacency powers to create a civilization well versed in science, culture and gold. Can we use internal trade route mechanics to create a scientific, militaristic powerhouse? I’ll tell you this for free - this game changed how I view Tokugawa and Japan!!

“How dangerous could four slashy bois and one shooty boi really be?” -Nubia, moments before disaster
To callback yesterday comment, four samurai and a cross bowman walk into...
5:04 About Dams... I am pretty sure that if you built the lone river Dam as your first one (at the location which isn't available anymore), the game would not behave the same and would have allowed to build both Dams as planned. Civilization VI works in mysterious ways sometimes...
Ah, probably! I forgot anyway XD What a fool
I think had he placed the other one first, even if it would have invalidated the placement for the other one, he could have moved it over a tile to the other side of the river and built the IZ in between them for the same bonus.
Tokugawa is my favorite leader. I build a giga-capital and print settlers from it. You just build commercial hubs or harbors in all your other cities and it doesn't even matter what else you build, your science and culture will be handled by trading with the capital! Once you get up to 7 food, 5 production, 8 science/culture, and 16 gold trade routes it is so satisfying.
It's such a satisfying playstyle I agree!
@@UrsaRyan If you need more ideas for playthroughs, I am doing a Tokugawa game with the Knights of Solomon (that modded secret society). You can get your traders from building shrines, and if you take the river goddess pantheon the amenities really help you build wide!
15:55 The Tiananmen Square tank guy was reincarnated as a builder in Civ 6
i never thought samurai rush was so strong wowie
So much fun!
Woo, perfect youtube refresh, huzzah!
Not for me I ring the bell!
Huzzah!
Well, this game is positively scintillating at this point! Who knew that starting next to a wonder was better than starting in floodplains?! And Ursa got to play with delicious, delicious samurai! Just whipping them around now on railroads! Whee! Huzzah!
Huzzah!
@5:19; in prior episode, I suspected that only one of the dams would not be supported...here's why. The Shinano River occupies one edge of your placed dam tile (where Shinano River branches off of Ishikari River). The neighbouring Ishikari River occupies the 2nd edge. The dam was permitted because the placement conditions were met, but in doing so, you eliminated the possibility of the 2nd dam because rivers can only be dammed once.
It also works like Wonders. If you and your neighbor try to Dam the same river, once one of the Dam is completed, the second one will be erased.
But it is poorly coded: it doesn't erase the ongoing Dam on the river, but every Dams in the city who was building the Dam, for some reason. I had a city on a river-with-floodplains rich area. I built Dam 1 on river A, then was building Dam 2 on river B. My neighbor beat me at building a Dam on river B: both the finished Dam A and the ongoing Dam B were erased at the completion of the foreign Dam.
this is great fun to watch and play myself. I couldnot resist feed the world. Thanks for the fun series and the railroads
Gald you enjoyed = )
I really like the thumbnail. Has some cool alternate History vibes, with the Pyramids and the Samurai.
Cheers! Was a lot of fun!
JUST IN TIME LOOKING FOWARD TO THIS HUZZAH
Huzzah!
I actually have this same issue with dams in my latest game. The river I could not place the dam on has had 1000 year floods approximately every 5-10 turns; completely devastating multiple districts each time. Liang is of little use when you have built a fidget spinner of 3 cities setup around a flooding river.....
I just finished a fanTAXIS game with Byzantium and this video is what I needed… Huzzah!
Huzzah!
Samurai huzzahs!
Huzzah!
Wow these Samurai are dominating. And hooray for another iteration of our favorite Recon unit!
Huzzah!
huzzah!!!
Huzzah!
This game has burgeoned into something beautiful! This is kind of what you hope yongle playthroughs go like, but it's never the case 😂 really looking forward to an empire with huge adjacencies! Huzzah!

"GET OUT OF MY LAKE!" - Lord Anna Banana, 2024
Banana lake
11:48 I kind of like when this happens for the extra adjacency bonus, but it does suck that it was a campus and not something like an entertainment complex. The best is finding a wonder built on a ley line, definitely feels thematic.
@5:40 If you're trying to put a second dam down in the same city, the game doesn't let you until the first one is finished. You can only build one dam at a time per city FYI. Otherwise the game would be confused as to "which" dam you want to put production in
Quite the contrast to previous series!
Yes, Samurai were always powerful units especially when Hojo's divine wind ability can be used, they just suffered from other problems:
1) Knights being overpowered and thus invalidating other medieval units.
2) A terrible place on the tech tree (Military Tactics) where you rarely rush tech to.
3) Being a standalone unit an no option to upgrade earlier units
Thankfully ALL of those 3 major problems have been since changed.
A scout with three promotions! And it didn't immediately run into a barbar-
The three turns of silence wondering what happened was killing me. And then sweet relief! Made it to upgrade!
Huzzah!
Holy adjacencies Batman
Now have a trade route Robin!
Huzzah!!!!
Huzzah!
21:37 siege towers never get any credit in the wars. Lol.
My problem with samurai is that the AI mostly has already line infantry when I'm planning an attack.
Nice thumbnail man
Cheers! Sleepy is a master at work
always wanted to go to Japan!
Tokugawa is easily my favourite civ. I have a lot of fun with yongle too but it doesn't compare. Even Eleanor doesn't.
Eleanor is life though
Sup, bears!
Huzzah!
Very wise to wait to attack Nubia until after their super archer unique unit became obsolete.
huzzah

The first electric factory appears in Japan in 300AD.
It quickly made the first gameboy by 305AD
Episode 3 of trying to get Ursa Ryan to check out Civ BE with the Codex Mod
Electronics factory while you still have samurai. Man, you kept fighting with swords even longer then actual Japan.
If it works, never change it!
Who is more doomed. Imhotep building mausoleum or Hercules building space port?
how to make it visible under the district signs how many + they will have?
EMOTEP DELIVER ME A MAUSOLEUM 😗🗣️🗣️🗣️🗣️
Huzaaah Anna Banana lives!

i wonder if you could have built that second dam if you had completely built the first one...
You have to finish one first
Yeah that's what I was thinking. He slightly stuffed up the spinner because of it
🖖
how the fuck does the ai not fuck you up in the early game in any of your videos, It always declares like 2-5 wars on me in the first 2-3 eras. I can never get away with a start like this (just scouts not any slingers and stuff)
this is with me making all the friends I can
Keeping a large military stops the ai from attacking but often as well the map choice makes a difference. The lakes map like this is BIG, ai has space
@@UrsaRyan that makes sense. but to me, going above emperor turns the aggression way up, even on large/huge maps. maybe that's just randomly unlucky tho :D
@@UrsaRyanjust a small thing I noticed, you keep "killing" civs last city, its much "better" to leave a smaller city to flip after you peace them out. That way you wont get the greviances for deleting someone from the game
Did he ever point out if niter spawned amongst the industrial complex?
He is getting some form somehwere
@@StayCoolKeto I noticed, but I really wanted to see if any of it is under the district's he so diligently placed along that river before unlocking it.
Yes the cheeky stuff spawned right in the middle - I forgot to mention! Lucky I'd placed first
Re 5:30 - the dam placement ambiguity is sooooo annoying!! What’s the point of having the little gold diamond indicating the “primary” river on a tile with two river edges if districts don’t behave accordingly?! I’ve had many glorious IZ plans ruined by this same bug.
One thing I have tested, though - if a dam is pillaged, you can build another one on the same river, then repair the first one, and both function normally from then on. Have used this exploit to make great IZs in conquered cities.
"Walls wont stop me!"
My god that can be taken horribly out of context.
Daily comment.

You said you would do scenarios!
I fancied doing achievements
@@UrsaRyan how many are left for you to do?
Idk was too busy doing scenarios
Bro i love your content im almost watching every Video from you but you make so much war in every Game thats super boring. Pls make some Games without war
There are plenty of games without war don't worry = ) If you give me Samurai though I'm going to use them!
